the picky kid and his foodie mom (with tiny tummy) ride again... NEW! 3/21 CP PPO, CHH & WCC

I was almost in tears myself reading about your son being sad and how terrible you felt. It’s just the worst feeling when they’re disappointed. :sad1: Don’t beat yourself up! You always do an amazing job planning and your son’s big grin in your photos is a testament to that.

I’m dying over the Ben Franklin costume, that is super cute and I love that he wanted to sit in the Ben Franklin room. Great table location and I am also very much an empty restaurant person.

Those green beans! I so know exactly what you mean by too grean-beany! And god forbid they squeak when I bite into them! Being a Southerner, I like to slow simmer green beans in bacon fat (yep!), some chicken broth, and seasonings, especially a little cayenne. If not that cooking method, then they have to be sautéed or roasted to get some caramelized flavor. The steaming method they use at Disney restaurants just does NOT do it for me.

So now LTT is on my list again for sure, you have given me another option I could go for there in the kid’s pot roast meal, but I will sub for the green beans. :)

it's the best QS if you're on the dining plan IMO. We want to try Homecomin' on our next trip. The wave is always well reviewed and I have eaten there

I think it’s the opposite of how you feel with the wave and homecomin’. Living in Texas, I get easy access to a lot of southern cooking. So I’m not sure the money is worth it at homecomin’. With the wave, we don’t get out much to nice restaurants so the ease and convienence is what made it a home run to eat at the wave again! I definitely want to try having breakfast there! With the California grill brunch, it seems great to use a resort day on it so we can take our time and maybe take three hours to eat there. I’m definitely bringing iPads and coloring books and stickers for the boys then!

But with tax and tip for two adults to eat at BoG it would cost about $140 and with tax and tip CA Grill dinner was about $110. I could have a glass of wine and we could share a dessert and still have food left over for that, and I bet the food will be much better.
That sure is great reasoning about BOG vs California grill and is why I’m considering doing the brunch there instead of BOG dinner!

I'm a little dramatic, but I did feel awful at the time. It did not in any way ruin our day or vacation but he was pretty upset in the moment. Once we got outside and I think he realized how bad I felt about it, he got past it and was like "it was no big deal, mom. We'll come back!" Sometimes he has a hard time letting things go but I'm glad this was not one of them, there was already serious mom guilt!

This is the image he was modeled after, lol. He refused to take the hat and glasses off all day and it was June and hot, I think they convinced him to take it off for recess. He can be part of the school's theater production next year and he can't wait.

I think I must have some southern soul because that is how I make my green beans more or less. I use the prairie woman's recipe for 'best green beans ever' which is basically that with the addition of red peppers and onions (I love both so much) and some garlic... but otherwise basically same method. They are like green bean candy, they are so good! Also when you cut carbs you can miss a nice warm comforting side and that really scratches that itch. SO GOOD. But I make a shrimp dish with creole seasoning, onion, tomato and green beans (I threw it together one night out of what was in the fridge and it was a big hit!) and I blanch them and then shock them and then add them back in to heat through so they stay crisp tender, but no squeaking and no green-beany flavor. So I'm really wondering if it is variety maybe? I don't know. I use the big cheap store brand ones, lol.

Yes, about the regional thing! EXACTLY! I lived texas for a while and would not eat that stuff away from home. Now I live in New England and I feel that way about the Boathouse... WHY? lol. I can buy fresh local scallops here and rarely eat them out anymore because I can pan sear to perfection in 5 minutes in my own home (and do on a regular basis!)... I did on the cruise though and will discuss later. I am almost always disappointed, lol. But there is no good fried chicken here and I LOVE fried chicken but it is not something I indulge in ever anymore, so to me that stuff is "vacation food." We have a lot of... for lack of a better word, "upper end american" around here and a lot of seafood. I just love seafood so much that I do tend to order it out though, I just tend to go for things that are not local to here (not lobster or scallops or clams/chowder). I make shrimp a ton home and I order it out a lot too. Shrimp and Grits is another one that I LOVE, more southern food! I have made it at home but it's made so many different ways I tend to order it out also. I also have never been to Via Napoli either because we have very good pizza here. The kid loves pizza so I keep considering it but it's so loud (per reviews) that I always shy away.

I keep reading these CA Grill brunch reviews and sighing wistfully. I really wish I had tried it when we did the DxDDP on our last trip but it didn't work with the plan that was forged months before and the kid was not keen on what the food looked like. Next time we go he's a Disney adult and although he is more keen on it now, I'm not keen on the price! but part of me is really sure, just let him have some electronic device and I can bring my kindle and sit there for 3 hours and graze, lol. Then walk 10 miles to burn it off!

We ARE planning to take a weekend resort day at Ft. Wilderness though and do the brunch there, so I can get my fried chicken at least ;) MLK weekend will be crowded so I'm thinking sunday we'll RD the MK and then do an 11am horseback riding session (the kid rides at a therapeutic program here and I used to ride when I was younger and thinner, and now i'm well within their weight limits so YAY!), then have brunch at Trail's End (I know, it's no CA Grill but it's under $50 for the two of us, lol) and then maybe do other activities. It should be fun!

A thousand times yes to the regional thing! I live in San Antonio and there’s a lot of multi cultures here with German, Mexican, even Mediterranean food so I’m very spoiled by having access to all the good local food that even delivers! That may be why I can’t shut up about how amazing and cheap les Halles is because French pastry here can be expensive! I did not get to try the macrons in Epcot though so that’s on my next must do list especially the macron gelato sandwich! :dogdance:

So my picky child has refused to work with me on dining choices due to it being overwhelming. She likes to look over my shoulder occasionally so I usually have a few picture up(she is very visual) to say hey does that look good? I have about 3.2 seconds about 2x a week. Well I just happened to be reading about your LTT meal when she came over. She loved what she saw and this is the first meal other than the character parts of others, she is really excited about. The history, the decor, the food. all a huge hit. I am sorry it was not a good meal for your son. You are a great mom and we all see the great care you put into all the planning to give the best for you and your son to really enjoy your time.

You look fantastic, Lisa. I love the photo of you and kiddo in front of the Figment topiary—your shirts, the flowers, the coloring—perfection!

The food at LTT looks excellent, and I think the price sounds good. You are a caring and classy person for tipping extra to cover the difference between adult and child meals. I hope it brings you good karma. :)

Okay, I'm a bad friend for being WICKED late, but I'm here! :rolleyes1

My thoughts:
-The Demon Figment is still hilarious
-I am somewhat ashamed of how much I enjoy kale lately (does this mean I'm becoming a hipster?!?), but your salad at Satu'li looks DELISH
-THAT PICTURE OF G AS BEN FRANKLIN IS EVERYTHING! I'M DYING!! :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
-I may not ever recover from that horrible Garden Grill dinner. I think it was a combo of us just having had Thanksgiving dinner a week before, and also the pink turkey grossing me out. Your breakfast looks amazing though.
-We felt the same way about CA Grill and Le Cellier. CA Grill was AMAZING..and Le Cellier, while good, was like a step below that. I'm not rushing back there and would rather spend the money on CG.
-The menu at LTT hasn't ever appealed to me because I make pot roast all the time, and it just seems like New England-themed food. But holy crap that dessert looks like an amazingly delicious way to bring on the diabeetus.

I make a shrimp dish with creole seasoning, onion, tomato and green beans
Umm... Can I get the recipe? Ethan LOVES shrimp any way he can get it but I am not creative in the kitchen so I tend to stick to just a few different ways of prepping each protein. We get so bored with our dinners. This sounds like it'd be right up our alley and a great addition to our rotation.

I loved the ice cream at L'Artisan des Glaces. I just had a scoop of chocolate in a waffle cone and it was so rich and creamy.

Officially booked our August trip! I'm booked at Pop the 17th-26th. I may end up dropping friday and possibly even saturday later on though. I'm still hunting for a decent price on our flights.

Loving your report. My typical ds13 also has some pretty serious food/texture issues. And call me crazy, but I love that your from New England. We are in RI

The kid was really looking forward to it too, because he played Ben Franklin in his school's "revolutionary wax museum" where the kids were all "wax figures" that came to life to talk about their life and times. He was so stinking cute too, just have to embarrass him for life and share:

Aw so cute!

I know @kastoney will completely disagree with me here, but I LOVED the iceberg in this.

I like iceburg too :rotfl:

The waitress brought it and set it down with two spoons "to share with mommy." Kid took one bite and his eyes rolled into the back of his head... then he took a second bite and the waterworks started. "Mom, it's SOO good and I HAVE NO APPETITE! THIS IS THE THING I LOOKED FORWARD TO MOST IN THE WHOLE TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!"

Aw, that's so sad. :sad1: I sometimes overestimate how much I'll eat on trips, and it's so sad when you want something but you just can't eat it!

you are lucky. I have had to learn to make my own indian, greek, mexican because there is nothing good here... we have decent thai but the chinese is not good. I don't have a hot enough flame to do any real wok cooking. Sucky rental, boo. We can get good baked goods here (not french specifically) but it's not really my thing so Id on't much care :) And NOTHING delivers!!!

Aw, that's great! We really did enjoy our meal there (kid did too in spite of waterworks at the end). the food was really tasty and wondering if the pork was so overseasoned because it was an end piece, if the meat part where thicker it might have been just right. But it was kind of more like a rib than a chop. We do plan a lot but then sometimes I miss something. We survived and overcame!!!!! lol. Glad your daughter has something to get excited about. My kid is very visual too, that's why he loves the vlogs and reviews with photos.

thanks. I feel good most days. Sometimes I feel fatter than before. It's a really weird head game and I think the mental/emotional adjustment period is much longer and more difficult than anyone talks about.

I really liked that picture except for creepy figment and the flash making the wash on my jeans look like I wet myself in fear, lol. I wonder if I can adjust that in a photoshop like program.

I'm kind of a chronic overtipper in general. I deal with people all day and I could NEVER do that job and am extremely appreciative of those who do do it. It's tough. If I'm leaving a small tip you really messed up, lol. I also feel like a couple extra $$ does more good in a tip than in my wallet, where it will likely be squandered away on nonsense.

Okay, I'm a bad friend for being WICKED late, but I'm here! :rolleyes1

you're just awful, lol. You must come and publicly adore me if you're gonna be my friend!

I am way too old to be a hipster but yeah, raw baby kale has been appearing more and more in my salads lately. Who am I? I still don't care for the mature version cooked though, but will eat the babies!

He really has a flair for the dramatic. Next year I'm going to be a theater mom. he is working really hard on accepting he will likely have a bit part as the youngest class who can participate, lol. He wants to be the lead right off the bat.

I think the pink turkey alone is enough :crazy2: rare poultry is not a thing!

I never make pot roast but admit I have looked for a LTT copycat recipe on the web. The atmosphere is great and they have some good sounding apps too (those corn fritters sound soooo good) and they have a better than counter service burger, salads, and pasta... so you don't have to get the pot roast to experience LTT! and if you read reviews here, ooey gooey toffee cake makes the whole trip worth it! I would agree!

I sort of cook by eye but I peel a 2 lb bag of ez peel raw shrimp then throw it in a ziploc with creole seasoning to taste (I use a local blend, some can be quite salty and/or spicy so maybe go easy at first and you can add more).
then I cut 1 package (i think 12oz) green beans into 1 1/2 or so pieces. I put a large (12" diameter) nonstick pan with a lid (can use foil in a pinch) and put in the green beans and about 1/2" water and put the lid on and steam them for about 5 minutes (i don't time, sometimes less sometimes more) and then put them into a colandar sitting in a bowl of water and ice to shock them and stop the cooking. Then I add some olive oil to my pan and add 1 onion diced fine and cook until it starts to get translucent (and often I am inattentive and it will brown a bit, it's better if not but no biggie if it does). When the onion is translucent I dump in the shrimp and about half a package of grape tomatoes that I've cut in half (I do that while the onion is cooking which is why I sometimes overcook it, lol) and when the shrimp are just mostly opaque but not 100% opaque I return the green beans to the pan to heat through. When it's all cooked I add in a tablespoon of butter and a slosh of half and half, and serve over brown rice. It's not as good without the rice, lol.

I post SO much food porn to FB and I was sure I had a picture but I couldn't find it...but then went back to google photos and found one, lol. I only had to go back a year! haha. But this is what it looks like. BF can't get enough of it but it's just not as good without rice for some weird reason, throws the whole balance off, and now he is doing the low carb thing too. 20170226_193610.jpg

I wish I could squeeze in another trip with my APs. Last week of august would be great. I just don't think I have the PTO and the flights are so pricey :( kiddo does not go back to school until after labor day.

You know what? since dealing with my own child and seeing the utter torture he goes through to try to eat things to please me, I have nothing but sympathy for anyone who has food issues regardless of the reason. I think in general we should be respectful of that. There is a difference between a child who would rather eat junk than veggies and a child who can't tolerate certain things (spectrum or not!) Hell I'd rather eat ice cream than veggies and that balance is a learned thing. My child cannot tolerate veggies but I have hope someday he will, especially now with the help of experts I have stopped riding him about it... I was "old school" for a while and we had many food battles until the experts were like "nonono it doesn't work that way." It took me a year to undo the trauma I inflicted with a 1 week battle over beef stew, the kid could not tolerate it and I could not tolerate him not tolerating it and it became a battle of wills, He didn't eat dinner for a week. NOW we are very low key... try it if you want, don't if you don't want to. If it gets to the point where it's on your plate and all but in your mouth and you want to back out, that's FINE. So now in his own time he will eat pot roast or brisket with gravy... in his own time. And I think he'll get to the rest in his own time IF I don't traumatize him about it!

I fly out of PVD any chance I can get. Logan too stressful!

Aw so cute!
I like iceburg too :rotfl:
Aw, that's so sad. :sad1: I sometimes overestimate how much I'll eat on trips, and it's so sad when you want something but you just can't eat it!

I have it so rarely because it's so "out" that it's a treat, lol. It's just so good when it's cold and crunchy!

Yeah I think we all do but this was definitely med driven. He did a lot of "I'm too full for dessert" after it had been ordered. I don't fuss about that at ALL as I think "stopping when you're full" is the thing to encourage rather than cleaning your plate. I do wish he'd be a bit more self aware in what he orders/takes/serves himself whatever, but we are working on it.

I just wanted to say I have always enjoyed your dining reviews-I thought you were fair but honest. And the two of you are such great travel companions! I am really enjoying these because I get the impression that although you’re eating less, you’re enjoying it more?
Anyway, congratulations on your weight loss! You look fabulous!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! That looks delicious and is definitely something both of us will enjoy. I've got a bag of shrimp in the freezer and Tony's creole seasoning in the spice cabinet so I'll be putting grape tomatoes and fresh green beans on my shopping list so we can have it this weekend. It also is simple enough that I can have Ethan cook it with my supervision a few times then let him loose. I'm huge on teaching him independence in the kitchen because there are so many days that I'm just done adulating by the time dinner rolls around and cereal and ramen is just not a well balanced diet. HAHA

I do wish he'd be a bit more self aware in what he orders/takes/serves himself whatever, but we are working on it.
I don't know if it's a boy thing or the age, but we have the same struggle. I promise you it's not related to the spectrum and/or his meds. E thinks "hey, I'm a growing boy, I need to eat like a horse" then once he actually starts eating he realizes that his stomach does not have the same capacity as a horse's and is actually only the size of his fist. It's a battle in restaurants and when snacking at home but I still serve up his dinner every day. He knows he can always go back for a second helping but rarely does

Oh, and I hear you on flight costs. Flying from Seattle to MCO is crazy. I've been stalking and the lowest I've found for my May trip is $400rt and our August trip is even more per person. I keep hoping they drop but It's really not looking like that will happen.

Thanks, I am known as "tough, but fair" lol.

Yeah, the weird thing is I do enjoy food even more than before. I asked the surgeon about that like... that seems like a bad thing, right? he said nooooooo, you're slowing down and savoring and it's great that you enjoy it! So I will just be happy that I'm not one of those people who have foods that make them violently ill or for whom nothing tastes good after they have the surgery. I'm happy to have the responsibility to make good choices and portion control if it means that when I'm on vacation I can eat what I want and make up for it with activity. I actually ended up losing 3 lbs on vacation after the water weight went away so that was a nice surprise! Makes me feel like this is very livable for me. My surgeon advocates an 80/20 lifestyle - 80% of the time eat healthy, make good choices, weigh and measure, plan ahead. Then on vacation, have dessert. Have a piece of cake on your birthday. have a drink on NYE. keep on top of the weight and if you're up a couple of pounds, buckle down again. Seems very sensible to me and honestly I'm very happy that it worked out that way! It was a little tough getting back to my regular routine when I got home but I think because my body was used to eating 6-7x a day and I had to basically just not do that until I was readjusted to only eating 4x (i eat 3 meals and a 3pm snack). But once it adjusted I've been on autopilot in my regular routine. This was my first time deviating so much from my typical routine and it was good that 1) I could 2) there were no dire consequences due to increased activity and 3) I was able to transition back to reality and not have it be a month long free for all.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! That looks delicious and is definitely something both of us will enjoy. oh I didn't think that particular thing was. We ordered that 'Ohana bread pudding and he ate 3 bites and was full. I'm like, how could you be that close to being full and be "hungry"? lol Just drives me nuts when I spend the money on something and he doesn't really want it. At home I portion out for him so it's good.

I should be a little more trustful of G in the kitchen. He is interested but he is also "meds out of system" by that time and ability to focus is tough. Maybe I will let him help me make his dinner tonight, we'll see, lol.

oh I bet it is. our flight is not that long and I paid about $500 last time for both. I guess I shouldn't whine. It does make it easier that it's just the two of us and not 4-6 people though!

Maybe start having him help make breakfast and/or lunches on the weekend. That's what Ethan started learning a few years ago. We started super simple with stuff like scrambled eggs, pancakes, ramen noodles with me hovering the entire time. We are now at the point that he can make those with zero supervision. He does homemade mac & cheese in my electric pressure cooker with me shouting instructions from the other room, and can make simple dinners on his own or with minimal help, including baked fish, spaghetti, shrimp scampi. There are other things he has made after I've done some prep-work because I'm still not comfortable with him using sharp knives much but a couple months ago he was home from school and he got a ham dinner prepped and cooking all while I was at work. He only called me for clarification ONCE! I was so proud and it was amazing coming home to dinner ready to pull out of the oven.

Between the cost and it taking an entire day to fly there I've been tempted to make the big move cross country just to be closer to FL. The only thing stopping me is that I don't think I could ever be happy living so far from my family.

I might have to stop saying I'm not really a dessert person because this thing was... AMAZING! It was small (only about 4" in diameter at most, much much much smaller than the Tamu Tamu ice cream cookie sandwich) and expensive ($4.69, I think only a dollar less than the huge cookie sandwich at Tamu Tamu) but it was nirvana. The cookies were perfect macaron consistency with that crispy top and the chewy inside and the ice cream was SO FUDGY DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM OMG OMG OMG. I love chocolate ice cream but rarely is it as deeply darkly chocolate as this
So glad to hear you enjoyed this! I'm not much of a dessert person either but we tried this a few years back with salted caramel ice cream. Unfortunately it tasted completely burnt so we couldn't even finish it. All of that said, you clearly are the better orderer !

What a great picture of you 2!

my child was perplexed but I broke off a piece of pretzel bread and dipped it in the soup and ate it and he followed suit. Now we tried this before at biergarten with their pretzel bread and cheese soup...
The is brilliant. how smart to order the kids soup and then just dunk the bread in it. I'm a bit embarrassed to say I've never even tried the soup. I wanted to at food and wine but the line was always too insane.

He really liked this mac and cheese.. I have read that the pasta is mushy and while I will say it was not al dente (I tried a piece... for the review of course) it was not mushy either. There was nothing that fancy or complex about the cheese sauce, and he enjoyed the crunchy contrast of the bread crumbs. He tucked into this while waiting for our steak to come back and to give him something to do besides fret over his anticipated filet mignon lunch being ruined.
This looks so good! Who needs fancy or complex then you have cheesey perfection!

It was good but not AMAZING and not as good as before with lots of rich truffle butter sauce and earthy mushrooms and creamy risotto. In fact I'm not sure I could detect any of that lovely earthiness that truffle flavor imparts.
Glad they finally got the steak right for you, but when they have a dish everyone loves I have no idea why they feel the need to muck with it.

Anyway the kid ordered a VEB (very expensive bagel)
:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Now no one hate me, but I am not a fan of the dole whip. I think it tastes kind of chemically to me. And the kid is not a huge fan of citrus in general so I pretty much gave it a 0% chance he was gonna like it
Nope sorry, gonna have to hate you :P

he kid was really looking forward to it too, because he played Ben Franklin in his school's "revolutionary wax museum" where the kids were all "wax figures" that came to life to talk about their life and times. He was so stinking cute too, just have to embarrass him for life and share:

He is perfect!

I was thinking "omg I can NOT take this anymore, this kid needs a chill pill and if I start now 12 hours from now will get me close enough to park close, by which time he will be too tired to be doing the stuff he's doing now."
Wow, you certainly have a lot to juggle and think about but its evident what a great job you do.

I know @kastoney will completely disagree with me here, but I LOVED the iceberg in this. Maybe it's because iceberg is kind of taboo in salad now, sort of the "junk food" of salad, with little to no nutritional value. But this salad was ice cold, perfectly dry, perfectly CRISPY, perfectly dressed
Your salad definitely looks different than mine! I wouldn't have cared if mine had iceberg in it, but unfortunately it was billed as "mixed greens' but it was 99.9% iceberg.

I think this is actually a pretty generous serving for a kid's meal. it's a full big scoop of mashed potatoes, a decent serving of pot roast and a decent serving of green beans. The pot roast was KILLER.
What a great idea to get the kids pot roast. Gonna have to steal this!

Oh no poor guy. Sounds like the server handled it well though.

Holy Mother Lisa. I made your creole shrimp for dinner. This. Is. Delicious. I had leave out the onion becabec the one I had was bad and totally spaced the butter and cream step but it's so super yummy. I even let Ethan cut the tomatoes

OMG that photo is gigantic. Sorry!

lol, I am good at fattening things up. But a little butter and dairy does make a lovely sauce over the rice! Glad you liked it. This was a "clean out the fridge night" result!

Well it's been an eventful few days with my annual girl's weekend and Jury Duty today (and I actually got selected for a case! and we wrapped it up before lunch, lol) but it's time for more food reviews!

Day 3: Be our Guest Dinner!!!

So, sad but true, I've never even set foot in Be our Guest. Last trip we had one evening where I was on the fence about a 3:45 'Ohana or 4pm BoG before the christmas party and I chose 'Ohana. The picky kid has been for lunch with dad but it was a disaster. Dad & family made him order off the kid menu and he grudgingly tried the Turkey meatloaf but there are bits in it so he was not a fan. He eats meatloaf at home but I use Ina Garten's turkey meatloaf recipe and puree the aromatics so there is no textural issue... and I would have known that was gonna be a miss but Dad didn't. Also, Dad had no idea about preordering so they waited in a HUGE line to order and then their order got lost and it was 45 minutes after sitting down before it got resolved. They got a free meal and a couple of FP+ for their trouble but the whole thing did not leave kiddo with a good impression.

I finally convinced him to give it another try for dinner because dinner is a table service and we checked out the menu and there were several options, so he was ok with it. I made another early adr, 4:30 and we checked in pretty early - around 4pm. The check in process is REALLY confusing for people who haven't been there before. We blew right past the check in desk, didn't even notice it and finally asked a CM by the door what to do and then had to go back. It was not very busy that time of day so I think part of why we missed it is that the hellacious line that was there when we left was nonexistent when we got there. But anyway we finally figured it out and got checked in and the kid requested the West Wing. I'm standing there all like :confused3 but he knew what he wanted and was asking for it so I went along with it.

So after checking in the right way we walked into the waiting area and sat on a rock. I took a photo of the mosaic outside because I :lovestruc mosaics. Apparently, I also :lovestruc smilies tonight too.

20180224_160928.jpg

It was not much time at all before we were called and brought to our table. The greeter/seater person explained a bit about the castle and the various rooms and explained that we could explore the castle if we wanted and that we'd be seated in the west wing. Which was DARK. Which is ok, I actually didn't mind, but at first I couldn't see ANYTHING coming in from the blinding Florida sun. I was wary when I sat down because I could barely see a thing, but as soon as my dang pupils opened up a bit it was actually kind of nice. The seater also warned us that there is a lot of noise when the last petal falls but I didn't really notice anything, I wonder if it was working? or I was too buzzed. Not sure which but it did not bother the kid one bit.

A review of BoG dinner is not a review of BoG dinner without a picture of the napkins folded like a rose. It's a nice touch and their signature thing, so here you go.

20180224_161638.jpg

Kind of a crazy angle but at this point I could barely see what I was photographing still, lol.

Anyway the waitress came by to take our drink orders. The kid got an apple juice and I decided I really Really REALLY wanted a glass of wine... so I went to order the reisling. She let me know that it was not sweet AT ALL and I haven't had wine in so long, I really wanted something sweet and easy (kind of like me, lol) so I backed off and she suggested the moscato instead. So I didn't even see it on the menu, maybe because it was so dark, but I found it online so here it is:

Terra d'Oro Moscato, California
Opens with elegant bouquet of honeysuckle, orange blossom, litchi, and nectarine. Sweet finish of apricots and rose petals

here is a picture. fair warning: it looks like wine, in the dark, with a candle behind it.

20180224_162223.jpg

One of the "things" that you may not know is that you can't eat and drink together once you've had surgery like this. My surgeon's rules is you can drink 15 minutes before or a half hour after eating. Some doctor's guidelines are much longer. A sip or two won't kill me but more than a tiny sip or two and it actually creates a lot of pressure and hurts. I will only take a sip of water swished around my mouth if I just ate something very salty but in general I don't eat and drink. That rule makes having a glass of wine with dinner problematic, so I really wasn't sure how I was going to handle this whole thing but I ordered the damn wine anyway.

Anyway it was nice, and light, and a little sweet and fruity and I couldn't tell you about honeysuckles or litchi and it certainly did not finish with the flavor of "rose petals"... which I STILL remember from childhood (my neighbor had a rose garden and NO they did not taste nearly as good as they looked, I learned that the hard way... in fact they are absolutely revolting, so who the heck would want a wine to finish tasting like that!?! :crazy2: But hey, I'm not a wine expert either)... but I liked it a lot, and what I ended up doing was drinking about half of this while waiting for my meal. It probably was not a full 15 minutes before my meal came but it was enough that I experienced no discomfort and a light buzz on the empty stomach.

Also with the drinks came the bread and it was right up the kid's alley. I just had a teeny bite to taste it since I had my wine, but the kid loved it - nice crusty, chewy warm rolls with butter... pretty much a win all around.

20180224_162425.jpg

At that point we placed our meal order and decided to take that opportunity to walk around the West Wing a bit. The level of detail is truly astounding. The rose was really pretty and we took a selfie with it:

20180224_162017.jpg

The other thing I agonized about in advance was whether to get the kid's steak or the adult steak for the kid at like 3x the price when you account for dessert and beverage. Luckily a friend had experience with the kid steak and said it was a decent portion and they had no problem subbing the fries, so we had a talk and he told me he was ok with the kid's steak... we also had the dessert party planned for later so I was PRETTY sure he wasn't going to actually starve or anything, especially not with 4 rolls in his belly (yes the picture was after he had tucked into 1 and he ate all of them! I normally put the brakes on but... was buzzed and didn't care.)

So the kid ordered:

Kids' Mickey Check Meal - Grilled Steak
with Seasonal Vegetables and Fruit Cup. Choice of Small Lowfat Milk or Small Dasani® Water. Meets Disney Nutrition Guidelines for Complete Meals without substitution

As you know (or should know) the sides, desserts and beverages are just suggestions to meet the mickey check guidelines... but they will in reality sub anything you want as far as sides, beverages and any kid dessert (which at BoG is the same as the adult desserts). So the kid wanted the fries, and here is what came to the table:

20180224_163320.jpg

He doesn't eat condiments (but does eat some sauces) so I removed the offending containers from the plate and then spread the steak a bit so that anyone who was wondering as I was just how big the portion is could see it. Here is another picture:

20180224_163345.jpg

Portion-wise, I'd say with my mad guestimating skillz that this is between a 4-5 oz portion of steak and from what I saw going by, it was the same as the adult portion of fries. Also. The steak was actually tenderloin. It was two thin (maybe like 3/4" at most) steaks but definitely tenderloin. I've always speculated that the kid's nonspecified "steak" is whatever is leftover from butchering other cuts for adult meals. At Coral Reef I was pretty sure his chunks of steak were tenderloin tips. But this was for sure the small end of the tenderloin cut into small slices. It cut easily with a butter knife and the kid was once again in HEAVEN. I didn't take a bite but it was cooked perfectly, a true medium (a bit more done than the other "medium" steaks he'd had but I'm guessing because they were thinner). The fries were good, I tried a couple. The kid gave this two enthusiastic thumbs up.

I ordered the mussels appetizer:

Marseilles-style Mussels
Steamed in a Smoked Tomato and Saffron Broth served with a Garlic Crostini

And here is what I got:

20180224_163603.jpg

If you'll see in the middle there is something that looks like onion, but it's actually FENNEL. I do NOT like fennel. like, at all. I mean, I tolerate it a bit in sausage... but I basically do not like a licorice taste at all. I don't like tarragon either for that reason. Luckily, fresh fennel does not have as strong a flavor as the seed and I was able to just push it aside, the broth was not infused with it... it was just kind of sitting there, so no big deal.

The broth was absolutely delicious, smoky tomato like the description said. I used a mussel shell to pull another mussel out, drop it in the broth, then used a spoon to eat a spoonful of broth with the mussel. It was sooooooo good, I really enjoyed it.... until I realized that there was a little vat of garlic aioli sitting there and remembered back when we lived in Maryland and I was doing a project in Baltimore and we used to go to Bertha's Mussels that they had an aioli sauce one time we were there that was sooooo good with mussels.

O
M
G

talk about being kicked up a notch, mussels dipped first in smokey tomato broth and then in garlicy aioli. Holy cow this was delicious. and Decadent. and definitely turning an otherwise fairly lean protein into something not so healthy. But OMG it was good. seriously if you get the mussels, consider getting some of that french fry dip for it. I had a fry dipped it in but it was better with the mussels. Now i want to get mussels and make a smoky tomato broth and some aioli. SO GOOD!

The crostini were just ok, mostly a vehicle for dipping into the broth. I may have eaten half of one, the kid tried one but preferred the bread.

We had decided not to get dessert but I didn't realize that unlike many other kid meals, the BoG kid meals get a "regular" dessert. I guess because they are all basically cupcakes and then the grey stuff thing, which does kind of resemble a real dessert. This thing changes a lot it seems but this is what it looked like when we were there (the description on the website does not match this so I won't c&p it):

20180224_170743.jpg

The waitress brought this but only one spoon (bad waitress! not a good way to impress the tip giver right before the check!) but the kiddo let me try with his spoon. It took a while for it to come but the kid actually did not get antsy waiting because he had a fully belly so the timing worked out ok... I wonder if most people get up and walk around the castle between dinner and dessert and that's why it took so long.

I was starting to worry if maybe having the surgery turned on my sweet tooth since every other dessert I had was SOOO good but this was just meh and I was relieved, thinking the other sweet stuff I had that was so amazing were just a string of exceptional choices. It was some generic soft cookie type crust with some generic custard in it and the grey stuff just tasted "sweet" and like nothing else. The pearls were beautiful and crunchy and didn't taste bad but I could definitely live without this dessert. The kid, however, disagreed and dug right in and happily demolished this thing.

20180224_171055.jpg

By then I'd digested a bit too and I was able to sit and sip the rest of my wine, while the kiddo ate his dessert. Didn't 100% follow the rules but wasn't uncomfortable so we'll call it a win. By the end of the meal when I got back to my wine my buzz had worn off and sipping it on probably a half full stomach? didn't really seem to have the same effect as before dinner. This nice sweet fruity wine tasted great "with" the mussels... although I didn't have it truly WITH it, there was no clash or anything.

This meal was $43.83 after AP discount, tax and 20% tip. It was well worth it and we both really enjoyed it. The kid's meal in particular was a tremendous value between the perfectly cooked tenderloin, the adult portion of crispy fries, and the full sized adult dessert. I was really glad I had gone with it rather than the adult steak where he would have probably eaten the same amount of steak and the fries and I would have picked at the veggie, which from the look of them probably would have been more green beans with a flavor that was too green bean-y for me. This was not much more than LTT, or even that much more than a full CS for 2 (which cost me about $30) yet the kid had bread, tenderloin and a full dessert and I had a full meal and glass of wine and we were waited on by a decent enough waitress whose only fault was not bringing mommy a spoon to indulge in dessert. I would DEFINITELY do this again. except I won't be able to with the upcoming changes unless I pay for a lot of food I can't eat and ditto for the kid who will be a Disney adult. oh well :( Glad I got to try it once and we are thinking about doing breakfast there and splitting one adult entree... with the pastries it won't be bad and I'd pay the $25 for the both of us... kid can have pastries and bacon and some potatoes and the drink and I can have the eggs and some sausage and I just get the feeling breakfast might be more low key than lunch is, especially when it's PPO.

coming up next: HEA dessert party with plaza viewing.
