The REAL religion?....

You obviously haven't seen the current abortion thread; some folks there are so sure that their religion is the only true religion that they don't even recognize their perspective as being shaped based on their religious beliefs.

Views like these are why I don't follow a religion !

I think there is nothing wrong with organized religion as long as people do not forget to separate God from the humans that say they represent Him. The two are not the same.

In my humble opinion I've seen some people's devotion to clergy & even spouse sometimes contradict most religion's teachings against idolatry. I think this is where people get into the most trouble. What is it they say, "the road to (you know where) is paved with good intentions"

I'd just like to refer you to the first quote in my signature...

I believe any faith is a wonderful thing for people to have and believe. I live in a multi cultural area and live alongside; Christians, orthodox Jewish (the biggest community in Europe), Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist.

I find that I disagree with aspects of all these religions but am happy to live alongside people and their different faiths, and find it interesting to learn more about them!:)

I'm English by the way!

Whichever way your going come judgement day i hope i am with you,
just dont send me with the crackpot , my way is the only way brigade.

Tolerance of others and their beliefs is what i was taught by my mother and father, Irish catholics and proud to be so.

Also, not all Christians acknowldege or recognize the Apostle's Creed which states Jesus descended into hell before he went to heaven. This is not stated in the bible at all.

We say for the Nicene Creed," He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day,he ascended into heaven"

The Apostle's Creed,
" He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended unto the dead. On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father."

I'm Catholic and that's the way we've always said it. I think things get crossed. Hell and the dead are sometimes used interchangably in the prayer. They meant the same thing. Hell or Purgatory-where the dead went before they were released to Heaven by Jesus' dying for their sins and allowing them to get to Heaven. No one went to Heaven before Jesus died and saved them.

I'm Roman Catholic. I like the religion. It works for me.

I have no problem with people being other religions that work for them.

I tend to ignore people who say their religion is the one true religion...that's their opinion, not mine.

I don't get too caught up in all that baloney. Do what works for you.

Jesus is the Truth. Acceptance of His death, burial, & resurrection as payment for our sins is the only way to God/Heaven/eternal life.

Jesus said:

13"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Matthew 7:13-14

I am glad that works for you..but everybody does not believe in that. I believe there is more then one way to heaven;)

I'm half Muslim and half Catholic (if you believe that religion is inherited rather than chosen). I was baptised as a baby, but my younger brother wasn't. For junior high, my parents sent me to a Catholic school to avoid some bad things at the public one. On the first day of religion class, the nun announced that everyone who wasn't baptised was going to H***. I was so shocked that this woman who didn't know my father or brother was telling me what was going to happen to them in the afterlife, no matter how good they were in this life! Strangely, this nun had a sign hanging in her classroom that read, "Religion is what we do with the presence of God." That always sounded very accepting of different faiths to me :confused3 .

Anyway, I am related to Jews, Muslims, Catholics, possible a Buddhist, and some Athiests. There's no way that I could choose the "real" religion among them because they are all my family.

The last time a family member from the "only we are going to heaven" church told me that. I asked her if she truly thought her grandparents and great grandparents didn't make it? She couldn't or wouldn't answer my question and has NEVER brought it up to me again.

From a Christian standpoint, the roadmap, provided in the New Testament, is clear. In order to be a Christian (i.e. spend eternity in heaven), one must 1) acknowledge that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 2) acknowledge and believe that Jesus died to redeem us from those sins; 3) confess Christ as Lord of your life (behaviors change because of #3).

That's it, boiled down. IMO (and only my opinion...), everything else is just "religion" and gingerbread. If you're Catholic, Methodist, Episcopalian, Baptist, etc. etc. ad nauseum, it all boils down to those three steps. The interpretation of #3 is what makes organized religion (and it's what ticked Jesus off about the Sadduccees and Pharisees).

Absolutely correct!! :thumbsup2 Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but through me" and that's where people's focus needs to be.

The only people I have ever heard referring to one religion as being the only "true" religion have been Jehovah's Witnesses.

Nope there are others. Some S. Baptist believe it. Most Church of Christ believe it.

There is one local Non-Demonational church that the followers believe only THEY are going to heaven. Just their church, no others. The preacher had all the women in the church remove their wedding rings and "gift" them to the church. He said they didn't need proof of a marrige as their only true relationship is their relationship with God. The offering plate was passed around and the women placed their rings in the plate. The church has just built a newer and bigger church with a lot of land, for the followers to build. The preacher has told all the followers to give their homes to the church and the church will build them a home on the land.

Let's just say we are all watching this with interest!

Thanks all for the replies! It was very interesting reading through the different answers. I also don't necessarily believe their is "one" true religion but do believe this is America so can believe what you want.

I guess it stumped me because really I had never been taught that this particular religion was the "one". As a matter of fact I don't think I heard much about it until my adulthood. I am thinking the way it was presented to me was in such a my way or the highway, I would have been open to the idea. Or at least not felt so disturbed by the whole idea.

I am glad that there are many that believe as I do, whatever road you believe takes you there is the "right" road.

I am only asking this because I'm curious. I'm not trying to be disrespectful in any way. I've just never been brave enough to ask any of my friends who are Jewish in person. What do Jewish people believe will happen to Christians when they die?

That's not a disrespectful question at all. The Jewish and Christian religions are very closely linked, minus the whole Jesus thing ;) My mom's Jewish and my dad's Catholic and although none of us are particularly religious, it is something we talk about. Jews believe that Christians go to heaven. It's not as set-in-stone as some other religions, and there are many different interpretations of heaven and hell (or if there's even a hell).

I know people have different beliefs but similarly, what do Christians think happen to Jews after they die? Can Jews still get to heaven without believing in Jesus? After all, there wasn't a Jesus in the First Testament. It's interesting to think about.

Anyway, getting back to the original question, I don't at all think there's one "TRUE" religion. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who do, but it's something I've never understood. Isn't religion supposed to be about love and acceptance? So if a group of people are good people and don't hurt anyone, how could they be "going to hell" simply for not believing in certain aspects of another religion? It's all very hypocritical to me, but I accept everyone and their faiths, or their lack-of.

I'm Southern Baptist. While we do believe Jesus is the only way to Heaven, we DO NOT teach that only SBs will be in Heaven. We believe all who trust in Christ will be in Heaven. The rest is just details.

So what happens to Jews?

That's why I said Some. ;)

Not all of the Southern Baptist are that way. But there are some out there that I have tell met who say only they (S. Baptist) will see heaven.
