About W.I.S.H

Within the DISboards, there is a group of DISers that like to talk about getting healthy or staying healthy, and all of the things that entails. They are called W.I.S.Hers. On this thread, TXBelle (Heather) shares the history of W.I.S.H. and how it all began.

You are always welcome to post on the W.I.S.H boards and ask questions, or to offer advice for someone else. Once you've posted, you are automatically a member of W.I.S.H!

Within W.I.S.H there are smaller teams of about 20 people each. You do not have to be on a team to be a member of W.I.S.H and you do not have to be a member of W.I.S.H to be on a team. They are just a way for smaller groups of people to get to know each other and to offer more personalized advice and suggestions.

How can I join a team?

Simply find the team you are intersted in (this post is a good starting place) and start posting. Introduce yourself and join right in.

About the Rebels

On February 7, 2009, windwalker asked for a volunteer to lead a new team he named Rebel Alliance. It didn't appear that there were many people eager to take on that job! Soon however, Suzann and scoolover (Scott) stepped up and offered to share the duties of heading up the new team. Back then, every team member had to announce their monthly miles and minutes and the team captain kept a team total.

Before long the team had 11 members and by June we were up to 14. One of the latest monthly threads was started in July of 2009 by Suzann until K80K (Katie) started one in September of that same year. October was skipped and a November thread was started by wdwprincess (Jane). By this time, most members of the team had drifted away. "Real life" got in the way, training slowed down, there was an injury... For whatever reason, it appeared that the Rebels had disbanded.

In January of 2010, deekaypee (Debra) started asking for opinions for the new year and scoolover (Scott) offered to re-start the Rebels. He started a thread asking if any past team members were interested in coming back, and a few did. Then jmasgat (Maura) started filling the team in with brand new people who were either new to W.I.S.H or were ready to join a team. The numbers rose quickly and before long the team had 20 members.

For personal reasons, scoolover (Scott) asked disney_mommy (Andrea) to take over as team captain in February 2010. She accepted and the team is in its current state.

James - Sorry you are still battling your breathing issues. Sounds like cutting back while getting healthy may be the best bet for you. There's no reason you can't work on maintaining a steady base while you do it. Take care of you. :grouphug:

Michelle - Sounds like you are doing things the right way, slow and steady. Those squates can be a killer! Keep it up.

Mike - How is your training going? Did the weather hold out for your long run over the weekend?

Gretchen - How is your knee? I think you can't go wrong with babying something that you've hurt. Better safe than sorry. Did you get your additional 2 feet? I can't believe how crazy this winter has been!

My weekend went pretty good, I did 5 miles on the treadmill. I intended to do 6 or 7, but I was so bored after 4.5 that I had to really push for that last half mile. I thought I was going to go crazy! Really need to be doing those outside. When will I learn? :rolleyes1

Cross me off the DL 1/2 :( Can't afford the trip right now...so mom and I will be doing the Detroit Free Press 1/2 on Oct 16 - much closer to home! This will be my mom's first 1/2!

Sorry you had to cancel. :sad1:But at least you will get to do the Detroit 1/2 with your Mom.:) I did my first half with my daughter and it was wonderful. You both are very lucky to be able to share that experience.
Andrea - thanks for asking about the knee. It is improving. I went outside today to walk and it did OK. I was very careful, though, since it was very, very icy. I feel your pain about the long miles on the TM. :crazy2:I always get so bored about the 3m mark and it just drags on from there.
So, all is going well for me and I'm just taking each day and hoping I can at least get some walking in so that I don't get to stale.
Take care Rebels.

Gretchen Take it easy on the ice. Treadmill is better than slipping and re-injuring a knee. Can you watch TV while on the treadmil. The only reason I can get through long treadmil runs is that at the Y I can watch ESPN, and I don't have cable at home.

Michelle Sorry about missing Disneyland. Maybe next year. There is a half in Niagara that I was looking at near you that looks fun to run in also.

Andrea Sorry your run got cut short last week, is the weather OK to get outside this weekend? This should be the last long run before princess. Did you get your bib number, mine is 4197.

The weather here was unseasonably warm last weekend, it got up into the 50s and we extended our long run to 14 miles and decided to start our taper a week early. Today it is scheduled at 10 miles and it is snowing out. I'll wait to tomorrow, but this weekend may be on the treadmill.

Hello everyone,
It's been a while since I have checked in. I'm trying to keep up on some running during this crazy cold winter. I have only been getting a day or two on the treadmill each week. I signed up for a race in April that is 7.7 miles so I need to get in gear because right now I am only doing 2 or 3. I've been trying to get to the gym to do some strength training twice a week too. I hope everyone is doing well this winter.

Welcome back Hokie, what's the significance of the 7.7 mile distance?

It got up in the mid 40s today, so DW & I got in 11 outside. Last long run before Princess. Now I'm just watchin' the Pack in the superbowl!

/
I've been trying to keep up with the walking and Zumba since I have no races coming up soon.
Also, just wanted to bump this up and say I will be thinking about all of you who are participating in the Princess race.:yay:
Way to go, Rebels:cool1::thumbsup2

I'm not sure why it's 7.7. I guess that's just how the trail worked out. There is a 2 mile walk/run, a 4.9 mile and 7.7.

Gretchen Thanks for the cheers. I think just Andrea and I are running Princess. All 3 of DWs sisters ended up flaking out, so it's a good think I ended up registering.

Tapering is kicking my butt mentally. I want to run this weekend, and 4-6 is just not going to cut it.

Michelle - Sorry you won't get to do the DL race this year, but you and your mom will have a lot of fun doing her first race together! There will be another chance to do DL.

Gretchen - Glad your knee is improving. Keep taking care of it. Hopefully spring will be here soon so you won't have to worry about the ice for much longer. How are you liking the Zumba? Still digging it?

cwnhokie - Hey, welcome back! Keep logging those miles. 7 miles will be a snap if you keep doing something every week.

Mike - It's just going to be you running the Princess this year. (More on that below.) What a problem to have, not liking the taper! You will do great at Princess and I can't wait to hear the trip report from you and your wife's race.

As for me not doing the Princess - I've decided to not attempt it. I haven't trained like I should, and rather than struggle so badly like I did for my Rock n Roll, or get swept like I did for the Wine n Dine, I'm just going to cheer for this one. I have nothing against getting swept at all, but I thought about it for a long time, and I decided I want this Disney trip to be just fun, not getting up super early and being sore for days afterward. It's been a long time since I went to Disney just to play, and I want to do that this time. After I made the decision, I felt like a huge weight was lifted off of my shoulders, so I know I made the right choice for me.

Andrea - You know what they say about "all work and no play". I am glad you are comfortable with your decision to not do the Princess and take the time out to "play" at Disney. I'm all for it; go and have a wonderful time.

I am still really enjoying the Zumba. My daughter and I go every Tuesday and meet up with 3 of my very dear friends. We are not those die-hard exercise fanatics; we just go and have fun. It keeps us older girls moving as we watch those younger girls (like my daughter) really work out. We will be signing up again this week for another month. It gets me out and moving at least.

Mike and Rose - good luck this weekend! Will be thinking about you and the Princess and awaiting those details upon your return.

Thinking of my Rebel teammates who are at the Princess Half today or even those just enjoying the World. Wish I was there with you but know I am cheering you all on.
ENJOY

GretchenThanks for the good wishes, we had a great time at Princess. I think we will be back next year.

Andrea I am glad you enjoyed your trip. I did not read your post, so I was looking for you at meets and the "W" tent. Maybe we can meet you at a future race. You made the right decision not to run, it's supposed to be fun and rewarding.

This was one of the best trips to Disney we have had. Weather was great. Friday AM we went to the Expo and met some WISHers. Her fairy godmother recognized Rose and asked her about me. At first she (FGM) decided that I was a footman, but after learning that I was there to carry the water she decided I was a dromedary (I think that is an Aladin reference, but I missed that movie.) Also saw a little bit of Braves spring training.
After making our way through ASSports and DHS back to BWV I saw a bus leaving marked "PRINCESS HALF MARATHON - YACHT CLUB BOARDWALK". After asking 3 cast members we found out there was a bus. We were excited because there was not supposed to be since BWV was not a host resort.
Friday evening there was a meet at ASSports. After getting back to BWV we decided to check with the desk on the bus again. There was a crowd of angry Princess because the manager was saying there was no bus. After the crowd thinned out I asked him about getting a cab. He said not to worry he would have the cabs lined up, since they are all there at 2:00 whent he clubs close, he would just have them come back.
Saturday just before 3 we get outside and there are no cabs. We asked bell services about getting a cab to the race, and he told us there was a bus, so everything worked out. We made it to Epcot and had met several WISHers at the "W" tent.
Race was great. Wave start worked well, even with 14,000+ racers, start was smoother and less congested than Wine&Dine. We saw some wishers cheering near the TTC. They had the green wish shirts and green hair. Race finished well. Rose had a PR by more than 12 minutes.
After the race we got cleaned up and walked around World Showcase with a celebratory drink. During this walk I thought up a twist on dringing around the world, but I'll save it for a diffferent post. Later that night we met more WISHers at Boma for dinner and then more celebratory beverages at Jellyrolls.
All in all an outstanding day.

Mike

Hey Mike, still here.
Just looked at your Princess Run pics and video. Very nice. You got some good castle shots in there. Daughter and I are thinking of doing the Princess in 2012; not sure yet. She also would like to do the Wine and Dine this year. So, we are trying to decide. She really wants to keep me moving.
Nothing exciting to report for me. Trying to get out there and stay on top of the walking since the weather is finally getting nice here in NJ.
Keep on, keeping on!
TTFN

Hi Gretchen,
Princess was fun, and so is Wine and Dine. Probably will do both W&D 11 and Princess 12. Look forward to seeing you at one of them.

Thanks Mike. Will definitely be doing one of them; good reason to go to Disney.
Just heard from my son and he will be joining us for our Aug. trip to Disney. I'm so excited!!! I haven't seen him for over a year since he is stationed in Alaska with the Coast Guard. It will truly be a family gathering since all my kids will be there and we just booked a Grand Villa at OKW. This vacation will sorta determine which race we attend.
Raining here now so don't know if I'll walk outside or hit the TM.
TTFN

Gretchen,
your august trip with your family sounds like fun. A year is a long time. DS will still go to Disney with us now that he is in college. He came down last W&D. Didn't run, just partied.

Mike
