The Monte Cristo....

Some of you guys know I'm open to giving the BB another chance and doing a review for the podcast on that chance - we just haven't had an opportunity yet, but to give you some background on why we think the BB is more hype than quality:

I try to normally see both sides of every coin, understand the workings behind a place and all, but I have not been back to the BB in 2 years, since our rude experience with waitstaff and bad value for the portions and quality of the food...

I am usually extremely lienient on Disney when it comes to restaurants (and we have eaten regulary at the Napa Rose since it opened, so we know standards of food quality and service.) That's when we went to the BB with another family - both of us had 2 yr olds - and we were all astounded. We had a coveted water table. The waiter made us feel like our kids weren't welcome in a Disney restaurant. Yep - in a theme park eatery. They were not too loud, just a little giggly, we were not loud as a group, no one complained, the waiter was just pretentious and snotty.

This was several months after they re-opened from the Pirates rennovation and they were trying to bill themselves as the flagship restaurant of the park. They cut the portion sizes, removed the lunch discounts, and made my friends and family feel unwelcome. That did it for me. No amount of atmosphere can make up for that. Maybe it was just our server, but the whole experience left a bad taste in our mouths that we didn't fully digest until after walking around for a while. I think we were just stunned how poorly it went, but couldn't place our fingers on the "why it happened" - we'd all never had anything but good service - and we had all been there together before it closed for rennovations.

Wow...kind of embarrassed about this, but I always finish my sandwich! LOL! And I'm 5'5 125 lb!!!!

lol!

Don't be embarrassed...I can finish mine too....and I wonder why I have 20 lbs to lose. LOL Not really...... :)

My friend ordered it once, it didnt have jam, it was like a ham and cheese that had been fried is how Id describe it. It did have powdered sugar though. We've taken my younger sister several times to the BB, she was 10 the youngest time. shell eat anything though.

The jam is on the side, it isn't really "jam" tho, it's more a raspberry sauce. mmmmmm

Nancy, I'm sorry you had such a yucky experience. Try it again....and let us know if they are better. :)

OH, I saw Big Daddy on the Food Network make these, they made my my mouth water!!

Monte Christo Sandwiches
Recipe courtesy Aaron McCargo Jr.

20 min Easy Yield 4 sandwiches

Ingredients

Sandwiches:
6 eggs
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
8 slices white bread
8 slices Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
1/2 pound ham, thinly sliced
1/2 pound turkey, thinly sliced
4 tablespoons butter
Cranberry Syrup:
1 (16-ounce) can cranberry sauce
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon salt
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, cream, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, and salt and set aside.

Lay the 8 slices of bread out on a flat surface. Lay 1 slice of cheese on each slice of bread. Then on 4 slices of the bread lay 1 slice of ham. On the other 4 slices lay 1 slice of turkey. Top all 8 slices with 1 slice of Swiss. Make 4 sandwiches and coat with egg mixture.

*Cook's Note: You may add more Swiss, turkey or ham, if desired

In a large skillet over medium-heat melt the butter.

Add the sandwiches to the pan and cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side.

Remove the sandwiches to a sheet pan and place in the oven. Bake until the cheese has melted and the sandwiches are warm throughout, about 5 minutes.

Cranberry Syrup:
In a large bowl, whisk all of the ingredients together until smooth.

Cut the sandwiches into quarters and serve with the cranberry syrup.

The Blue Bayou is a great place to eat if you like atmosphere. It is truly unique and it is a great experience.

My DH ADORES the Monte Cristo. We have eaten at the BB JUST for the Monte Cristo in the past. LOL Things have changed a bit in recent years and the Monte Cristo is no longer on the dinner menu at the BB, only on the lunch menu.

However, Cafe Orleans has the Monte Cristo on their menu as well, so you can get it there, too. They also have a 2nd MC on their menu, the 3-cheese monte cristo. :goodvibes

Drooling yet? hehe

Hope this helps,
Dreams

Thank you for letting us know about the three cheese MC....we are going in March and I will definitely be having this! I have had the MC at the BB and it was fabulous. (I didn't eat the jam...just seemed weird.)

Haha! You and I are those people who don't like mixing in sweets with the salty foods. I don't think I could stand the taste of sweet tangy jam on salty ham and cheese.
