The new rides - what are the thrill levels?

Just because I don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned and you say drops are a no go, there is a drop in rise of the resistance. It’s not as intense as tower of terror of anything but it’s definitely thrilling when unexpected. We rode it last year with some kids friends that are very timid when it comes to rides, the 10 year old was scared at the time but extremely happy he did it, the 8 year old was inconsolable for about 20 mins lol.
oh....good to know. Thank you!

Disagree with comparing Slinky to 7DMT, and thinking it is less intense.

7DMT tracks are built into the hillside and scenery so there is never the feeling you are high off the ground, just on hills.

Slinky Dog has no scenery so the track is clearly high up in the air and I think that totally makes the thrill factor higher. IF she decides to ride, do not let her get in first. Have her sit on the right. Most of the banks going towards sideways are on the left so that seat looks down to the ground.

Very good tips. I love coasters but struggle with heights and 7DMT seems like a baby coaster to SDD to me since I can tell how high I am off the ground. And when I ride that with my kids, I sit on the right since I know what I'm in for. I also feel more exposed on SDD whereas the train for 7DMT is more enclosed so I feel better on my ride. Lame I know but can't help it.

One thing about riding SDD and 7DMT is that the trains are fairly long, so the ride experience is much more thrilling in the back. If you're concerned they might be too scary, ask to sit at or near the front. The difference is night and day.

Have her try 7DMT again this time, if she's not scared on that she should be good with SDD. Both my kids find SDD more scary than 7DMT, my son will ride 7DMT one time but won't get on SDD. My daughter loves both but says SDD is "scarier". Has she tried Big Thunder? If she has and is okay with it SDD should be just fine as Big Thunder is more intense IMO.

Rise has 1 drop but it's simulated into a launch video and it took my son 4 times to figure out we were dropping and not doing a simulated launch and he HATES drops (once he figured it out he wouldn't ride it again that trip lol).

This is a great thought. My one question would be - will they allow that? I feel like they just force you into the next row that's available?

She actually CAN do Thunder Mtn. And, true - it's been 6 years....she might be even better on 7DMT now. Very good idea!

OK thanks. If you can see a lot from the ground - she'll be able to judge herself.

:rotfl2:she would NEVER go on any of these....Guardians sounds like a definite no.
Guardians is WAY tamer than Space, EE, or RnRC.

I would also like to add STRONGLY that the best approach is to let her decide what she wants to ride. If she is prone to suggestive fear, then probably the worst thing you can do is to tell her in advance that a ride will be SCARY.

The BEST way to overcome fear is to give her as much control as possible. If she is 18, then she is very much old enough to sit out a ride on her own. A really solid approach would be to give her choices in the moment. Then contact each other by phone if you split up. Maybe pick a place to meet up before you ride?

Second, if it has been a few years, I'm not sure how to say, but she has had time to change. The same attractions might bother her the same, or they might not. I have years of experience working with teens. One day, they just make up thier minds they ARE going to do something and then they do it, evne though they would not do it the day before. I've seen it many times. A really key thing is THEY have to decide to do it. Fear is often about lack of control. It can also be planted by others, especially parents.

If possible encourage her to see the queue and preshows with everyone, then just use the chicken exit if she is scared to actually ride. (usually just before you board the actual vehicle.) Even then, if she opts out, she can use that time to do a quick alternative. Like maybe visit gift shop. Guardians has a very cool gift shop.

I ESPECIALLY encourage her to go through the queue and preshows for Guardians! They are probably WDW's best ever!

I HATE the suggestion of watching videos. People scream when they go on rides, and that often makes rides seem scarier than they are.

A good way to give her control though is to talk to CM's. They can provide her non-biased ride facts. Just a few specific facts will help her feel control. The ride is X minutes long. The top speed is 30miles per hour. Another option is for her to count during the most intense part of the ride. Knowing the 'intense' part is only X seconds long= more control. It gives her a tool for combatting the unknown, especially on re-rides. Closing her eyes is another option. (I know that one is obvious, but it can make a big difference).

Rise is mostly pretty tame. The drop is very small and very quick. Honestly, the ride is just so-so IMO. We have taken to skipping it when we go to HS, and saving ourselves the hassle of waiting for it/breakdowns. I agree Minnie/Mickey Train is a good pre-option.

Smugglers is an enclosed space, but not otherwise scary. If Star Tours makes her queasy, or enclosed spaces bother her than it could bother her, but otherwise it is just a game, and not a super one at that.
As others have said, she will be able to see Slinky before she rides. Personally, I think it is tamer than it looks. the track is elevated, but the dips/speed are pretty mild.

Rat is a lot like Minnie/Mickey Railway, but slightly tamer and WAY better. Both are pretty tame, but Railway is a little bit hurky-jerky.Rat is pretty smooth all the way through.

In part, she will only know for sure when she decides to try each one. Every person reacts differently. I have read on these boards of people who are fine with every ride except the Small World Dolls scare them.

Last, if she does enjoy or even tolerates any ride she was iffy about, often the VERY BEST thing is to re-ride it as soon as possible. We are all a little afraid the first time we ride a new attraction.

They allow it. We do it all the time, because we like to ride in the back. They might have to stand aside until the next train arrives, though.

Even though it's been a few years - we live in OH - the roller coaster capital of the world - she has definitely not gotten less afraid. lol. And it really is just drops and roller coasters - although that one Harry Potter ride at Universal - Escape from Gringotts - she wasn't a fan of. She totally makes her own decisions - like you said - she's 18 now. I just want some info on the rides you can't see....so, she can take the basic info as least and decide from there. She does usually wait in line with us and then exit the chicken exit. My other 2 miss the days when she would qualify as "child swap" and they'd get to ride back to back so mom and dad could both ride. :earboy2: My son asked if we could still do that this year - I was like "um....I think they know she can just wait for us by herself now.."

She was totally fine with Star Tours, so Smuggler should be fine.

I couldn't take it anymore - had to youtube Remy and Mickey/Minnie - those are totally doable for her!

Thanks again!!!!

She actually CAN do Thunder Mtn. And, true - it's been 6 years....she might be even better on 7DMT now. Very good idea!
Yes, if a rider is at all timid, they can request a certain row. Usually near front on most coasters (excluding being able to see from very front row).. We asked about Guardians and were told middle rows are considered tamest- so rows 5 and 6, but we didn't notice much difference. It is smoother than most coasters. Big Thunder and 7DMT are traditional coasters.

I know it's bad but I'm sitting here thinking... just put her on The Hulk. Yeah it's going to be the scariest ride she has or will likely ever do but after that every coaster at Disney will feel like you're riding the People Mover!
Hulk? Heck, Velocicoaster! I'm not afraid of any ride and that one gets me. I swear it is going to dump me out over the water every time
If you can ride Velocicoaster, I think you can ride anything in Orlando (for sure anything in Universal/Disney)

You can probably find clips of most Disney rides online someplace like YouTube. Then the person can get a sense of the actual ride is like. I wouldn't trick someone into believing a ride is tame/slow/calm if it really isn't. Likely they will never take your word on any other rides after that. Different people find ride experiences unique to them. Some get queasy on spinning rides or those with screens simulating motion while you remain stationary. While something may not affect you, it may impact someone else. I doubt that watching the pre-show changes any of that since it never gives you any indication of what the actual ride is like and you can't actually see the rest of the ride from the pre-show area.

GOG was much more intense than I was expecting, even after reading all about it. I was dizzy and disoriented the whole ride. I closed my eyes to get through it.

For the record, I'm good with all other WDW rides except TOT. I don't like the drops.

I know there are a lot of responses but here is my take...this last summer we were a group of 6 ranging in age from 4 to 69. The youngins...especially the 4 year old, are pretty ride adventurous. 2 out of 3 adults willing to try ALMOST anything with 2 out of 3 (not the same) dealing with motion sickness.

  • Rise-thrilling but more mentally than physically. Some spinning and quick movements but nothing super intense. Drop is small and so smooth you almost don't notice you've dropped. If visual stimulation is not a concern give this a go.
  • Smugglers-this is completely dependent on your pilots. Good pilots=fairly smooth super fun ride. Bad pilots=motion sickness potential with lots of "banging around." Plus side the vehicle is fully inclosed so no concern over feeling like you can really go anywhere.
  • SDD - more intense than 7dmt. Fully viewable from the outside so pretty easy to judge. If DD wants to try but is nervous sit in the middle of the train. Less intense than the back without the visual from the front.
  • Remys-good old fashioned wdw fun. Some spinning but nothing physically intense. A couple surprising visuals.
  • Guardian-no personal experience here.
