The Prize for the most Indecisive Traveller

It’s only early afternoon here in NZ and it’s already been a day of highs and lows.
For those with neither the time and/or interest to read about it, I’ll provide a short version along with a longer one.

Short Version

Flights to Sydney are booked meaning this cruise is definitely going ahead.
I discovered again why I really dislike dealing with travel agents.
We are flying return to Sydney Business Class on LAN.

Longer Version

When I booked the cruise I was aware how scarily expensive flights at that time of the year would be. I had checked prior to booking the cruise, and the cheapest return flight I could get was about $600 p/p which was a special with Emirates. It’s not the flight there that was the issue, it’s the flight home. We’re flying home just a few days before Xmas day so I think it’s unlikely that this flight will get much cheaper.
However, I went ahead with the cruise booking deciding that the very cheap price of the cruise still made the whole trip good value for money.

I’ve been checking flight prices daily over the last week and the cheapest I could find this morning was NZ$650p/p with China Airlines. I started to get worried that not only would the flights not get cheaper, but they might get much more expensive.

After exhausting every airline combination and every flight route, just for the fun of it, I decided to price up business. I was really excited to see that LAN had a special on Business Class for NZ$790 p/p. For just $140 more p/p over the cheapest economy, we could get business class including access to the Qantas lounges, and lie flat seats. The flight times aren’t the greatest, but LAN do get pretty good reviews. So I decided that this was the way to go.

The only problem is that I did not have enough reward dollars to cover return flights for both of us. I would need to pay the remainder out of pocket using the CC.

I went on to the travel agents website to try and book online, but the website would not allow me to use 2 different payment methods for the same booking. Plus they wanted to charge me an online fee of $15 p/p.

So I packed the family into the car and we drove over half an hour to the nearest physical store. The lady priced up the flights and quoted me $120 more than what I had found online. I had a print off from the LAN website to show them what they should be quoting me and even said that their own website didn’t ask for that much. She explained that booking in store required a fee of $50 p/p. $50!!!!

I was horrified and asked how they expected to keep business with fees like that. Especially when websites such as Expedia will match the airlines.
I could hear her getting grumpy and she started putting on the 'hard sell' to try and get me to book something. She first tried to tell me that everyone charges fees these days, including websites such as Expedia (Lies). Then she said that people were booking for this Christmas back in November last year (also Lies) so there wasn’t much availability left. And then she tried to sell me on the merits of economy on China Airlines (perhaps lies? I’ve never flown with them).

So I left the store grumpy and we drove home empty handed. I count that as 90mins of my life I’ll never get back.

Once home, I sat for ages trying to work out how I was actually going to be able to use these reward dollars, when I had a brainwave. I would book my seat using reward dollars through the agent's website, and I would book DH's seat out of pocket using the LAN website.

So using two computers at once, I made the bookings simultaneously to avoid a price rise between bookings. It was a bit stressful, but it worked.

I didn’t quite get to use up all my reward dollars, but I would rather that than get stung with horrendous fees. I had to pay $15 in fees for myself, but that's nothing to loose sleep over. It could have been much worse.

So it worked out in the end, and I now have business class flights to look forward to. :cool1:

If you managed to read all of this, you deserve a big :thumbsup2

OMG! I can't believe that you had that experience with a travel agent. What agent doesn't price match these days??? Especially when they have the customer sitting there in the shop with a print out of the on-line price!

Sadly, you're only reinforcing views I hold already. I know there might be a few TAs out there that do a great job and really do put the customer first; but I find that they are few and far between. In any event, I'm too much of a control freak to leave any of my bookings in the hands of a TA that I didn't personally know or trust.

In any event, great brainwave for how to get the system to work for you and the family. And YAY :cheer2: for having flights booked.

BTW - Did you take a look at the cruise tours for Melbourne? Was there anything that you particularly wanted to see?

I know! I thought everyone price-matched. I also thought most travel agents got the bulk of their commission through the hotels and airlines rather than the actual customer. I have to imagine that any agent that hikes up their fees like that is going to struggle in what is rapidly becoming an online world.
I was most annoyed by the way she tried to convince me that all agents charge such fees. That spiel might have work on someone much more naive, but not me.

I think from now on I will just use my reward dollars for clothing etc.

The one good thing I got from the agent is a brochure on Melbourne. I plan to have a browse through it tonight. I did have a quick look at the cruise organised tours and there were heaps more options than in Tasmania. It was a bit overwhelming so I didn't look for long. The options included some strange ones. The strangest I thought was a 7 hour return drive to the 12 Apostles. It mentioned that the drive didn't even follow the coastline, but went an inland route. I don't get it? The 12 Apostles look great, but who would want to use their one and only day in Melbourne to spend 7 hours on the road to spend about an hour on the coast. Maybe I'm missing something?

I also have to work out what to do in Sydney.

Our flight into Sydney arrives about 7:40am on the day of the cruise. Our flight home leaves the day after the cruise finishes, so we need one night in a Sydney hotel.

Ideally I would like to have played it safe and had a night before the cruise instead of after. However this organisation made the flights even more expensive. Given that we don't have to be onboard until about 5pm, we should be okay.

Presuming we arrive on time, I need to work out what to do with our luggage for the day while we go see Sydney. Any suggestions?

Congrats on the business class :cool1:
Unfortunately my TA doesn't match prices either and they charge a $100 pp booking fee for international flights, so I don't book any of my flights through her. I still love her and book cruises, tours and hotels through her, as long as she is cheaper or same price. I trust her fully, our Croatia tour is $20000, she arranged it all, as it was a private tour she spent hours with the wholesaler sorting an itinerary out that she knew we would like that encompassed everything we wanted, she did the hard work so will earn her comission:thumbsup2
In regards to Sydney, by the time you are through immigration etc, I would go straight to circular quay and drop your bags at the port, then go and spend a few hours in the city and around the harbour. They normally will start checking bags around 9-10am, as people generally start to check in from 10am.

That's great to know. I wondered if we could check our bags early and it's great to hear we can.

Fees aside, it's great that you've found an agent you like. I think I've come across so many bad agents that I've lost faith in them. Also, like PIO, I like to have control of my own bookings.

That Croatia tour sounds like it is going to be pretty special. How many days is it?

Also, you must be pretty close now to leaving? I can only imagine how excited you must be.

Our Croatia tour is 12nights, starting in Dubrovnik and ending in Rovinj, with a ferry to Venice. They have booked the ferry to Venice as part of the tour.
We leave in 12 days, nearly 11, cause I'll be going to bed in about 5 hours:rotfl:

Really getting excited now, my DS leaves on Monday to do two contiki tours prior to meeting up with us after my cruise on the 19th. Once I get rid of him, it will down hill and fast:yay:

In regards to your cruise, do you know what time you sail? Normally you have to be on the boat 2 hours prior to sailing, if it's a 4pm sailing most people probably check in before lunch, if it's an 8pm sailing people will most likely will start checking in around 2. Gotta make use of the free alcohol package:cool1:

I believe it sails at 6:30pm, so I guess we'll be able to check in around lunchtime.

Gogo65, I found this helpful list of all the drinks menus from the Reflection. I imagine all the ships charge about the same prices.

It looks like there are plenty of cocktails included in the classic package, so I'm happy. :)

http://www.thepreismans.com/ecarib_reflection_menus.htm

I was trying to find that blog for you:rotfl:
I read it a few months back and it is referenced a fair bit when people ask questions about reflection and considering I'm sailing on the reflection, it was very valuable:worship:
As far as I know the bar prices are all the same on every boat, however different bars have different drinks, although you can always ask for whatever you want in any of the bars.
I was talking to my friend the other day that I'm going on the cruise with, we were talking about wine at dinner, we came to the agreement that if we were buying wine without the drinks package, we would most likely buy wine by the glass and pick the cheapest, so being on the classic package won't change our drinking habits too much:rotfl2:
I'm not a martini drinker at all, it seems people tend to upgrade to get the fancy martinis or the really fancy cocktails, so if you like Martinis that may be a consideration.

Mojitos are my drinks of choice. Followed by fruity drinks like Piña Coladas. It looks like I will be okay getting some of these with the Classic package so I'm happy.

Just so I can get a Martini from the Martini ice bar I might pay for 1 out of pocket. That will still work out cheaper than upgrading for the whole week. Not that the upgrade is too expensive. An extra $80 to pretty much have choice of anything on the ship is still pretty tempting. The thing I love about cruises is how the food menus come with no prices. You pick what you want, not what is best value for money. I must admit it would be quite nice feeling the same way about drinks.
Plenty of time to decide. :)

I'm thinking the same, either just pay out of pocket for the occasional expensive drink, or just upgrade the last few days and enjoy maybe 3-4 days of the premium if I think I will need it, or just upgrade the whole thing for the 7nights and not worry at all.

The 12 Apostles are lovely to look at; but it's more about the journey there as well as the destination. The Great Ocean Road is fantastic to drive. The inland route is pretty boring.

I wouldn't want to spend 7 hours on the road to only see the 12 Apostles; not when the rest of the GOR is tantalisingly 'right there'!

Yet another of those awful experiences that put me off using TAs :sad2: Glad you figured it all out in the end and got your business class flights

I nearly fell off my chair when I read about the 12 Apostles shore excursion :scared1: IMO the 12 Apostles are not the best part of the Great Ocean Road. Besides the fact that there are not that many left, it was ridiculously crowded, and over-touristy. It's worth seeing if you are doing the GOR, but I certainly wouldn't go that far out of my way to see it. And driving inland, there's not much to see on the way either.

I would love to drive the Great Ocean Road one day as I'm a big fan of scenic road trips. But a rushed one day tour is certainly not how I visualise seeing it.
Besides, I've never even seen Melbourne, so the GOR will need to wait for another year. :)

I've never even been to the GOR and I nearly fell off my chair too.

About 3 1/2 hours from where I live there is a 12 Apostles miniature called the 3 Sisters. I compared that GOR tour to doing a day trip to the coast to the 3 sisters and I can't imagine a bigger waste of a day.

You'll want at least 2 - 3 nights to experience it properly. There are a couple of little towns worth staying at.

I figured as such.

One day I will probably take about a week to explore the area properly, but at present it's just not top of my priorities. My bucket list is just too long.

There are plenty of places I want to see in Australia and NZ too, and we're slowly getting through them. But I figure there will be plenty of time for that later when we're getting too old to want to do long haul flights all the time :thumbsup2

This thread has been a bit quiet lately. I've been focusing on work, paying bills, and a short holiday to the South Island.

However, with just 5 months left to go, I thought I'd better sit down this morning and write up a to-do list. It was scarily long.

Normally I can't wait for a holiday to arrive, but with this one I feel like 5 months is approaching almost too quickly. :hourglass Perhaps if my holiday savings looked a bit healthier I'd feel differently :rotfl:

Anyway, whinging aside, I made a few ADRs this morning for Aulani including a character breakfast for my son's birthday. I also booked a Pearl Harbour tour for DH and my MIL. I've decided to skip the tour myself and have a mother and son morning with my son instead. As much as I like visiting historical places, I've decided that after such a busy trip in Yellowstone I will be happy spending my 3 days in Hawaii floating around the lazy river with my son. Forced relaxation of sorts. :beach:

Also, incase anyone is interested, I have finally updated my first post to include my most up-to-date plans. :goodvibes

Great plans.

Good on you for having a mother and son morning so that your MiL can have her own mother and son morning. :thumbsup2
