10 snubs and surprises from Oscar nomination morning

THE SNUBS AND SURPRISES OF THE 2014 OSCARS

Walt Disney is in the Academy Awards mix with the popular musical Frozen. Just not Walt Disney himself. A lack of Oscar love for Saving Mr. Banks was just one of many surprises that were apparent in Thursday morning's Academy Awards announcements. Here are 10 snubs and surprises worth noting in this year's Oscar-worthy crop:

'SAVING MR. BANKS'

Seemingly perfect Oscar fodder, the movie about the making of Mary Poppins was left off the best-picture list - which only had nine nominees and not the max 10. That was not very supercalifragilisticexpialidocious of them.

The Academy was just not feeling the Disney spirit with no love for 'Saving Mr. Banks'

Emma Thompson. The perennially acclaimed actress garnered a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Poppins scribe P.L. Travers, but no such luck at the Oscars — a bit of an upset but not too much of one since it's a strong category with favorite Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep.

Tom Hanks. How stacked was the list of best-actor possibilities? Hanks had not one but two chances — as Walt Disney himself in Saving Mr. Banks and the title hero of Captain Phillips — to make his way in, but was still shut out.

Monsters University. It doesn't happen often but Pixar was shut out of the category for best animated feature, which it has owned over the years. Instead of Sulley and Mike Wazowski repeating Oscar glory — the original Monsters Inc. won for best song in 2002 — Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki's final film The Wind Rises scored a nomination, as did the real surprise of the bunch, the Belgian-French film Ernest & Celestine.

And I watched American hustle last night, and that was an horrible movie, and it got
Nominated... What kind of people pick these ?

I am so disspointed Emma Thomson didn't get nominated. I thought she was fantastic.

I liked Saving Mr Banks, but I'm not sure it was Oscar worthy. It was good and I really enjoyed it, but I wouldn't watch it again. I also thought the acting was good, but not so much that it was for sure an Oscar contender. I do usually find though that Oscar movies don't always mean great. Beasts of the Southern Wild was an Oscar nominee and that was so bad I turned it off, something I don't do very often.

Maybe if in Monsters U there would have been a wild frat party with obvious drunkeness and drug use OR if Art was secretly a serial killer OR if in Mr Banks Emma and Tom had a heated sex scene OR if one of the Sherman boys was found to not only write delightful music but had a gambling problem THEN mayyyyybeeeee their would have been Oscar nods. Just my random thought :)

Never were truer words written...

I didn't think monsters u merited an Oscar nomination. IMO, it just wasn't very good.

Gotta agree with this. As a huge film geek, Pixar seems to be losing it's edge in the feature department. I'll actually put Tangled / Wreck-It Ralph / Frozen way above Cars 2 / Brave / Monsters U. What does that say ... Pixar may have the top CG artists, but they are starting to lag in the overall story experience.

Also, I thought American Hustle was great! ... but still 2nd fiddle to Wolf of Wall Street

It didn't help that it was a sequel well prequel. Did either toy story sequel get any nominations and they were far superior.

Saw Wolf of Wall Street last night. Very interesting movie.

Toy Story 3 won the best Animated award (personally I would have voted for How to Train Your Dragon that year). The much maligned Brave won it last year; I like Brave a lot more than most folks around here seem to but I think Wreck It Ralph was a better movie.

Monsters University wasn't good enough to consider not getting nominated to be a snub, IMHO. I haven't seen the two more obscure animated movies that were nominated this year but I do believe The Croods and Despicable Me 2 were better and Frozen was best among what I saw.

But the Academy never seems to agree with me, so take everything I say that with a grain of salt.

SO truth so true. It is all that is needed to get Oscar.
