Does anyone know if this is an legitimate organization? They want $75 lifetime membership fee.

That's funny. We got an invitation for DD to join the National Society of High School Scholars last week in the mail.

We got the one JanetRose got. DD got a letter, and we got the parents' letter. After looking it over, I really think it's mostly about money (but don't know for sure, of course :confused3 ). We aren't doing it.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is a legitimate honor society. They do a lot of community service activities and offer scholarships. My son has been a member at UGA for three years. Here's their website: http://www.nscs.org/

One of their benefits is a student health insurance plan. DS will be dropped from our coverage when he turns 22 in April, and he plans to go to graduate school in the fall. Although he's generally pretty healthy, we picked up the NSCS policy ($574 for 12 months) to make sure he's covered in case of an emergency.
