The MYW packages

I'm sure this has been beat to death, but here goes... Anyone compared the MYW with purchasing everything separately? I got a code I'll try to apply to my reservations for $59/night. I tried to get all the quotes myself but the system is down. We are looking at 2 value rooms, 5 nights, 6 days in parks, 3 adults, 1 junior, 1 child and 1 under 3. We plan to eat 2 meals out a day, mostly counter service. I always heard its cheaper to go separate, but just wondered if anyone knew for sure. Thanks!

I'm in the process of doing this now.

From what I looked at on Disney.com, the packages are NOT much higher than doing everything separately, unless you add the non-expiration to the ticket which I am NOT.

I priced a 6 night package in May, All Star Sports with a 7 day Park Hopper with the Pluses for 1 adult and 1 child for $1,203.74

then I figured it all separate and came up with $1,170.22 so I'm going with the package.

I'm sure I might be able to get the tickets from someplace other than Disney and save a little but it's not that much difference so I'm not worried about it, I'll book the package and not have to worry about getting tickets delivered in the mail, etc.

dturner, I am very new to this MYW stuff and just had a question:

If you actually have to pay more for the package why not just book room only and then purchase your tickets when you arrive? My concern with a package is that you have to put $200 deposit down (I think, I could be wrong) and then also isn't the cancellation period 45 days in advance of your holiday (Perhaps I'm wrong on this also)? With booking room only, isn't the cancellation period just 5 days in advance of holiday?

Please understand that I am not trying to be rude, its just that I have a very ill father and going with a vacation that is easily cancelled (booking room only, and buying tickets there) just makes the best sense for my family. But the more I read on DIS, it seems like a lot of people are booking room and tickets together (MYW package). Perhaps I am just missing something.

Again, not trying to be put down your booking practice, I just wish to understand why people are booking this way.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I haven't seen a package yet that would give you the same options for the same price or less than it would be for booking it yourself. Disney charges the rack rate for their rooms in the package and they charge their advance purchase price for the passes.

Even if codes for you dates do not come out and you have to pay the rack rate, you can still save money by purchasing your tickets from Ticketmania.com or MapleLeafTickets.com . Keep in mind that Disney.com doesn't tell you that they're going to add tax & shipping to the cost of their tickets. These brokers already include the tax in their prices. And Ticketmania will ship those tickets for free.

In your case, ebarj1098, the room rate will be discounted considerably. It would be well worth booking the parts separately. A value resort in June usually runs $99/night! You're looking at a 40% discount off of the cost of the rooms!

That is not always the case. WDW has been known to do some discounted packages. In fact we got one for Christmas 2003. We worked it out...our room was discounted to about $200/nt at YC. We couldn't have gotten a rate like that for Christmas. They may discount packages in the future....we just don't know yet.

Sorry, I was referring to the current MYW packages. There were some great packages in the past, including the 7-for-4 deal. But with the new tickets, Disney hasn't offered any kind of discount other than the AAA one. And that still doesn't beat booking it on your own with a AAA code for the room and buying the passes from another source.

Thank you for the Ticketmania tip, I'll check it out. I wasn't sure where you could get tickets other than WDW. As for my code, it was a PIN I got via email. Tried to apply it yesterday, they had to get a supervisor because it wasn't showing up, then found it, but at $74/night. Still a substantial savings as the rack rate I was going to pay was $111/night!

OK, another question about this. When you get the Magic Plus Pack or whatever, do you also get to park hop???

The "Magic Plus Pack" is just another name for the old Plus Options. The only difference is that they include DQ in the new "Magic Plus Pack". You would still have to add hopping on to your base tickets to be able to go from one theme park to another within the same day. That type of pass would be called a "MYW Premium" Pass. Disney charges $85.20 above the cost of your base ticket price to add the MYW Premium (pluses & hopping) to your ticket, regardless of the number of days of the ticket.
