If there ever was a reason to maintain the death penalty, this duo should be on the poster. Steven Hayes trial concluded today and the jury has began its deliberations. Of course this is Ct. and I doubt that he, nor his accomplish Komisarjevsky will ever see "old sparky". Michael Ross had to beg to have his death sentence carried out and he almost didn't get his wish. This of course was a heinous crime that not only captivated Ct. but the nation. Reliving the details was bad enough for those of us who did not know the Petit's. I can't imagine the anguish of Dr. Petit who lost three beautiful and wonderful women.

Jurors began deliberations Monday in the trial of Steven Hayes, the man accused of killing three members of a Connecticut family in a 2007 home invasion.

Hayes, 47, who has pleaded not guilty, is on trial in New Haven, Connecticut, for the murders of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters.

The killings took place in the New Haven suburb of Cheshire early July 23, 2007. The home of William Petit, his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and two daughters was invaded in the middle of the night by Hayes and co-defendant Joshua Komisarjevsky, prosecutors say.

I agree. There seems to be no doubt that they did it. This was just a horrifying crime. Pure evil. I can't imagine living with the pain that Dr. Petit must endure.

What the defense has been reduced to is not that they "didn't do it", but who did what. Killing one person only, Hayes avoids the death penalty. Raping and burning the 11 year old means First degree felony murder. The prosecutor's consistent message was that two people committed this crime and it required two people.

Those sick, sick monsters..... :( Everytime I hear that story I think of those 2 little girls, especially, and how scared they must have been. :( Poor angels...

This is one case that has so haunted me. I do the "what ifs" all of the time.
1. What if the police went in earlier?
2. The oldest dd was found at the top of the stairs. What if she thought to jump out the window.
The most upsetting thing I heard during the trial is that the weapon was a bb gun. I am sure it looked so real but could they have run out of the door? Of course, all of this is from 20/20 hind sight but the case is so sickening.

At the bank, the Jennifer did everything right. She was calm, withdrew the money, told the teller, etc. etc.

I just read an article today on this somewhere, cnn/aol maybe? Truly horrible. I cant imagine him sitting in the courtroom have to relive this.

I have been following this horrific story.

I believe the defendants were ready to agree to life without parole, and the whole reason to go to trial was to get the death penalty.

Dr. Petit has been the model of dignity and grace. I can't imagine what he is going through. :sad1: :sad1:

He has been absolutely amazing. The defense has tried to bait him even suggesting that he "may have been in on it" for the insurance money. and he has just maintained his dignity. A few times he has had to leave, appearing quite ashen. His wife and his daughters were absolutely beautiful. I can't imagine the anguish he has gone through.

Wow, didn't know there was a certain number of people one could kill and in such a heinous way before one got the death penalty. Despicable.

He also did not want to be convicted of raping the 11 year old daughter either. They both know they will never leave prison alive. In fact, Hayes attempted suicide earlier this year but survived. He may have survived with some brain damage. He had supposedly had a seizure a few weeks ago and his trial was delayed a day or two.

Never thought I'd say this, but Dawn I agree with you 100%. ;)

These two monsters don't deserve the chair. They deserve to be tortured each and every day, by whatever means necessary, for the rest of their pathetic lives.

I'm generally not a huge fan of the death penalty, for a lot of reasons. But it is cases like this which is why I'm not totally against it. I certainly won't be upset if that's what he's sentenced to.

I think that they deserve the death penalty. I would like to see them get it, after they live in fear of dying for a while. Of course by the time the State of Ct. gets around to killing them, (only one has gone to trial so far), there will be the "crying candle holders" who will lament that "he turned his life around". If that won't make me sick. Michael Ross murdered several young girls in Ct. He begged to die and even then, the State of Ct. almost failed to kill him.

Whatever method is employed, make sure it involves having their heads locked and their eyelids clamped open, so they have to endure the image below that will be hung in front of them as they endlessly suffer:

I also hope every voter in CT sends a message in November to every elected official or political candidate in that state who is against having these creeps terminated.

I intend to.
I would have no problem being the one to flip the switch. Actually, in my crankier moments I think they should be tied to a bed, raped by a couple of guys and then have the house set on fire.

But I'm trying to get beyond my really bad self and just go with "get rid of them bcause they do not deserve to walk among people who are trying to be decent", which I think the majority of people do try to do.

That picture brings tears to my eyes.

It doesn't matter in the slightest that they were beautiful. But, they truly were.

Such a sad sad case. I'm praying for the husband that he may go on to live some semblence of a happy life, although it is beyond me how that is possible :(

I almost skipped this thread until I saw it was posted by Dawn and figured it must have substance to it. Yes, nothing less than the death penalty in this case. We can argue that the death penalty doesn't deter crime, but it sure stops the same people from doing it again!

Sickening SICKENING.... I was born and raised in the town next to Cheshire, CT.. and I still can not believe this happened so close to home and to such an innocent family!!!!

And to think the one guy has a daughter!! How could he do that?! The whole thing is sickening and disheartening. UGH! This world needs less people like these 2 men and more families like the Petit's.

Such a terrible story, I didn't know of it before now. Then again, I tend to try and avoid these sorts of stories because they upset me so much. Personally I am of the opinion that IF a person is capable of certain acts he/she has no conscience and therefore can't be sorry. If you don't have a conscience how can you be capable of a contrite heart? Sometimes evil just walks around in a human suit.

I can say with total honesty that my heart doesn't hold a single drop of mercy for anyone that gets pleasure from hurting others, and nothing but hate for situations where that includes a child.

Onto more stable ground though, I thought if someone dies during the commission of a felony EVERYONE involved is guilty of the same crime in the eyes of the law. Could be I'm wrong but I know someone whose nephew is in jail for 2 life terms because he & 3 friends robbed a gas station and while they were outside 1 of the friends went in and killed the 2 shop keepers in cold blood.
