The only Flynn Rider costume worth owning...is the one you make yourself.

If Disney had spent half the time coming up with some cool costumes for boys and sell them in the Disney store I would have bought one.

I have high standards. Costumes sold at Halloween outlets are almost universally poor, especially the ones for Disney characters.

TDS sells some really good costumes for princesses and I buy them. But for my 7 year old son, this is what they have:

  • Capt. Hook (bought it for last year's trip. It was good but now it's small and we don't really want a repeat)
  • Peter Pan (but can't find in his size and ... it's kind of a dress.)
  • Capt. Jack Sparrow (saw this years ago and it looked great, haven't seen in years)
  • Marvel Avengers and Spiderman (They seem okay but ... sorry... I don't see the Avengers as 'Disney')
  • Cars and Jake from the Neverland Pirates (They are really geared towards a younger crown)

We finally found a Disney Male lead in Flynn that was costumable and there was nothing worthwhile available. So I made my own. I would love to hear any constructive critisism. Pics show just the vest, the rest is easy enough to put together. I have a larger one made to fit me so we can go in matching costumes (complete with Pascal and his tongue). The lizard snaps onto the shoulder and can be removed.

The buckles are handmade from bronze. I took a few liberties with the vest design to simplify it and let me build it cooler. For example, Flynn's had a yoke cut for the shoulders where mine has shoulder seams but I think I conveyed the image pretty well.

Plus it will double as a Renn Fair costume pretty well.

That's great! I've lamented not being able to find good quality costumes for boys at the disney store too. My problem is, I have 0 talents as a seamstress. What really ticks me off is that the UK disney online store has a VERY nice Jake vest that looks really high quality and it's under $20 (I think it was like 12 pounds, ended up being like $18 US). But you look at the USA disney online store and it's more expensive and not as nice a quality. Though it is growing on me after seeing pics of kids in it.

I could probably cut the sleeves off something and hand sew to make a vest-like garment that would end up looking nothing like what I wanted. But that is probably about it. :sad1:

My only complaint is the pictures are too small! I like that Pascal can come off.

I think Disney is missing out on an opportunity with the boys. Kids like dressing up, even the boys.

I make dresses for my nieces. They like that they aren't scratchy.

Should be able to click the pictures.

The new line of princess dresses are much better in regards to scratchy. Last round of dresses had tulle on skin that was a pain. New ones are better.

Wife and I enjoy costuming and would make dresses if needed but the Disney stuff is at least 'just' good enough to not bother. For the boy... not a chance.
