Sorry, I seem to keep posting too late.

Tinkaroo, can you tell us more about your private dinner or is it on the old thread? It sounds like a great idea. We did a private tea when they still did that and it is now a special memory for our family.

spacec47, the last time we dined at V&A was in January of 07 for our anniversary. We may do it for our next anniversary too if we end up being at WDW then which is the plan right now. But the menu changes all the time in some ways. There are various reviews on the Disney review forum if search is working. Have a great trip!:woohoo:

It's just there's always more mention of the Gasparilla's and 1900 than three great restaurants. Staying at the GF is hardly inexpensive so I always am surprised to read about RPC and Gaspies.:lmao: Not that there's anything wrong with that. We all decide where to spend our money.

LOL we are definately a family who loves RPC and does Gasparillas and 1900. RPC just makes everything too easy when traveling with young children and most times those two places to eat are easier on us when dining with the kids :rotfl:

We did get to enjoy Narcoossees by ourselves when grandma watched the kids and in fact we are going to eat there again this summer and will be bringing the kids this time.
We like to have at least one adult in our traveling party for each young child we have. :thumbsup2 That makes things much easier lol

Opps forgot to add that we have eaten at the GF Cafe and loved it. reat food and very relaxing!

Can I ask what the perks are for booking a club-level room, besides the food and itinerary planning? We will be driving to MK this August, and so I think we can buy our own snacks and drinks. Also, I'm anal and like to plan everything myself, so won't need any IPO assistance. The rooms are all the same size, correct, whether you book concierge or not? Are the views in the concierge rooms better than standard rooms? Are MK views guaranteed for concierge bookings?

Thanks!
Linda

I like making my own dining reservations too. The perks you've listed are pretty much it. You do check in at a desk if you arrive during hours of 7am to 10pm. At the GF a greeter meets you at the door or at least that was true the last time we stayed in SLC last May. i'm sure I'm forgetting something but you've got the main advantages.

The rooms and views are the same. Actually, the views from the end of Sago Cay and Conch Key are arguably better than any in RPC or SL. MK view is not guaranteed in RPC and not an option in SL.

Well, there you go...good reasons. Nice adult/child ratio, Mr. Mike!

The biggest perk for RPC (IMO) is being in the main building. Sugar Loaf is still an outer building. I do not believe MK views are guaranteed in RPC (can be requested) and Sugar Loaf wouldn't have a castle view at all based on its location.

HTH!

Wow! Those are some quick responses! Thanks so much!

So if I book a MK view at GS (not concierge), I would be guaranteed one of those awesome rooms in either Sago Cay or Conch Key? How is the walk to the main building from those buildings?

I think my main "wishes" for this stay are to have a fabulous view of MK and to have a nice and relaxing location for dh and me, but also to stay in a place that will be fun for the kids (ages 6 and 9). Convenience is also a main factor, which is why the debate is among only the monorail resorts, all rooms with MK views. To me, Poly seems to be packed with kids, and the CR does not appear to be as "interesting" of a theme. Still, it's a tough decision to make!

Linda

Make sure you list on your theme park view ressie that you wish for a castle view (not sure that is a problem at GF, but I think the Poly (?) has MK views that are of Space Mountain). From reading on the boards, most people seem to think the best MK view on property is at the CR (but we won't pay the fee for it when the GF GV rooms are $10 cheaper... I would pick the GF over the CR ANY DAY!!)

Good luck with your decision!

Tinkaroo, that's a shame that you had that experience at the Polynesian. I suspect it could happen at any WDW hotel though but that doesn't matter....the memory lingers.

Got to love those monorail restaurants, right?!

Both you and Kelly mention no fans in the bathrooms at the Polynesian. The bathrooms do have fan that are motion activated. I wonder if you both had rooms where they weren't operating properly. I actually like the single bathroom as it seems more sanitary for a hotel room that often has little kids staying if you get my drift. But a split bath is nice for makeup, etc..

Oh, we still do like the Poly! I think it has a lot of great things to offer - when just comparing the resorts, GF wins out for me, and the room layout has a lot to do with it. :thumbsup2 When my May trip originally included my DH (now it's my Mom), we were booked at the Poly!

We did have an unfortunate "other guest" experience (our neighbors - awful noise!), but that could definitely happen at any resort. I just wish management had done a bit more about it. Not to raise a debate, but they were international visitors, and I got the impression that they claimed to have a hard time understanding/communicating with hotel staff. :rolleyes1

I haven't posted in great detail about it - I keep meaning to do a trip report, but it just hasn't happened yet!

In a nutshell, I had wanted to do something as a special surprise for DH on our trip in December, and had heard about the private dining options around the resort. I wanted to schedule this for us for dinner one night, and had hoped to be able to do it outside somewhere (pending weather) so we could enjoy the fireworks.

It was a bit difficult to get in touch with the woman in PD I needed to speak with regarding setting this up - I never could figure out her schedule, but it seems she works a very limited # of p/t hours, yet she's responsible for so much. :confused3 I found once I was able to get an e-mail address for her, I had better luck reaching her that way (by phone w/o leaving a VM was darn near impossible). Long story short, we settled on the date, and I elected a time that coincided with Holiday Wishes (could have also done it to coincide with the earlier regular Wishes if I had wanted). I elected for the 3rd floor private balcony off the RPC lounge; I was told that area, the Grand One, and your guestroom are the only areas that PD will now set up an "intimate" dinner (i.e., includes your own butler, you customize the menu, etc.). I had been under the impression in the past that it might also include other areas around the GF grounds in the past, but maybe that got too complicated. We all know that private tea is no longer available. :sad1:

I can't remember what I was told initially the cost started at, but I know our meal ended up being $85/person, plus tax, 18% gratuity, and a $75 butler fee (alcohol was also at an extra charge). I think the final bill was a little over $300 - I tipped more than the 18% because our butler was WONDERFUL, and we did have some drinks as well.

Here was the final menu we settled on; I did run some ideas of things we liked/didn't like by the GF CM, and then she got with the chef to create the menu, and we refined from there.

- Crab Cakes with Mango Salsa
- Poached Pear Salad with Ruby Endive, Frisee and Mache. Hazelnut-White balsamic Vinaigrette and crumbled Stilton
- Petite Filet Mignon with Potato-chive croquette, Seasonal Vegetables and Red Wine Sauce accompanied by Butter-poached Lobster Tail for your husband and yours will be accompanied by Skewered Shrimp
(please let me know how you would like your meat prepared)

This includes a soda, water or ice tea, for each guest. Alcoholic beverages are additional.

During our "Wishes" fireworks we will serve a special dessert.

Fortunately, my husband doesn't ask many questions, so I didn't have to be purposely vague with him too much. Once we got to the GF (we were on the Wonder prior), he was asking what all we were going to be doing, and I just told him we were doing something special that one night, and he needed to wear "nice" clothes (not V&A nice, but I wanted to take pictures, and would have preferred we be dressed up). I didn't really have a big "reveal" planned, but told him that afternoon what we were doing. He was really excited, as apparently I had mentioned this idea once, and he actually remembered thinking it would be nice! :thumbsup2 We had a cocktail in the RPC lounge before we went downstairs to meet out butler, Joe, at the grand piano.

I had been worried that day, because the weather was NOT nice - very misty, humid, etc. (if you were in FL for the 1st day they were to have taped the Xmas Day parade last year, you'd know what I'm talking about). I had asked some of the concierge CM's to get in touch with PD for me that day to see what our options were if we couldn't be outside on the balcony. I was told they'd move us to the 5th floor in the RPC lounge, in front of the bank of windows that afforded a similar view to the 3rd floor balcony below. Of course, I was disappointed in the weather, but was glad there was an alternative planned. I even saw the set-up earlier that afternoon up on the 5th floor.

Imagine my surprise, when our butler led us to the 3rd floor balcony! Seems in the couple of hours since we'd been outside earlier, the weather had turned. It was cooler, not nearly as humid, and no futher chance of rain. Joe took it upon himself to move everything outside for us, although he was quick to say that he could put us back inside if we preferred. No, this was great! :thumbsup2

He got us all set-up with drinks and everything, and perfectly presented each course. He never "hovered", but always seemed to be on hand the moment we needed him (and he wasn't just inside at the window, so I don't know how he did it). He did set a little "prep" station off to the side with refills on sodas, Evian water, ice, etc. - he also took all of these beverages (plus my leftover food and our leftover dessert) to our room for us and placed in our refrigerator once our meal was over! We enjoyed visiting with Joe, too - talked to him about how long he'd worked at the GF (quite a while), where he was from originally, etc. I also have a pic with him - it was initially while DH was trying to find the right camera settings to best capture our pictures outside, but I'm glad we have it now. :goodvibes

It was a perfect meal, and as promised, our wonderful chocolate-y dessert came just in time for Holiday Wishes. Even though we could have stayed in our seats, we did go to the railing to see Wishes to its fullest, and then were amazed when to our right toward the end of Holiday Wishes, we began to see IllumiNations. It was a real treat! :cloud9:

All in all, it was a perfect, wonderful night, and one we won't soon forget. I'd pay to do it again in a heartbeat. Although the planning was a bit of a pain (there were some tense moments there at the end where I wasn't hearing back from the PD CM to finalize everything, and we were getting ready to get on the Wonder!), the execution was flawless.

Wow, that turned out a little longer than I was expecting! :upsidedow

HTH!

The main building is one of the things I meant also. When you are carrying 2 tired kids and the others don't even feel like walking, its great to get off that monorail and head straight to your room.

Also, have a baby who won't sleep or needs to be held? Great to head to the lounge and walk around that 3rd floor and listen to the music playing.

Sometimes we look forward to when they wil be older but then I feel guilty and know we'll say we wish they were little again.

Hello!
We'll be checking into the GF this Sunday and would love to know if all of the rooms have been renovated and have flat screen TV's?

If not, does anyone know what buildings have been renovated so I can make that request at check-in.
THANKS!

Have a great trip!

Tinkaroo, it sounds so lovely. Thanks for all the details!

Tinkaroo, Thank you for the private dining review. I am even more excited about my first stay in August. The GF staff , from reading here, seem like they go over to make their guests happy.

Hi Everyone- Well- I switched back to the Sugar Loaf today for our holiday trip...and I am not switching again!

Just wondering about the restaurants at the GF. I have eaten at 1900 Park Fare but none of the other restaurants. We want to stay close by the resort for our ADR's to save time etc.

Is GF Cafe good for lunch or dinner or both? I am really thinking about trying Narcoossee's while we are there. Is this a kid friendly restaurant? I was thinking of eating there on Christmas evening...what do you guys think??

Anyway- thanks again for all of your help. I love this thread and all the information I have found. I cannot wait to spend Christmas at the Grand!:santa:

I see you will arrive one day before we do and I am so jealous :thumbsup2 We at at the GF Cafe last year several times for all three meals and always had a good meal. My only complaint was at breakfast they seemed to be very slow with taking orders and getting coffee around but other than that we had no complaints. We tried Citricos last time as well and I was afraid we wouldn't like it and fell in love with it and are going back in May and plan on doing it again in December. Narcossees is fine and we are returning again but we just perfer Citricos over it. The CM's in concergie encouraged us to try Citricos and said we wouldn't be disapointed and so we ventured out and were glad we did.

We had our wedding rehearsal dinner for 20 at Narcoosee's...it was wonderful!

Then my new in laws missed our wedding at the Poly cause they were enjoying the RPC too much and lost track of time......
so the next day they took us to Citricos.....loved it there as well:)

We had 5 kids at Narcoosee's...considering we were there for nearly 4 hours....they were fabulous!!! They had their "own" table next to us.

We had breakfast at GF Cafe...I loved having a mimosa with breakfast...lovely views!

Gosh, I want to go back!

Hey everyone. Long, long time lurker, first time poster. We're bringing the 3 1/2 year old princess down to the GF in May. We booked a Garden View. What I've looked but I haven't found in this thread is what everyone's favorite building is for a Garden View room. Just looking for everyone's favorites. Thanks.

Welcome!!!

I love Conch Key since it is by the marina and a fireworks view is potentially on your balcony by looking to the right or by just walking outside. It is also on the other side of Sugar Loaf so very close to the main building and the quiet pool.

Kytiam,

I'm happy to report that I do have another postcard!:) Just need your mailing address and I'll send it out tomorrow. I'm sure it'll make your mom happy!:yay:
