New Director and Set Designer Sign On For Little Mermaid
By Andrew Gans
09 Nov 2004

Francesca Zambello will direct and George Tsypin will design the sets for the upcoming Broadway mounting of the hit Disney film "The Little Mermaid."

Variety reports that Disney Theatricals' Thomas Schumacher confirmed the new creative team, adding, "It's not an aquatic show. There won't be any swimming. We didn't have animals walking on all four in The Lion King."

It's been over a year since Matthew Bourne and Lez Brotherston, who had originally signed on for directing and scenic design duties, bowed out of the Disney project.

New director Zambello will be making her Broadway debut with Little Mermaid. Her directorial credits include the Bregenz Festival's production of West Side Story, the Metropolitan Opera's staging of Les Troyens and the Disney theme park version of Aladdin.

Designer Tsypin's work was seen on Broadway in the 1993 revival of In the Summer House. He also designed the sets for Julie Taymor's The Magic Flute, which began performances at the Metropolitan Opera in October, and worked with director Zambello on the aforementioned West Side Story production.

David Ives is still set to pen the book for the stage adaptation of the 1989 Disney film. Perhaps best known for his one-act comedies — All in the Timing and Time Flies — Ives has adapted several musicals for the City Center Encores! series, including The Pajama Game, Strike Up the Band, Wonderful Town, The Boys From Syracuse and Do Re Mi.

The industry paper also reports that composer Alan Menken has written ten songs for the stage version of Mermaid.

The new musical On the Record, featuring more than 50 songs from the Disney catalogue, begins its national tour Nov. 9 at Cleveland's Palace Theatre.

Emily Skinner and Brian Sutherland head the cast of the musical, which will play the Ohio theatre through Nov. 21 before heading to Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Michigan, Indiana, Florida, Texas and California. On the Record, according to production notes, "is the story of a recording session that changed the lives of a young unknown who is about to get her big break, a pop diva who is about to meet her match, and a matinee idol who is about to meet the 'new kid' who could take his place."

Directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom, the musical's creative team comprises Natasha Katz (lighting), Robert Brill (scenery), Gregg Barnes (costumes), David Chase (musical supervision and arrangements), Chad Beguelin (scenarist) and Acme Sound Partners (sound design).

Skinner plays Diane, a celebrated recording star, and Sutherland stars as Julian, the "forty-ish matinee idol." The company also includes Ashley Brown as Kristen, the fresh-faced newcomer, and Andrew Samonsky as Nick, another up-and-coming performer. Tony Award winner Richard Easton voices the Sound Engineer. The cast also features Meredith Inglesby, Andy Karl, Tyler Maynard, Keewa Nurullah, Josh Franklin, Leigh Ann Larkin, Koh Mochizuki and Lyn Philistine.
