The NHS, Fevers and Cruises...

Hi all,

I feel like i've been away for ages, i've really missed this board!!!!

Well my little fever turned out to be a very serious chest infection which required me to take advantage of the all inclusive plan on the NHS last Saturday. It was my first time at East Surrey hospital and I can't complain, everyone was brilliant and I didn't even have to wait in A&E (apparently if you have a fever of 102F and you've just had an allergic reaction to a drug and balloon up you get to go straight in LOL!) It was my lucky day! I hate hospitals and you always hear these awful things about the NHS but they were fantastic and made me feel so much better right away. The nurses especially were wonderful, I love nurses!!!

Needless to say, i'm better now and was even strong enough today to book our holiday for later on this year. It's DH's turn to pick and he wants a break from Disney It's a bit hard being in a mixed marriage! LOL!

DH wanted Caribbean so we're off on the 24th November! It will be our first cruise and it's all done and dusted as of this afternoon. And, if we can save enough before the trip we'll go to Las Vegas for a week afterwards!!! Again, never been so am really excited about it and would love to get tips from you seasoned travellers who have been before!

Anyway, that's my news. Hope you're all well

I had DD at East Surrey - I think my only complaint would have been that they were painting the ward whilst I was there The nurses were great

No, DH was adamant about a Disney free trip. Plus we got a great deal on an 8 night cruise through Thomas Cook (Royal Caribbean).

I am going to TRY very hard to convince DH that an overnight trip to Disneyland wouldn't go amiss (it's only 4 teeny weeny hours away from Vegas) but he says he needs a Disney break.

The man is virtually perfect except he only 'likes' Disney...

Eloise, RCL are a great cruise line, if theres anything specific you need to know please pm me, also Las Vegas is great, are you staying on the strip? make sure you get a really good look around as many hotels as poss, Disney Imagineers helped design most of them, that is why their theming is truly outstanding. like Disney on acid The Venetian is like a town in itself so make a lot of time for your gondola ride and ice cream in st marks square

A nurse myself I hate the media. I get so upset with the way the NHS is moaned about and all the media go on about all the bad things and people contracting diseases. Hey lets not appreciate and understand what we do. Due to the government we are short staffed and work very hard. All the media go on about is how bad we are, but they never ever print or televise when we have saved so many patients lives that day. Sorry rant over. I am so upset at the moment. All my family do is talk about how rubbish my hospital is and how bad the nhs is. If only they worked in a hospital and saw what we did they would understand. Sorrt rant definately over.

Wills, thats out of order. They should of closed the ward down. Especially with fumes for the lo.

Sorry for your health issues, but yey to Las Vegas. I have been to Vegas 2 times and am going again next year (along with a trip to DL). So my Vegas recomendations: 1) Take time to visit all the strip hotels, gamble a little (I just played the cheap slots!) at each casino (as a momento I collected a gambling cup from each hotel!), the theaming is just as amazing as Disney.
2) A Grand Canyon helicopter trip = so worth it, we do a different one every trip.
3) See a show: O is my favourite Cirque show, we also liked the one at Ballys.
4) Rides: If you like thrill rides (DH and I do), I recommend the rides at the top of the Strat, Speed at Sahara, Manhatten express as NYNY and my best thrill Indoor Skydiving!!!
5) Shopping: Aladdin (where there is a thunder storm in the mall every 30 mins!) Bellagio, Venetian, Cesears - serious designer!

So enjoy Vegas, I do!!!

Michelle, I , for one really applaud what you do, my friend is a nurse in Bristol and the hours and stress of work she does is unbelievable, she's in haematology and gets very close to her patients, many of them have serious leukaemia and very often die whilst in her care.
Also the work she had to do to get in was really hard, much more academic than many might think.
Although I don't applaud anyone who strikes I do feel that a few of those bigwigs in Parliament ought to get down off their high horses and hold the hand of a dying patient or wipe their sick or bottoms for a few days and then we'll see a better wage for you all.

Absolutely. The negativity from the media must be so demoralising for staff grouphug: for you Michelle) and yet thankfully they carry on caring and doing their job.

Thank you Carol. I enjoy my job. Its great to feel you have achieved something and seeing someone poorly and make a full recovery is wonderful. Like any job it has its negatives side, but in my opinion the positive makes up for it. My main ward is a 72 hour general medical ward, but I have occassionally worked on a haematology ward working with patients who have leukemia and other blood disorders. It can be upsetting, but the patients are lovely and so polite. I dont think I could work there permenantly. It would upset me too much. They are like a family on that ward. Its nice to see, but I would get too attached.

I too dont agree with the strikes. My personal opinion and only my opinion, please nobody flame me for saying this when you come into this industry do you really come into it for the money. Hell no I went into my chosen career to help people and to make a difference. I knew the pay would be bad and the chances of good pay rises to be prob non existance and more chance of Tony Blair turning into a women than that, but it doesnt really bother me. If anyone strikes I dont support them at all, infact they should be ashamed as they really are there to help the patients and if they go on strike then that means patients are not getting the care they deserve and that is not right. There are other ways to sort this out other than strike. If not choose another career. Oooops I bet I have put my foot in it. Sorry if this offends anyone. It was the general feeling from other nurses on my ward, they felt that nobody should strike and they wont participate in any if our hospital chooses to, which I dont think would. They have left it to the union. They also felt the same they are not in it for the money. You kind of known from the start the money isnt great.

As you say Jan it can be demoralising, but we all pat each other on the back and support each other. We know how it really works working on a ward and at least that is something.
