QOTD: What are some unique items you have seen being handed out to runners during a race?

ATTQOTD: Donuts, beer, and smokes. I actually did see someone stop for a smoke while running a marathon once before.

@LSUlakes my official time came in at 30:05. Probably started or ended my watch few seconds too soon. But I'm still super happy with that outcome seeing as I was thinking my fitness wasn't anywhere near that.

Side question for the board: Has anyone ever done one of those really long Avon or Susan Komen, etc. breast cancer charity walks (or similar events)? There was a 39 mile 3 day one going on in Chicago while we were downtown yesterday and I was thinking it may be something cool to do for my mom next year (especially if I can rope in some friends)...but I just have no knowledge of these events.

Other than beer handed out by spectators, the oddest thing I think that I've seen is chocolate at Disney during the marathon. I can't imagine trying to swallow a piece of chocolate around mile 17 or 18 of a marathon.

Well my only races being Disney races I can't say I've seen anything really crazy. Mostly candy, licorice, and other just quick snack type stuff.

I also wanted to let you guys know that my grandma past away yesterday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was an amazing woman. She was also on the trip with me in 2015 for my first WDW race. She is in a better place now and doesn't have to suffer anymore.

That reminds me of the first mile of the hot chocolate race in Chicago. They were handing out dixie cups filled with chocolate chips. People were grabbing them and then going "what the?" and tossing them. There were a few hundred feet of squished chocolate drops to dodge around. I put in the suggestion survey after the race to maybe save that stop for later on the course and make it way more clear what they were. Smelled really good though...hot chocolate on asphalt.

I love that chocolate stop. I grabbed like 4 or 5 of them.

I'm so sorry. :(

I'm sorry for your loss, but glad you have that memory to look back on. :(

So sorry to hear this, Ryan. I'm glad she was there for your first race, though, I know it will have made her very proud. I know it's no real comfort now, but I did want to let you know that the last Hogwarts Running Club virtual race was the Half Blood Prince Half Marathon. The charity for the run was Project Purple, which is dedicated to the fight against pancreatic cancer, so the fight against that form of the disease is ongoing and people are paying attention to it.

I did a 25K trail race last year and was coming up to the 20K point in 4th place overall when I saw a "Hillbilly Beer Stop". I knew I wasn't catching 3rd for a podium so I figured what the heck. They had three kinds of beer...Light Beer (Keystone I think?), Dark Beer (Heineken) and Root Beer. Had to take a shot of each, of course! :drinking1 I did get passed by one guy while drinking with the banjo-playing overall-wearing locals, but what's the difference between 4th and 5th, right?? I had a blast and burped my way the last 5K to the finish line.

As @croach said, you don't necessarily need to have any symptoms to use salt tabs. They are useful in replenishing your electrolytes in ways and quantities you might not always be able to get or want from sports drinks. I find them to be more effective than Powerade, though I still drink that too in order to keep from dehydrating. If you really are looking for symptoms, check yourself during and after a run. If you've got dried salt on your face or coloring your black shorts white, you ought to give some thought to taking in salt tabs during your run.
Really need to try salt tabs..I'm one of those crusty salt faced runners and I take a beating in the heat running off the bike. I'm bad about getting fluids in and have been meaning to try tabs on the bike.

Sorry to hear that Ryan, but knowing how awful pancreatic cancer can be she is truly in a better place. Hopefully this brings peace to you and your family as well.

I struggled to drink enough fluids until I found something to drink during races/training runs that I really liked and looked forward to drinking. For me that was/is Rain Berry Gatorade. Now that I have found this I stay much better hydrated during long/hot runs, and I no longer have to take salt tabs.

Everyone is different. We have to continue searching until we find what works for each one of us as individuals. But remember that solving your electrolyte problem will not solve you hydration problem. You have to drink.

Thanks for the info. I've never experienced the salt crusties on skin or clothing during running, so maybe I'm doing OK with it. I tend to drink water on my training runs, although I have a bad habit of not taking any with me if I'm running <10 miles. After training, I use Propel to replenish. During races, I usually alternate between water and Powerade/Gatorade at the aid stations.
