The "my child is allowed to pick their nose" parent strikes again!

I swear a few years ago, a local radio station had this guy's mom on, he had died in a car accident because he was picking his nose, and he impaled his brain or some such nonsense....they were interviewing her and she said, "I always told him it was a bad habit, but I never thought it would kill him!"

I always feel so guilty when I laugh about it.

If this woman did not advocate nose picking I would say that she has a valid point about hand washing. The over use of anti bacterial soaps can create bacteria resistant strains. However, since she allows her child to dig for gold, its your classroom, your rules and your hand washing rule must stick for the health and hygeine of others.

We ask parents to bring in moisturizing liquid soap vs. antibacterial. It works just as well from what I have read and it doesn't create the bad strains. We do use clorox wipes on our tables and chairs though; hopefully that doesn't do the same thing.

I wonder if this child does it out of boredom or stress like a person might bite their nails or twirl/chew hair? Maybe it is a learned habit from mom and dad? Maybe he sees them do it all day? :confused3

That is what I was thinking..maybe OCD. Guess you'd better not bring THAT up with DNPM. (Darling nose pickers mom.)

I keep hoping the fact that he has to get up and go to the bathroom would make him stop! I'm not even subtle about it anymore, I'll just say his name and tell him to go. The other kids have noticed, but this doesn't stop him either.

Wouldn't the hand sanitizer be worse, or just as bad, as washing with soap as far as bacteria resistant strains are concerned?

Is "antibacterial" the same as anti "viral".

The kid could be developing a virus and all the gel in the world won't sanitize it.

This poor kid has a mother who is a flake and he is not going to know why people back away from him when he is older as he walks around with his finger hanging out of his nose.

Ewww!!!! I realize that kids will be kids and noses are very interesting places, but for a mother to say "My child is allowed to pick their nose" is just sick. Teach him to pick it at home, not in public.

No wonder our kids are such a bunch of screwballs....:sad2:

UGG! OP you MUST be counting down the days till school is over!

What the heck is wrong with that Mom?????????

If it makes you feel any better, I felt guilty when I laughed, too.

okay so i totally missed the orgianl thread onthis one...and op- im sorry this mom is giving you sucha hard time over this! good god has she not heard of h1n1??? ya know we were all scared to touch each other last year let alone picking boogers!!! lol

i have no advice, aside from stick to your guns, but omg i'm busting a gut here over what you guys are writing!!! some more food for thought- ewww whyd i say food? lol they say there are two types of people in the world...those that pick thier noses and those that lie about picking thier nose...just sayin' thats all. and in no way what im saying is that this kid or this mom is rite- the kid should learn boundries and be responsible for his actions...seems he'll need it with his mom!!!

how many more days till summer vacation?

But did Ember say she was using antibacterial soap?

Because I'm just not sure which would be worse; I avoid both hand sanitizers and antibacterial soap. Just normal soap for me, thanks (well, actually Trader Joes Tea Tree Oil soap, which actually does have natural antibacterial properties).

No she didn't say but I still think that it is a valid argument to not be so "clean" in order to allow the body to fight infections, germs, etc naturally. This mother can do that all she wants at home, but she's got to understand why that wouldn't be allowed in school, but apparently she doesn't or else Ember wouldn't be talking about it

Bacteria and viruses are two differnt things so I would assume its not the same, but they both may contain specific ingredients that are able to kill both.

Is the "I don't wipe noses/butts" teacher still around. (That was her tag, and periodically we'd get a "I had to quote my tag" thread.)

OK wait- I remember the original thread but I don't remember what happened. I know she sent you the screwy letter- did the principal end up getting involved?

You know - what the heck?!?!?

A parent defending her kid's nose picking??? :crazy2:

Weird, weird, weird.

It's not about being too clean - this kid is contaminating his fingers with mucous, and the teacher wants him to wash it off before he touches stuff in the classroom. The mom sent the hand sanitizer hoping to keep the teacher from sending him to wash with actual soap and water. No dice. Even if all the germs in the mucous are killed, whether viruses or bacteria, (and that's a big if) it's still GROSS! She doens't want mucous all over the classroom! Wash that stuff off!

As for the mom, I am totally baffled. If she really wants her kid to pick his nose, it should be at least be something done in private, like farting or scratching your privates. Not something anyone else should ever have to see!

Hopefully the kid will figure this out on his own sooner or later. :rolleyes1

How tragic...and embarrassing.

Exactly. I'm sitting here gagging. You'd think the mother would want her kid to knock it off if for no other reason than he's going to be made fun of for being so gross. I mean...IT'S SO GROSS!!! {{{shudder}}}

Yes I know that but there are people who believe in letting the body naturally handle that, meaning that whatever their child or others pick up from mucus contaminated hands is okay and not really a big deal. I said that she can do that all she wants at their home, but needs to understand why it can't be done in the classroom. :confused3

Oh, I see! :goodvibes

I thought you meant the OP was going overboard by making the kid wash his hands every time they were contaminated. :flower3:

I guess the mom thinks her kid's snot is so awesome, that all the kids in the classroom want a chance to eat it too.

(oh my gosh, that has to be the grossest thing I've ever posted!)
