IMHO, I'd go with the Hoop de Doo Revue.

I've done both (although the Luau was 10+ years ago). Although both were very enjoyable, I think the HDDR has more kid-friendly food (corn on the cob, fried chicken, strawberry shortcake, etc). I also think that the show is more kid-friendly and fun -- lots of jokes, silliness, and audience participation. If your 8yo is anything like mine -- he/she will find it hysterical.

The luau was very enjoyable too, but I think it would be better for older kids/adults.

We went to the HDDR in november. I was not thrilled with the food - no corn, baked beans, chicken and ribs with Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. The food was ok, nothing special - my DDs did get Mac N Cheese because they didn't like the food. The show was funny and my 9 & 7 year olds enjoyed it. I would not go again - nor would I recommend it.

As with the above poster, I've been to both, but I haven't been to a luau in a long time. If it is the same food, the adults enjoyed it, but the young children not so much. although it seems healthier. It was entertaining as far as the "fire dancing" but the kids were soon bored with the Luau dancing after a while. It does appear that they offer a child's menu:
"Child Dinner Show Menu - Young Guest's 3-9 Menu: Macaroni and Cheese, chicken nuggets, peanut butter and jelly and hot dogs. "

I think the kids would enjoy the HDDR more. As for the food, the children in my family aren't necessarily "fried chicken" eaters, but they enjoyed the food, and the dessert.

Momma,

That's interesting. You weren't served corn while you were there?

My sons 11 and 10 loved it. My daughter 5 did not. We had a table that was right next to the stage so there was quite a bit of interaction. My 10 year old is a ham so the more he hammed it up the more they interacted with him.

I thought the food was good. Nothing special but good none the less.

DD (6) votes for the Hoop Dee Doo. And now she also wants to know when we will be going again...thanks alot! ;)

We went to the Hoop De Doo Revue when my dd was 6, she loved it and so did we. I would recommend it. The food was good, I mean it's not steak and lobster, but it was good fried chicken and ribs. My dd ate 7 chicken legs that night. Trust me I don't know where she put them. :confused3 :lmao:

I've been to HDDR 5 times with the most recent being 3 wks ago. I would not go again. The food was just OK, the dessert was not even decent- extremely dry. They don't offer corn on the cob anymore either. My mother went a year ago and she had the same experience but thought it was just an off night.

I have never been to the luau but have done hoop de doo my kids 11,7 and 4 loved it. The food was pretty good and there was lots of it. We were there in september

We love HDDR and it is a must do for my family every trip. It is better entertainment hands down than the luau and I think the food is better too. My girls insist on going every trip.
