The Phillipines mainly lies on the Eurasion Plate, except for Northen Luzon which lies on the Phillipines Sea Plate. The plates have a destructive margin, which causes some earthquakes. But, there has only been one earthquake since 2000, which caused minimal damage. The area is prone to typhoons, averaging around 7 typhoons a year. It is the most common hazard in the area, often leading to flooding as well. There are 18 active volcanoes in the Phillipines. Mount Mayon has erupted 4 times since 2000 affecting thousands of people. Mount Bulusan erupted in 2007. The area is also prone to droughts and landslides, but they are rare, occuring about once every 3-4 years.

Now to write their management plans, then move onto California.

Much of the population is poor and live on the coast. This leaves them vulnerable to tsunamis and typhoons.To help those people, the Government have several organisations that give advanced warnings to several disasters,as well as educating the locals in how to react when faced with a disaster. These organisations include the National Disaster Co-ordinating Council, and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology & Seismology. Management plans such as Land-use planning and structural programmes of defences help people to survive the large array of hazards that affect the Phillipines.

Now to go onto California.

California lies on the North American plate. The Juan de Fuca plate moves sideways to the plate, causing a conservative plate magin. California is prone to earthquakes, mainly on the San Andreas fault, getting thousands a year, though most are too small to be felt. Only several hundred can be felt, and around 20 reach 4.0 or more on the Richter Scale. Flooding along rivers is more likely during El Niño years when winter storms are more frequent. The threat is increased by deforestation. Flooding along the coast, more likely along Long Beach which is a subsiding area, can happen during heavy storms. Droughts are frequent in La Niña years, especially in Southern California.Wildfires are a major hazard in Los Angeles, as the town expands into rural areas. The threat is increased during Santa Ana periods. Wildfires can lead to landslides during winter storms, as the hillsides are burnt and eroded.

The majority of the population in California are well earning people. A lot of the population live along the coast. To protect the people in the state, it has sophisticated management, such as a risk assessment for wildfire, studying satellite imagery, along with information on soil, slopes, vegetation and more, studied by The International Organisation for Standardisation. The Northern California Earthquake Management Centre provides rapid and accurate earthquake locations, and the magnitude of the earthquake.

Compared to the Philippines, California gets a less variety of hazards, which impact on the area less due to better management. The Philippines has a poor population, so the economical inpacts of a disaster is considerably less then in California. Locals in the Philippines are more prepared for a disaster then in California, but less people are affected in California due to buildings being more structurally sound.
