The police are here at OKW

Sorry to hear you are having so much excitement and your DD is not feeling well. You have a great attitude!

I will say, that this gives me pause, because we are guilty of of loading our mini van up the day before our departure or to switch resorts and leaving it locked in the parking lot.

Dh hates using bell services so I humor him, but our vacation would be ruined if someone stole all our stuff and we would be out of some expensive belongings (nothing fancy but still costly to replace) so I think in the future, we will either stay (even on weekends) put or use bell services.

Thanks for the warning!

As far as I know, nothing was taken from this one car. The window broken on this car was the small back side window. And the guy cut himself and left some blood behind.

So far, we still love OKW, but we have 5 more nights here...who knows! ;) We'll always remember this trip, that's for sure. The poor guy who borrowed his brother's car! Having to deal with getting it fixed on vacation really stinks.

With DD sick, and DH out with the other kids, I've been going out for walks to the store, and around the resort. I almost went out one last time last night, but now I think I'd be a bit uncomfortable walking around here in the dark, AND leaving DD here alone (she'll be 17 on Monday, so I COULD leave her). Of course things happen everywhere, but it's so easy to feel immune from it at Disney. This is a wakeup call. I probably would have let the kids (17 yr old DD, almost 15 DD, and 12 DS) walk over to the pool/community hall/store together in the dark too, before this.

I know this sounds mean but I hope the guy cut himself real good and had to get a bunch of stitches. Maybe the can track him down.

We only personally know of one car, belonging to the guy we spoke with outside, and he told us he was told there were 3 others, but I'm not sure where. We're staying in the mid to upper 20's area.

Geez, between this thread and the other post about the BTK killer (no comparison i know) I just got up to shut all the windows, turn the outside lights on, and double check the door locks.

Oh no, I like staying in the Pennisular bus stop area! Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!

Unfortunately these things happen. I stayed at Celebration Resort in May and a car alarm went off. Those of us in the units went outside to find out what was causing the alarms. With everybody coming out, you could see somebody, man, probably early twenties, running from a van (where the alarm was going off). Surprizingly, the security guard shack (entrance) was probably a couple hundred yards or so away and did not make any response (suspect they never even heard it). Our guess was that is was a guest on the resort as it does take effort to get onto the resort but who really knows. Don't let these things ruin your vacation but do take reasonable precautions.

I suspect that this, unfortuately, is a common occurence at WDW (and probably other tourist spots too) and is not resort specific. When we were there a couple of weeks ago, it was reported on the news that several cars were broken into at Typhoon Lagoon. I also recall this happening at Epcot a while ago. And I remember reading on the DIS a couple of years ago how someone drove off with a familiy's minivan packed with all of their luggage from the front of a resort while the family was either checking in or out.

Tourists are easy targets. They are in an unfamiliar setting and they are on vacation so they tend to let their guard down.

We just got home from OKW and this past tuesday night, we heard sirens, looked out our balcony door didnt see anything, then i went to look out the front door and all i seen was flashing lights 3 fire trucks...... firemen putting their gear on......going into the building connected to ours.... here to find out that an air conditioner burned out and the smoke set the fire alarms off in that building. Thank goodness it wasnt a real fire and no one got hurt.

WOW!
I can't believe cars were broken into like that. I always felt our stuff was safe on property but I guess you can't be too careful!

I agree w/Diane...people seem to be lulled into a false sense of security just because they are at Disney. It's hard to say who the culprit was, might have even been someone's teenage kid that was staying at the resort. We have never experienced any type of theft during numerous visits to WDW and DL, but have always been cautious as well.

Let's face it, Not-So-Nice people like WDW too. When we were leaving Orlando after our last visit, there was a family sitting in the seats in front of us that had Disney Cruise luggage tags all over their stuff. They proceeded to get into a knock-down, drag-out fight and were actually screaming obscenities at each other during the boarding process. I'm talking mom, dad, kids: F-this, F-that. It was horrible! My DS was show shocked by it that he didn't want to stay on the plane. I leaned over to the dad and told him they either had to stop immediately or I would call the flight attendants and request they be removed from the plane. They finally settled down but it made for an uneasy flight for the next five+ hours. There was certainly no Disney Magic there...:(

There was once a pervert who kept making gestures at me at OKW...
Do you really have to bring that up again? Like I told the sheriff; I wasn't trying to be lewd, I was just stretching after a long, hard work-out in the fitness center. It's not my fault that the sweat-soaked spandex unitard left nothing to the imagination.

How do we know the pervert/thief wasn't a DVC member who stays at OKW because the rooms are bigger, the points required are lower and it's very relaxing?

Sorry, I know this is a serious topic, but that just made me laugh! I hope things settle down and you have a wonderful time!!

...Welcome to Jerry Springer's Fitness Center...

...rink......RRRINNNK!!!!

...you've explored the space just a little bit too far!!! :earseek:

We were at OKW last Oct. and there were many police, sheriff and Disney security in the parking lot at the buildings just across the bridge by the entrance. We saw something going on in that area on more than one occasion that trip. No idea what it was but it sure gave you the sense that all was not safe. That was just before the posts came about the room break ins there.

couldn't this sort of thing happen at BWV too? or any other resort?

Sure, anything can happen at any DVC but OKW just seems more secluded to me than any of the other resorts. The trees and shrubs are more mature, the roads seem to curve around more.

I could smash your car window with a hammer and hardly lose stride while walking back to my hotel room.

Hmmm...... I confess I really don't think of committing such actions as a comparison.

I have felt that security was present at BCV lots, especially with the front gate close, and Valets in and out. Seems like accessibilty may be a factor. SSR may be the most accessible being next to DTD parking. But problems happen anywhere. Seems I remember a hostage situation at BWI within the last year.

Did anyone see the culprit? Were they using a walker?
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
I'm sure it wasn't a BCV owner......

Sorry you had to deal with this crime, and glad you are OK. :sunny:
