About 679,000 Hewlett-Packard digital cameras are being recalled worldwide because they can cause some batteries to overheat when the camera is connected to an AC adapter or docking station, posing a fire hazard, U.S. regulators said on Tuesday.

Hewlett-Packard is recalling HP Photosmart R707 digital cameras after receiving one report of a camera catching fire. No injuries have been reported, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The cameras were sold at electronic, computer, camera and online stores nationwide from August 2004 through April 2006 for between $250 and $400. About 224,000 cameras in the United States are being recalled, according to the agency.

The agency said consumers should stop using the recalled cameras and contact the company for a firmware update that prevents the camera from applying a charge to a non-rechargeable battery. The update can be downloaded on Hewlett's website, HP.com, or consumers can contact the company directly at (866) 304-7117.

I actually have that camera and have never had a problem.

I was very happy with it until I got my Canon (well - I'm still happy with it when I want something small, or if DD wants to take a camera someplace.)

I will get the firmware, as it is a good little camera. I think that's what we bought my mother too (my Dsis ordered it for her), so I will have to get her to take care of it for my mom.

Thanks for the help on Snow White!

During Characters in Bloom weekend, another Diser "HugsforEeyore" was in town. She is a character guru, and she posted that on the Friday she had seen them out - they were doing individual pics and autographs, so I went to EPCOT on a VERY hot Saturday just to find them. That was my sole purpose for being there that day! I love the group photo, but I still need to get autographs since they did not sign that day!

We've seen this story reported in many forms on many sites but only truly accurately on Imaging-Resource. The reality is that HP are not recalling the R707 but have instead issued firmware which can prevent a fire hazard. If the camera was used with a non-rechargeable battery (such as a Lithium Duracell CP-1) and then connected to the AC adapter or docking station there was a potential for the battery to overheat and even catch fire. This new firmware resolves this issue.
