The Running Thread - 2016

Finished my marathon in 3:28:35. It was 2 minutes off my time I trained for, but given the circumstances around the run (Spoiler - CRAZY WIND!) I am beyond ecstatic. It's a marathon PR by 10 minutes for me and beat my time on the same course from last year by 90 MINUTES! If you'd like the long (yea, like really long) version check out my training journal recap:

Congrats to all of the other runners this weekend!

Congratulations DopeyBadger. New PR and a 90 minute improvement in one year. Seriously, your training and dedication are an inspiration. Hope you get to celebrate.

Way to go @DopeyBadger. I'm not a fan of crazy wind runs but you made the best of a difficult situation and got that PR and sweet revenge on that course.
Awesome!

A 10-minute PR is very impressive at that fast a time. Well done!

Half Marathon done this morning, though the wheels fell off for me somewhere around km 18 so only manages 2:38. Beautiful course through the Swiss countryside. Sitting here at the moment watching all the marathoners finish outside my hotel room window. The elites are always a joy to watch - but right now (about to hit hour five of the marathon) cheering the stragglers. Lot of people running past who are clearly hurting. But they are almost there.

Great job on the race. You know, every time I hear, or read, about someone's story from a marathon I am both impressed and it also makes me wonder why I signed up for another one of these. They are so hard. For example, you got a stitch/cramp and it never happened during training so why now? There are just so many things that can happen during any of these races, of any distance actually.

Thanks! I guess that's exactly why I sign up for them, because they are hard. We like it because of the feeling we get when we complete it. Part of the fun is trying to overcome all of those little things that can pop up during the course of any distance race. I was definitely not prepared for a side stitch but was super happy when I got it to dissipate after 5 or so miles. The wind on the other hand I had to deal with a ton during this last training cycle. I even personally renamed Thursday to Windsday because every time I had a Tempo run it seemed like we had peak winds for the week.

Thanks!

Thank you. I'm ready to take the training to the next level for my "A" goal marathon this year in the Fall. I'm excited to see what I can do when I push myself to the max. Celebrated with some pizza and a dove ice cream bar. I'll take two weeks off from running now to enjoy more family time and let my body recover. Then it's back to the training grind.

Awesome!

Thanks! I wasn't going to let anything stop me this year on this course. Whether it be a relentless side stitch or the crazy wind, I was going to find a way to overcome and still be proud of my time no matter what.

Appreciate it! I'll treasure this victory and move to the next conquest.

Good morning folks and congrats to all the races this weekend!

QOTD: If you normally run in the afternoon, but would like to start running in the morning, what are some tips you can share to help with the early wake up and run?

ATTQOTD: I have failed many times to make this transition and currently working on making it happen.

This is a tough one. I tend to run whenever I can work it into my schedule and early morning tends to be 3rd on the list behind lunchtime/afternoon and evening. It usually only seems to happen when something prevents me from running one of the other times like work schedule or the heat in the dead of summer. That being said, the one tip I've found to help get things going in the mornings is to lay out clothing and running gear the night before, preferably in another location (spare bedroom or bathroom) so that it can be accessed without disturbing the significant other.

I am not a lot of help here either - I've learned that I can plan to run in the afternoon or evening, but it usually doesn't happen because of laziness, things that pop up during the day, and all the other stuff that can happen. So I've basically just forced myself to start getting up early. It helps that if I get up and go run in the morning, the heat and humidity aren't as bad.

We haven't gotten into the real summer here in my part of Georgia yet, but it's going to be miserable - and I haven't run in the summer in about 5 years, since the last time I was serious about running. So it's mostly motivation to actually complete my schedule that gets me up. And I sometimes take a nap in the afternoon, which helps with the sleep deprivation issues :P

QOTD: If you normally run in the afternoon, but would like to start running in the morning, what are some tips you can share to help with the early wake up and run?

ATTQOTD: I'm not sure I have any great tips. I do know that when I have run in the afternoons and evenings, I never seem to have a good run. Plus with getting home from work, eating dinner, doing stuff with the kids there just isn't time to fit it in. So, I guess it's a bit of an issue of if I don't run in the morning, it won't happen otherwise. We get up at 4:30 in order to be out on the road by 5. That gives us time to get in 4-5 miles and still get back home and cleaned up and in to work. My biggest motivator to get myself out of bed, is that when I do workout in the mornings, I feel so much better throughout the rest of the day versus being mad at myself for sleeping in. So, when my alarm goes off and I just want to roll over and go to sleep I tell myself that I know I'll regret it if I don't. And truthfully, once I'm up and in the bathroom, it's pretty easy from there on out. So, it's just that minute or two of forcing myself to get my feet on the floor that I have to force myself through.

ATTQOTD: I have no answer, but am looking for same advise that you are. I think early mornings would work best for me only on the shortest of my weekly runs time-wise. I've thought about incorporating them in (once I'm done resting this pesky foot injury) on Tuesday mornings since that is my easiest of run days. When I think about how much time I spend "dawdling" around before I actually start getting ready...I know I have time for a run...I'm just partially a zombie and I'd have to make myself get ready to run quickly...no time for dawdling around.

SIDENOTE: The weather is sooooo nice right now FINALLY. I'm pretty bummed I'm not running though, itching to get back but resting my foot. Sad sigh. I did request lunch al fresco in the backyard yesterday and it was so nice we ate dinner outside too. No fancy restaraunt for Mother's day, just time in the sunshine :)

ATTQOTD: I have failed many times to make this transition and currently working on making it happen.

I am a sometimes early runner during the school year, but in the summer it's my only choice on weekdays. I am starting now to add some early runs so it will be an easier adjustment in June when the kids are out. For me there are a few things I do to make it easier.

- I get my clothes out in the evening.
- I plug in my phone and put my headphones with it. My Garmin too if it needs to be charged.
- I set my iPad alarm to go off with a favorite running song.
- When I'm in a stretch where it's harder to get up early, I'll sometimes put my iPad in my bathroom, if I have to get up to turn it off I am up and I'll stay up. It's easy to roll over and go back to sleep if it's on a nightstand.

As for motivation, when I lost 40+ pounds 6 years ago I was up early every morning for the 515 gym opening, so I just remind myself I've had the most success when I've exercised early. Also, once I adjust to the early schedule it actually makes my whole day smoother. No carving out time elsewhere in the day for a run or trip to the gym. Now that running is my primary exercise, it's really only this time of year I'm up early because it is light early enough. I don't do dark runs because I run alone in an area with very poor lighting.
