The hype of attractions and restaurants

Here's the thing: I have no desire to meet Anna & Elsa, I don't like meet and greets that much and I don't care for Frozen. Also, we've dined at places like CRT and Le Cellier and while they're fine, there are plenty of other places I prefer.

But I want to get FPs and ADRs for these things/places.

Is it just because people keep talking about it? Is it because they're harder to get so I want to see if I can get them? Is the mere hype of it making me want them? I probably won't because it'll take the place of someone dying to do it, but the temptation is interesting.

Am I the only one who feels that way? Like if no one talked about Le Cellier, would anyone even care if they got in or not?

ETA: I don't book popular things for fun, I book them because I want them but I'm just curious if maybe I want them because they're so popular and if anyone else feels this way.

You want to get FP's because you want to see what it's all about. If everyone is obsessed with this "thing" (show, M&G, ride, restaurant) then it must be amazing, and you don't want to miss the experience.

Our family didn't watch Frozen until April. My DD4 kept talking about Anna and Elsa because her friends at school saw the movie and talked about it. I figured it was just another princess movie and I thought it would die off like the excitement over Merida or Rapunzel. After seeing the movie, though, I understand people's excitement over these two princesses. I understand why people wait 4 hours to meet them. The movie is really that good.

So if you haven't seen the movie you won't "get" the experience. Just know that it's a really good movie and the characters are well-done and easy to connect with. That's why there's a lot of hype. As for the experience, well it's just meeting some young women in a costume. You decide if that's worthy of using your FP+ for.

I've seen Frozen a couple of times and it's one of my least favorite Disney movies. I just don't understand why everyone loves it so much, but that's another issue.

It's the power of group thought. It's why people tend to just look for the line, or book the "best FP+" or get the hard to get reservation.

I am not one that anyway should see something they have no interest in just to see what it is about. Do the things that interest you, eat at places you enjoy and fit your schedule, regardless of how popular they are.

I see people who never/rarely eat breakfast at home waking up 90 minutes early so they can go sit down at some character buffet at 8:45 am, missing some of the best park time of the day just so they can eat at a "character breakfast" when a lunch makes much more sense for their schedule, family and is a better value. People don't know why they do it, they just do it because everybody else does it.

That might be some insight into your answer....personally, if I watch a movie and don't like it, I am not watching it again. Especially a couple of times.

It might just be your desire to see what everyone likes about something so much....my advice is to just...........

As per PPs, if you have no interest in Anna or Elsa, don't waste one of your FPs on meeting them. Use it on something you REALLY want to do and leave that coveted A&E FP for someone that desperately wants it. :)

If you actually intend to meet them I am of the opinion that the reason doesn't matter. If you change your mind then you can cancel the FP and make someone else happy. I'd cancel it though, not just let it expire, since it's a highly coveted FP.

I'd advise you to visit the Disney Restaurants forum and do a search for Le Cellier. That hype is long gone thanks to the menu changes.

As for wanting to book things because they're popular I get it. It's the whole phenomenon of not wanting to miss out on something special, especially when talking about a Disney trip you likely spent a lot on and have expectations of perfection on. CRT and BOG are the current leaders in this category due to their theming.

I can't relate although I sympathize with your condition. It's kind of bizarre, yet funny, don't you think? I don't like meet and greets and I don't like character meals therefore I don't do them, much less try to get a FR+ for them. I get the occasional ADR for Le Cellier because I like the menu. Everybody's different, I guess.

I felt the same way! After all the hysteria about Frozen meet & greet, I booked a FP in May to meet them just to see what all the fuss was about. They were lovely ladies, but just not for me.

A favorite past-time of a lot of people who didn't like Frozen seems to be making sure everyone around them knows that they didn't like Frozen. If you think you may fit that category you might enjoy being in the standby line; two whole hours of telling some poor mom of two infatuated, Elsa costumed little girls how you can name a dozen Disney movies you liked better. "I just don't get it!" :crowded::rolleyes2:mad::duck:

It's called marketing. It's why consumers consume stuff they don't need. When done properly, it creates desire where there wouldn't have been one otherwise. It makes people feel as if their lives would be better if they aquired/used a product/service, and conversely that they will be lacking something if they don't. E.G - upgrading iPhones yearly. In your case, something that was originally either slightly or not at all desirable has become more desirable from sheer exposure to "hype" (aka marketing). These boards are definitely indirect marketing for Disney.

I only wish we had no one in our party interested in Frozen or any meet and greets. That's how we rolled before kids and I was much happier for it. I can't imagine a bigger waste of time than standing in line to meet people dressed in costumes pretending to be princesses.

I'd rather wait in line to meet the people who actually made the movie. Like the character animators or the director. Now that would be worth something!

I'm kind of in the same boat, although I don't go so far as to actually book the ADRs or FPs. I'm completely in the "don't understand the Frozen hype" category. And I have boys who are 12 and 14. So absolutely no A&E FP for us--thankfully!

But I also plan to completely skip all the Frozen stuff at DHS. Then I come here and read the forums and feel, "Oh, my gosh, I have to go. I can't miss it. My life won't be the same if I skip it. My trip will be a total waste of time without it. I can't let my family down that way!" So I have to talk myself in off the ledge and realize that it's not for us. Just because other people are over the top about it doesn't mean we have to be and our vacation is going to be just as special to us as theirs is to them.

I had a BOG reservation for dinner. Didn't really want it. But since it was there, felt we HAD to take it. I ended up cancelling it. Felt incredibly guilty and didn't even want to admit I'd do such a thing! But it's not for us. We have a FP for lunch there and that's all I want to do.

Never been to CRT (again, the boy thing!) and don't feel a deep yearning that something's missing in my life because of it. But yet, there is that nagging, "Am I supposed to do this? Everyone goes on and on about it. The ADRs are SO hard to get, it must be that good. How can I just skip it?" But I do.

There's definitely a pull to fall in with the masses and have to do these things. And at first, I would give in to some of it. But now I've decided there's plenty that my family actually wants to do and it doesn't have to be the same as everyone else.

BTW -- Dole Whip is another one in this category! Don't understand the hype and have absolutely no desire to have one there. Have had it locally and it's meh--soft serve ice cream with no dairy. How does that become a must do???

I did CRT with my family years ago, and honestly, didn't find the food all that great. We did it for my nieces, because they were BIG into the Disney Princesses at the time, but it wasn't one of those things we had to do on every trip. Once was enough for us. BOG, on the other hand, I'd love to go back to after doing it once in December.

I've been in 2007 and 2010, and both times the only character experiences we've had have been on the streets in the parks, and at a very select few adr's that my sister made for us. I have never personally made any adr's. We met a LOT of characters in the parks, and we still ate some pretty awesome food along the way. When my sister had a zillion adr's made, we found her constantly checking the time and saying she couldn't have time for this ride or that ride because they had to make their way over for a meal. We were more fly by the seat of our pants I guess, where as she had things planned to the minute. lol

I love this post.

I'm so tired of hearing "I don't get Frozen.., blah blah blah, least favorite Disney movie ever... Blah blah blah

I thought Cars wasn't very interesting and for the life of me can't understand why they built an entire park for it, but hey, I get that most kids dig it! I don't go around posting on message boards about how I don't get Cars. Sheesh

Sounds to me like the combo of Disney advertising and the scarcity of these described REPEATEDLY on DIS and elsewhere is getting to you!

Pretty simple. The magic of marketing...

We don't do character M&Gs other than Mickey. Just not our thing, so we wouldn't use a FP for this even if it was given to us and didn't count against our regular allocation.

We use FP+ for rides that we like - not rides that everyone else likes. An example for us would be Peter Pan. This is typically a ride for families with young children, but we still love it and can't miss it.

Love the song "Let it Go!".

The one thing my dd wanted to do for this summers vacation at WDW was get a picture with A&E, and when I made our FP+ selections at 60 days none were available. I tried a few times but didnt let myself get obsessed with checking over and over :upsidedow Then shortly before the start of vacation they came out with the Frozen summer activities at DHS. We had no plans to visit DHS this trip, but I went ahead and purchased the frozen package. When I told my dd she said that was crazy for the price and she didn't want want to go to DHS since there wasn't any meet and greet and all she really wanted was a picture. Sooo, I cancelled the package but I was kinda sad :upsidedow And I didn''t really get the frozen movie, I've watched it a few times with dd and I fall asleep!! Yes, the magic of marketing!
