The Punk/Hard Rock Thread

I don't consider Green Day punk... its more top 40.

Give me stuff like the Dead Milkmen and the Dead Kennedys and now we are talking!
.

Thank you!! I was thinking REAL punk like the Sex Pistols, DOA, X, etc. If they play it on mainstream radio stations, it ain't punk! Even The Clash became more "new wave" when they hit the top 40. Remember sewing razor blades into your leather jacket and then going out and slam dancing? That's punk!!! :thumbsup2

Big heavy metal fan here, especially bands from the 80's.

Favorite bands from the 80's:

Dokken, Motley Crue, Dio, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Metallica ....

Loved most of the alternative music from the 90's:

Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Bush ....

Also, love a couple of bands, not sure how to classify them, they are:

Depeche Mode and Cheap Trick................

Bands I'm really into right now are:

Institute (Gavin Rossdale); 30 Seconds to Mars; Linkin Park...........most other new stuff/bands stink!!

I think Maiden is releasing a new album called "A Matter of Life and Death". :thumbsup2

I even liked different avant garde stuff like Cocteau Twins (sort of Enya-esque), Jello Biafra spoken word album, Henry Rollins, and the interesting work of Mojo Nixon.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!
It has always bothered me that Green Day is labeled a punk rock band. Maybe pop punk or top 40 but never punk rock.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Many of the bands mentioned in this thread were favorites of mine when I was a teenager 20 years ago. Like the Dead Milkmen, the Dead Kennedys, Husker Du, the Violent Femmes, Joy Division and The Ramones.

New York Dolls
The Cramps
The Ramones
Sex Pistols
The Clash

Mott The Hoople (and Ian Hunter's later stuff) might fit in here, too.

For something more recent, hmmm...closest would be The White Stripes (or Jack White's new collaboration: The Raconteurs)

You didn't have a good time out slamming unless you got bruised! I never used razors, but had some good steel toed boots!

Totally agree with others on Green Day. They're not punk, or even hard rock.

I would say my favorite punk band of today is the Dresden Dolls. They are called punk/cabaret with a light burlesque twist.

On the hard rock side it would be Eighteen Visions. They kick a$$.

jet down here for Next Big Thing 6:

My Chemical Romance
Taking Back Sunday
30 Seconds To Mars
Angels and Airwaves
Three Days Grace
Blue October
Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Kill Hannah
Say Anything

I'm too young to remember real punk, lol... and I've never really gotten into it, but I do like what I know of The Ramones and The Clash, and probably others.

But it's mainly pop-punk for me... Mest, New Found Glory (whom my boyfriend is currently meeting without me :guilty: ), NOFX, Allister, Blink 182, Rancid, MxPx, etc.

older school good music:

Jesus and Mary Chain
Echo and the Bunnymen
Dead Milkmen
Smiths
The Cure
Sonic Youth
The Replacemants
Social Distortion
REM
Pixies
The Meatmen
Flipper
Violent Femmes....

newer stuff:

Foo Fighters are the best I've ever seen

Breaking Benjamin
Disturbed
GODSMACK

My Chem's showing some good stuff.

This is closer to my list. I'm really old school and still like AC/DC (what are they considered anyway?). I also like the Chili Peppers, The Clash, & a bunch more.

Green Day is really only considered "punk" because that's the scene they sprung out of. The guys themselves I guess are punk, or used to be way back when. ;) Their music, though, hasn't ever really been punk.

They're still good though! :thumbsup2

I love, love, the Dresden Dolls! Girl Anachronism is SO my song.

Gotta love Coin-Operated Boy, too :p

Now...when did The Cure become "punk/hard rock"??? They're one of my favourite bands...and even though Mad Bob would probably cringe to be told this, I've always seen them referred to as a goth band :confused3

I'm off and on with punk. Used to love it - am now off and on with it. Still have a good stash of the Ramones on my MP3, though. How can you not love them?

But a quick story - last year we were strolling around VA Beach on a Friday night and a shopkeeper asked, "ever hear of the Violent Femmes?"

Yea

"Well," he says "they're playing down on the beach."

And they were! We beelined it down there and they were great. But the kids were so puzzled. Oldest DS actually said "what is this, country?" I told him no, it's funny, just listen. He didn't get it. I can see that.

It was so cool, though - 80s punk outside on the beach....for free!

I used to love Black Flag and can't believe no one mentioned them yet! I think I saw Henry Rollins mentioned though. My 2yo has a Black Flag t-shirt and I was so shocked when her preschool teacher knew who they were and told me she's a big punk fan.
