Todays the big day. Im sad and happy all at the same time.
T and I wake up at 7:00am and finish packing all of our belongings. Todays the day we say goodbye to the Wilderness Lodge. I really enjoyed our stay here. Im just getting attached to it, and now I have to leave! Its just not fair! I compose myself and think about the day ahead. We are moving to Animal Kingdom though! That is exciting! We drag our stuff down to bell services to have our luggage delivered to the AKL. We then hike out to our car which is parked way yonder, remember? Its almost 8am already, we have to hurry, I tell T. We need to be at Discovery Cove by 9am to check in before the line gets too long. Im figuring there will be no lines for check-in at AKL this early. And I am right! We drive up to the AKL. I am in awe! Its beautiful! Its huge! That is one thick thatched roof! Its about 15 inches thick! We park the car ourselves, and check-in at the front desk. Now, I didnt tell you about this little secret that I should have told you in my pre-trip report. Im going to tell you now though, so it doesnt matter. Flashback: The night before we leave for our WDW vacation, T comes home from work and asks me if its alright if he upgrades us to a savannah view! Im totally confused. What do you mean? Of course its alright! What kind of a question is that? That would be too cool! Good he says, because its already done! Im just flabbergasted. He doesnt know anything about Disney. How did he even get their number? And the confirmation number? Im totally impressed that he did this all on his own! Wow! End Flashback.
We enter the huge lobby. Its fantastic! Yes, its dark, and its beautiful! We immediately go to the front desk(no lines) to check in. The CM greets us, but shes not really smiling. She goes through the motions of checking us in. She circles our room location on the map, and I panic because its at the very end of the hallway of Kudu trail, off on one of the wings with a Sunset Savannah view. It seems so far away from everything, and not a part of the main Savannah. T then asks her if theres any availability to upgrade to concierge for the last 2 nights of our stay. He thinks it might be a good idea since we may have a couple of relatives from the area visit us for a night. She checks for us, and yes, theres availability for Friday and Saturday night, Memorial Day weekend! And remember, we are asking her on a Tuesday of that week! Cost of upgrade to concierge: $312.20 for the two nights. Yikes! And this is at the AP rate! We also ask her about the Sunrise Safari that Saturday. I have my doubts since its only a few days away, and its Memorial Day weekend. I was right. She says she can put us on a waiting list, but we would be numbers 22 and 23. We put our names down anyway, you never know. She tells us that sometimes they will add one more bus if enough people sign up.
Even though its almost 8:30am, I tell T we should run up to the room just to check the view in case we dont like it. He agrees, but tells me Im worrying over nothing, hes sure its great. Well, I want to check anyway. On our way to the room we look out one of the windows in the hallways to see 3 giraffes grazing. Wow! Maybe this wont be so bad after all. We get to our room and open up the balcony. I see the people pen(the place where they herd people to in case of an evacuation so we can be safe from any fires AND animals) to the left of our room. This isnt good, I dont like it. I see an ostrich, and some miscellaneous birds(sorry, Im not a bird person). I tell T I want to go back downstairs to switch rooms. For an extra $80/night I want something better! T reminds me that were running late, and I should at least give the room a chance! Fine, but Im going to the front desk when we get back from Discovery Cove!
Its 8:45am now and we are running late! We run to our car that is parked far far away. And T floors it all the way to Discovery Cove. Yay! We get there at 9:10am and T drops me off at the front. There is a line of about 15 people, just beyond the front doors. T goes to park the car while I stand in line. I reach a check-in desk within 10 minutes and T is still somewhere parking the car. I check in for him and when he arrives we get our photo IDs made. Were assigned to Starfish Cabana and are to report there at 12:50pm, the earliest dolphin swim time they have available! Argh, I was hoping to get an earlier time in the morning, just in case there are afternoon thunderstorms. Oh well, it hasnt started raining before 5pm since weve been here. A nice employee gives us a quick tour of the area. She doesnt actually walk us around, but just points to all the different places. Your cabanas are over here your lunch will be served over there keep following this walkway to get to a restroom Why isnt she walking us? Wheres the Disney service? Oh I forgot, were at Seaworld! On our way to the lockers theres an employee with a two-toed sloth in his arms. Cute! I walk over and pet him(the sloth, not the employee). He is so cute! (again, the sloth, not the employee).
We head over to get our locker to put our stuff away, grab masks, snorkels, and life vests and jump into whatever body of water we are closest to. Theres a map of the whole park right next to us, but we dont bother looking at it. Were here for the whole day, were going to get to see everything for sure! We start snorkeling in this body of water, which feels good because the water is just the perfect temperature! Hmmm theres some sucken treasure over there some sort of gigantic vase. The water seems to be about 12 ft. deep and very clear. Where are all of the fish, I wonder? In fact, where are all of the people? Its deserted in here! We get bored of this creek and decide to get out after we make a full circle. We see a bunch of other people snorkeling in this other lagoon. I guess thats where all the fish are. Ok, this water is a bit colder than the creek, but we get used to it in a matter of minutes. Wow, when they said there are thousands of tropical fish here, they werent kidding! They are everywhere! We see beautifully colored fish as we are wading in 2 feet of water unbelievable! At some points it gets crowded in here, but what do you expect with thousands of fish and hundreds of people? Oh oh, looks like a traffic jam of fish and people up ahead, lets go the other way! Im always afraid of kicking other people when it gets too crowded. And why dont they hand out fins for us to wear? That would make this even better. Maybe I could have brought my own, oh well.
Its time to relax now so we get out and grab a couple of towels. The sand is so white and bright in the sun, its hurting my eyes! Better grab the sunglasses out of the locker, quick! T spots a couple of lounge chairs with umbrellas on the beach, right in front of one of the dolphin lagoons (I think there are 3, maybe 4 dolphin lagoons). We get a great view of other groups going ahead of us. We cant wait till its our turn to go, so we try to take a nap to pass the time. No can do, Im too excited.
Finally, our time comes up and we head out to Starfish Cabana. We are a couple minutes late, oops! We are hushed in and assigned a group letter, B. The Discovery Cove guy welcomes everyone and begins his dolphin spiel. He goes over some dolphin facts, anatomy, and tells us a bit about the dolphins at Discovery Cove. He talks about dolphins born in captivity versus those born in the wild. He warns us not to swim with wild dolphins. Obviously. Anyway, he starts a short video presentation for us to enjoy. Its basically a Discovery Cove commercial. Come on, lets get with the program already, we want to go in the water!
Thank goodness thats over. We head out to the beach and find our groups. We are in group B with 6 other people. Darnit, I think, why does our group have to be so big? It looks like the biggest one! Oh well. We are introduced to our two dolphin trainers who are leading our group. Greg and Craig? David and Greg? Matt and Craig? I dont remember, but they were good. We wade out into the dolphin pool and boy is this water COLD! Its freezing! Oh, theyre Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins. Makes sense. Greg/Craig/David/Matt call over Jenny, our rubbery play-friend. I think he says she is 26 years old kind of up there in dolphin years. We come up to Jenny to touch her, two people at a time. T says she feels like a vinyl record. This is so awesome! She does all sorts of tricks for us .waves, sprays us with water, just goof ball dolphin stuff. Its now time to go out into the lagoon with her! Greg/Craig/David/Matt picks T and I to go first. Yes! We swim out to the middle of the lagoon with a trainer and wade there until Jenny shows up right next to us. He has us spin around in a circle and then Jenny does the same! We pet her some more while talking with the trainer for a few minutes. Now its time to head back to shore and Jenny will be our ride! I get to go first! Yay! I hang on to Jenny and she swims me to shore. Its not fast, but its exhilarating to be pulled around by a dolphin! T gets his turn next. It looks like Jenny has to drag him to shore because hes so big. Just kidding! While others in our group swim out to the middle of the lagoon we get to play with Jenny a bit more. I cant imagine doing this only once, we have to come back next time! Jenny flips over for us so we can rub her belly. I wonder how my dogs at home are doing? Now its time for some fishy dolphin kiss and T goes first. Then I go next. Im so glad she doesnt bite my face off. We get to feed her some fish too. Stinky! Our time with Jenny is up and we are led back to our cabana where we are seated in front of computers so we can select which photographs we want to buy for the price of a small car. Our group photographer goes over all the different photo sizes and products we can buy: key chains, snow globes. Who would want a snow globe of themselves? We sift through our photos and realize that the one of me kissing Jenny is missing! Oh no! Thats the only one I really wanted! The family next to ours says that one of theirs is missing too. The photographer goes to the main office to try to recover our photos. We wait about 15 minutes for her to come back to tell us that the photos are gone. They dont know what happened. I ask her if this happens often and she says no, never. Great. We wait a while longer while some of the employees converse back and forth about what to do. Everyone seems confused.
Finally, someone comes over to us and says to meet at the beach with the next group for a retake. Yay! We have about 45 minutes so we decide to go and grab lunch.
The line at lunch is a little long, about 15 people in front of us. When its finally our turn I order the chicken fingers, and T orders a bacon cheeseburger. I have to wait for the chicken fingers because they had just run out. We finally have all of our food and make our way over to a table. The food was surprisingly very good. Everything was delicious.
After lunch we head over to the beach for the retake photo of me and the dolphin. Looks like we just missed the last group so the lady there tells us to come back in 30 minutes. We decide to just hang around the dolphin pool and watch anyway. Our photographer shows up and she decides that I dont need to wait for the next group since Jenny is already right here on the shore showing off.
I wade in there with her. Yippee, I cant believe I get to do this twice! I get my kissy photo and say thanks to Jenny.
We decide to do the stingray lagoon before we leave. I love these guys. They are so soft and smooth. They come up to us like cats and rub their wings against us. This lagoon is only 4 - 5ft. deep. I notice there are professional photographers in this lagoon too, but we dont need more pictures.
Its 3:30pm and were ready to go home. We decide to skip the aviary that they have. Were not really into birds anyway. We shower and change, and get ready to head back to our new hotel, the Animal Kingdom! But first, more photos! T takes a photo of me at the entrance of the park just before we leave. I also take a photo of him. We take one last look at the park and notice that the lazy river is still empty. There is a pretty waterfall that goes into it though.
The drive back to AKL is uneventful. When we arrive T drops me off at the front so he can go park the car. I tell him Ill wait for him in the lobby. I havent had a chance to sit on those cushy-looking couches yet! Boy does the air conditioning feel good! After a minute or 2 of sitting I remember the room situation from this morning. I look over to see that there is no line at the front desk. Great! I mosey on over there and am greeted by Claire. Claire is awesome, and is very sweet. I tell her about my animal viewing concerns and she says that what we have(Sunset Savannah) is actually a very good place to be. She says a lot of the animals end up there because its much more quiet than the main area. So Claire tells me I should give the room a chance, and I agree. Since I was still waiting for T, and there was nobody in line, we keep on chatting. She tells me everything I ever wanted to know about the Lodge, explained all the different viewing areas, the restaurants, pool, laundry, everything! She was much MUCH better than the first CM we encountered this morning who just went through the motions.
Its been almost 20 minutes and T still isnt back! I know the parking must be far, but geeze! I finally see him coming towards me, but from the other direction, not the front entrance. He tells me he went all the way up to the room because he didnt see me in the lobby. I told him I was at the front desk. Oops! We go back up to the room and thats when T decides he needs some water. We discuss who is going to get this water. He is saying that hes already walked twice as far as me today since he went back up to the room, and then back down to the lobby to look for me. Ok, fair enough I guess.
I mean, I did say I would be waiting on the couch. Since there isnt any water in the vending machines for some odd reason, I have to walk all the way to Mara from the very end of the Kudu Trail to get it. Since Im nice, I stop to fill up the ice bucket too.
T takes some photos of our view from the balcony. Heres what we see to our left, the people pen. This is what we see towards the middle. Within minutes a couple of giraffes show up. One of them decides to bend over for a drink of water. I love how they have to bend their knees like that. Cool!
We have dinner PSs this evening at 7:00pm for Boma. I cant wait to try this restaurant! We are seated almost immediately after checking in at the podium and are served by a so-so waiter. I forget his name. Hes from Morocco. I try a little bit of everything as it is a buffet style restaurant. I love the coconut curry seafood soup. And the prime rib. And the roasted chicken. All of the dishes are Africanized in flavor. Except the spaghetti and meatballs, macaroni and cheese, and the chicken fingers. Oh, those chicken fingers! I love the chicken fingers. I swear, its the best ever. T is still feeling a bit under the weather and hardly eats anything. The bill comes and T says that if he knew it would cost this much, he would have eaten more.
Cost: $58.00 tip included. Its a really great bargain considering all of the unique dishes they serve, and all of the wonderful desserts! I would definitely love to come back here.
We are pretty exhausted from our day so we just head back upstairs to retire.
