With the exception perhaps of Space Mountain (and for some Big Thunder Mountain Railroad), the Magic Kingdom isn't exactly known for thrilling amusement park types of rides. Yet in spite of it's family friendly theme, there is one little ride that can actually hold it's own with many amusement park thrillers - the Mad Tea Party.
Unlike most Disney rides that are pretty much stuck in the "let's-keep-this-as-a-family-ride-only" kind of mode, the Mad Tea Party has the option of transforming itself into a wild, hurl inducing ride if one so desires.
I have seen many a family member turn green as another family member pushes the small tea cups to their limits of rotational velocity.
One of my earliest childhood memories of Disney is encouraging my dad to spin those cups as fast as he could, even though he and my mom were beginning to take on a nice greenish complexion. Afterwards both my parents and my brother felt sick, whereas I absolutely loved the sensation (and thus began a life-long obsession with high-speed rotational rides).
You wouldn't really think that such a small ride located near the middle of the most kid friendly part of the park could be guilty of such maleficence, but sure enough it is.
For me the Mad Tea Cups is a classic that I hope is lovingly recreated (or simply just moved) with all of it's crazy, spinning madness when the Fantasy land expansion takes place.
True, it's not really on my "must-do" list, and in fact our last trip we didn't ride it, but it's the kind of ride that makes you feel better just knowing it's there, waiting to challenge the insides of unexpecting guests.
What are some of your best memories of this classic? Have you (or someone in your family) had the pleasure of getting sick on this ride?
