The Honeymoon That Made Me a Disney Convert

Hello fellow Michigander. I am really enjoying your report. It sounds like you had a wonderful time and were able to finally relax after your busy wedding. I know what you mean about being busy. Our youngest daughter just got married last Saturday and we were busy busy busy. Looking forward to reading the next part.

We are up early again. It seemed easy though, because we are not setting our alarms at all. We were just getting to bed early enough, and sleeping really well, so we just woke up pretty early. We got up and decided not to take showers (we were just going to get wet anyway). Instead we did some chores around the room. It was a little bit messy, and they were going to be there today to give us more towels etc. We threw a load of laundry into the machine. It was at this moment that I realized why they call these resorts home away from home. Yes, I enjoyed the full kitchen and the living room space was really nice for the afternoons that we spent in the room, but the washing machine was the most amazing feature. I washed several loads of clothes, and it was so nice that all of my clothes were fresh all of the time. The room we were in really did have all of the comforts of home. Except…. I don’t have granite countertops at home, I don’t have a whirlpool tub, and I have to climb down into my dingy basement to do laundry at my house. This place, in some ways, was a lot nicer than my home! We really appreciated our room.

Once it was time to head out we slathered ourselves with sunscreen and were off While Matt didn’t share my passion for getting to the parks as soon as they opened, he was open to getting there early. I know he felt like I was pushing him to go really fast though. Oh well. On our way to the bus we realized we hadn’t yet decided which park we were going to. We didn’t even really talk about it, it just seemed like Blizzard Beach was the answer. I had never been there, and Matt had always enjoyed it when he went with his family. We didn’t have to wait long for the bus at all. There were a few other groups of people going to the park, and they were all wearing their suits and towels. I had been a little self conscious about wearing my suit under my clothes, but these people made me feel better about that decision.

I was so excited. I love water parks, and never get to go to them. I am way too self conscious to go to one at home. In Florida it is a different story. I feel like there is little to no chance of running into someone I know in WDW (which is silly, because I did run into a kid from high school when I went with Matt’s family during my senior year).

Anyway! This is the most excited I have been for the entire trip. The only downside was that we had to walk around all day in our bathing suits. Oh well, such is life. Everyone is in their bathing suit at a water park, so everyone looks pretty much the same right? Right! It wasn’t an issue at all. I may have felt silly wearing my bathing suit, but once we got into the park it was worth it. I did not need to waste time changing, going to the bathroom, etc. We went straight to the chairs and set up our little camp for the day. We decided that it would be alright to leave our stuff by the chairs while we were enjoying the attractions. Matt was able to put our room keys in a plastic bag in a pocket in his trunks. I didn’t pack anything in my bag that day that I would be sad if I lost, so I felt okay about leaving our items unattended.

We wasted no time getting settled. I set off to rush towards Summit Plummet, and Matt informed me that he would wait for me. I was amazed and angry… and befuddled. He had kept saying that he wasn’t going to go on any body slides at the water parks, but come on! I didn’t want to go by myself! Well, he did refuse, and so I went on Summit Plummet all by myself, and was terrified, all by myself! He had described it as painful, I disagree, but I doubt I’ll do that one again. The ride was not worth the nine million stairs you must climb.

After I went on a couple rides by myself we tackled the tube rides and non-body slide rides. We had a blast! A few of the slides we were afraid we might die on, and we spent the morning going from one slide to the next. We had gotten there pretty early in the day and so we didn’t have much of a wait for most of the rides. After we had tried all of the slides we decided to give the lazy river a try. I thought this would be a very relaxing experience, but I was mistaken. The lazy river was packed! There were people everywhere. We had to basically take people out to even get our tubes, and then it was a real spectacle to watch the two of us try and get into those stupid things. It was so much easier when we were kids! In addition to the thousands of people ruining my relaxing ride there were also various cold streams of water flowing off of various things, so even if I could relax I would have been snapped out of the moment by the cold water falling on me. You would think that when the heat index is over 100 degrees this wouldn’t bother you, but it did get to me. The lazy river surely appeals to some, but I am not one of them.
We were basically done with this park by 11:00 am and decided that since we were so close we might as well hit the Winter Summerland Golf Course. We both love mini-golf! That was fun. It took us a long time to get settled though, it seemed like they were trying to delay us from starting too soon after the group in front of us. I actually appreciate that, I hate waiting at mini-golf. We golfed the winterland part of the course, because at that point I was sick of anything and everything summer! We did of course end up being behind a very large group of eight or so. We caught up with them around the eighth hole. We followed them for three holes before we realized that they were not going to offer to let us play through. There was no one behind us so we just got a couple sodas and sat on a bench while they played a couple more holes in front of us. We took our time and let them always be at least one hole ahead of us. It worked out well, and we were able to really enjoy golfing. Matt works in MI government for a trade association. He spends his summers, springs, and falls taking legislators golfing, or attending golf outings that are fundraisers. He is one of the lucky ones and during the summer no fewer than two days during the week consist of him golfing. This is why it is amazing that I was beating him; which he did not like. He intentionally “lost” our scorecard, so I don’t know how badly I beat him, but I know that it didn’t go well for him. Then it was back to the resort for some frozen pizza, leftover alfredo from Italy, and Oreos with milk. Yum.

For the rest of the afternoon we just stuck around the hotel. We swam, I took a bath. We both napped. I watched TV in the living room while Matt watched in the bedroom. Matt went swimming again by himself. I called various loved ones. All in all it was a VERY relaxing afternoon. Then around 4:30 we headed out to DTD for our viewing of La Nouba. Since we were hours early I wanted to look around a little. We went to the x-mas store where we (I) went nuts! I bought us a special wedding bulb and had them personalize it, and I bought a bunch of ornaments for our tree, and also for gifts for family. We spent a ton of money here, and since it was only day four we were able to send then items right back to our rooms! We went to get ice cream, and look around DTD. I have to say that I was not impressed with the ice cream I got, I was disappointed because I had heard so much about it. The World of Disney Store was so packed that I quickly lost interest, and so we meandered around the West Side for awhile. We were both kicking ourselves for leaving so early, because I think we would have both rather been hanging out in our room than being bored and waiting for our show.

Just as we were walking to the theatre we felt something we had not felt in since we got to Florida; rain! It was just a light sprinkle. By the time we got into the theatre it was an all out down pour. People were rushing inside drenched, and unhappy. Thankfully we were safely inside before the rain got too bad. We were seated for the show in perfect seats. We were close enough to see everything, but not so close that we missed stuff. We both really loved the show. Matt was actually far more interested in it than I was. He says that it was the best thing we have done at Disney. We have since seen Ka and Zoomanity in Las Vegas, and he wants to go back to Vegas to see “O”. He is hooked on Cirque! I am not upset at all with this obsession, because I love it too.

After the show we hopped back on the buses and set out for our dinner in Epcot. We were trying to decide where to eat, and I suggested China. I was met with moans and groans, but it was the only place we could get last minute ADR, so I won that fight. I ended up liking Matt’s meal much more than I liked mine, but the atmosphere was nice, and the food was alright. I thought that the won ton soup was some of the best I have ever eaten. We had hoped to maybe be able to catch Illuminations again while in Epcot, but it was going on during our meal and we could only hear the fireworks. We decided to catch the 11:00 Fantasmic, but on our way we wimped out and decided to head in and just go to bed.

really enjoying your report! going with DH in August and reading about another couple going in the heat is getting me excited!

hopefully it won't be too bad, as I am from Dallas and it gets pretty humid here.

anxiously awaiting the next installment! :cool1:

I'm enjoying your report. Keep it coming.
BTW - I'm a cirque fan too. I loved LaNouba (I've actually seen it four times - taking various people to WDW). I've never seen Ka (wasn't out yet when I was in Vegas) but saw "O" and loved that. Can't wait to see the new one that starts in June - to the Beatles music.

I"m really enjoying your report!

Sounds like you two were really on the go, but at the same time relaxed a lot!

*Patiently awaiting next installment!*

Once again, we are up so early! It seems like we don’t get up this early when we are at our own home… Oh well. This morning we didn’t really have much of a game plan. We had dinner reservations at Victoria and Albert’s for 7:30, and after that we were going to head over to the Magic Kingdom to ride some of the rides with EMH. We had already done MGM, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and a water park so we didn’t really know what to do. After hanging out in the room for awhile, we decided that it would be fun to finally check out Stormalong Bay, and just hang out at the hotel and enjoy the resort.

The pool is a lot of fun. There are slides, sand, beaches, and all sorts of fun things to do at the pool. We grabbed a couple of chairs, and hit the pool. It was fun to just explore the pool, and swim around for awhile. There are waterfalls and other little distractions in the pool. There is a lazy river that we enjoyed. After about an hour or so though, we had had enough of the pool.

One problem that I have with this pool is it’s popularity. It is just so crowded all of the time. I know most people would give their right arm to swim there, and I understand that many people choose this hotel for the pool, but I just like to swim with fewer people. There were many features of the pool that I never experienced because it was always so crowded, even right at 10:00 when the pool opened. I do think that kids would love this pool though, and it is by far the most impressive pool I have ever swam in.

Once we were done swimming we returned to the room. I took a bath (of course) and we were starving from our busy morning of swimming. Where to eat? Should we go to Epcot and try one of those restaurants? Should we give Cape May Café a try? Wait, no they are not even open for lunch. Well, after much deliberation we decided to go back to the ESPN club. I had secretly wanted to go back there even since my last lunch. It was so good that I could not even wait to grab another hot dog. This time we were sat in the main dining room because we got there just after they opened, and we were going to have a long wait for a booth. This was a huge disappointment for me, but what can you do? While I did ordered the same meal, it was simply not the same. I was not nearly as tired or hungry or hot as I was on the other day. I still enjoyed the food, it was just a different experience.

During the afternoon we just kind of hung out. This was what made the Villa so nice. The one bedroom was very nice. We were able to spread out, we spent the day watching tv and just hanging out and relaxing in the room. We snacked on some of our snacks, but were careful not to eat too much, because we had an awesome dining experience ahead of us. Matt was able to fall asleep and take a nap, and I just watched TV. It was really, really nice. In retrospect I don’t know why we didn’t go and stroll through the World Showcase, or hang out at innovetions, but we just chose to chill, and it was really nice. We knew we were going to have a super long night, because the park didn’t even close until 2:00 am, so we just prepared for our evening. The honeymoon was a marathon, not a sprint!

We both got a jazzed up for dinner, partly because it was fun, and partly because it was required. I felt so bad for Matt! The heat index was still in the 100s and he had to wear a suit and tie, and he was visibly uncomfortable. I, on the other hand, had a cute little light weight cocktail dress, so I was quite comfy (with the exception of the shoes on my feet!). After getting ready for an hour or so we were finally ready to leave.

We left quite early, for a few reasons. Neither Matt nor I had ever spent much time at the GF (I had never been there, and he had only been there once). I wanted to take my time and explore the grounds and the hotel in general. Also, since we were planning on going to the park after dinner we both felt we should probably change our clothes. We didn’t want to lug our bag with us into the nicest restaurant either of us had ever been in, so we had to check it with the front desk (which they were happy to do, and were very helpful with). I just wanted to make sure we had time to do all of that before we had to be at dinner.

It was excellent that we left early. Before our trip Matt and I fought tooth and nail over whether or not we should rent a car. I wanted to rent a car, Matt felt it was silly. We are planning a trip this August (for our one-year anniversary!) and we are fighting again about renting a car. I wanted to rent a car because I get impatient with the bus system. I feel like I am always just missing a bus, or just waiting unnecessarily for a bus. Admittedly, this had not been much of an issue for this trip. I think that most of that is because we didn’t really use the busses too much, since we didn’t need one for MGM or Epcot. We waited for our bus this time. We decided that we would just take the first bus we saw, because we could either transfer, or if it was the MK bus we could get on the monorail or a boat and go that way. While we were waiting the light afternoon drizzle turned into an all out downpour of rain. We were both all dressed up and getting somewhat drenched. We waited and waited and waited in the pouring rain. Twenty minutes later there was still no bus. After about a half an hour a bus to MK finally came.
The Beach Club has covered bus areas, which is lucky, but we couldn’t sit on any of the benches or anything, because we would have gotten our nice clothes wet. Once we finally got to MK we were able to just catch a boat going to the GF. The boat was also drenched. Every single seat was soaked, so we stood again on the boat.

It was really a lovely ride, the sun was just starting to set, and the lights were on at the hotel, but there was a very pretty pink glow over the lake. The rain had subsided and it was just beautiful out. It made the resort seem just magical.

When we finally got inside we were both in awe of our surroundings. I could have spent all night just looking at the flower arrangements in the lobby. I was very impressed, and a little part of me wished we were staying there, even though I loved our little room at the Beach Club. We got our bag situation squared away and then we had about a half an hour before our reservation. I was so impressed that they were so helpful with our bags. We were not hotel guests, but they bent over backwards to help us and make our transition easy. It was one of the better examples of excellent customer service that we received.

We were debating what to do. We thought about getting a drink at one of the bars, but both of us felt like we would consume plenty of wine during our wine flight, so we just wandered through the shops. We checked in with the host at V and A, and they told us our table wasn’t ready yet, so we waited outside in the waiting area. After about 20 minutes they had not been back to get us, so we went back in and had to ask again about our seating. I felt this was ridiculous! When we went in they were like “of course, right this way” I was so mad! They made it seem like they were waiting for us! Why didn’t they come out and get us when our table was ready? I simply expected better service, so I was not impressed from the get go.

up next: our dinner at Victoria and Albert's!

By the time we were settled into our seats with our complimentary amuse bouche of champagne I had forgotten all about the seating delay. I suggest to anyone that is going to Disney with a significant other that they save the money and go to this restaurant. We were seated at a lovely table with beautiful crystal. The room was softly lit with candles and soft light. There was a harpist playing softly in the background. The music did not dominate the atmosphere, it simply added to it. There was a beautiful red rose that lay across my plate, along with our personalized menus. The menu not only had our name, but also a message of congratulations on our recent marriage. It was very romantic. The service was friendly, and it was prompt, but not pushy. The server was also very professional, but without being stuffy, which I enjoyed. For instance, at one point she was having a hard time getting our coffee to warm up (they have a fancy vacuum press system that they present tableside) but she was calm, and had a sense of humor about it.

I had never truly had gourmet food before in my life, and I have to be honest, when I saw the menu, I was a little bit weary. They didn’t serve chicken fingers here… There were all sorts of foods that I am not familiar with, and the food that I can recognize is paired with stuff that sounds like it might taste yucky. The server does go through the menu with you, and is knowledgeable. They are informed, and can help you work through the menu. Another feature of the menu that I like is that they list the wine that is paired with each food course. I like this because the wine pairing is expensive, quite a bit more so than ordering one or two glasses of wine, or even a bottle for the table (well, a reasonably priced bottle) and if you don’t like the selection, you can choose what you want to do. I was worried that I would have to blindly say yes or no to the wine pairing. Of course we both decided yes on the wine pairing! It was our honeymoon after all!

There are not many choices for each course, which makes the selection process much easier. The menu has various upgrades for each course, and most of them are an additional 25$ or so. Matt and I both agreed that we would not opt for those selections, so there was usually only two or three selections. We both enjoyed what we ended up ordering.

I can say with confidence that I do enjoy gourmet food! I never would have guessed that ham, watermelon, cantaloupe, and shrimp would blend well and taste good, but it was delicious. Every single bite was complex, delicious, and enjoyable. It was delicious in a way that made you appreciate the food, and enjoy it slowly. The presentation of each course was like a piece of artwork. Matt and I took our time and enjoyed each course, and we made the meal a very special time for the two of us.

For the most part we picked different selections for each course, but for the main course we both ordered a filet with a gorgonzola and potato cheese wedge. It was delicious. It was an amazing steak with a sort of gourmet fried cheese stick (but so much tastier because there were potatoes in it)! We both also enjoyed the wine pairing. I found it to be a little too much to drink, so Matt ended up drinking most of my wine, but I had a few sips of each glass. Either way, we were both sufficiently tipsy by the end of the meal.

We both loved the coffee presentation, and I am totally inspired to buy a vacuum press... but won’t because I rarely actually make coffee. Besides being fun to brew at our table, the coffee also tasted excellent. Dessert is usually what people rave about from Victoria’s and Albert’s, but I thought mine was only so-so. I don’t have too much of a sweet tooth, and I think that to me, the rest of the dinner was so amazing that the dessert, while beautiful, could not compete. After about two and a half hours we were ready to head to MK! They brought us back our menu and rose; they also presented us with a chocolate card that congratulated us on our recent marriage. We would have liked to have stayed there for the rest of the trip, but this is unreasonable and also not economically feasible, so we left.

Nice Trip Report. Do you know if there is a washmachine in the studio's?

Ohmari, I do not think they do. We stayed in a one-bedroom, and we did have a washer and dryer, but I am pretty sure the studios do not.

We picked up our bag, changed in one of the fancy bathrooms, and hopped on the Monorail for MK. Wishes was long over at this point, it was almost 12:00 am actually. We had figured that since the EMH at AK was so dead we could expect a similar situation here. I was wrong, it was still a very crowded park. We were able to walk onto several rides though. We went on Buzz Lightyear, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Mickey’s Philharmagic, and the Haunted Mansion. The wait for Space Mountain was over an hour long, and so we decided that we would skip that. This is part of the reason that I love going back to the parks. I have been so many times that I don’t feel like I am missing out if the wait for a particular attraction is too long, because I have already done most of the attractions. When we were in MK we were both a little tired, despite our relaxing afternoon and morning. We were both happy to be there, but we were also anxious to do a couple of things and then get out. I also know that we got into a fairly wicked fight when we were there. I don’t really remember what we were fighting about, but I do remember that we were arguing. Nothing serious of course, but we were ready to go home.

The bus ride home was so crowded! It was also pretty loud, and I remember it as unpleasant. I thin that is probably because it was 1:30 am, and I had had enough “magic” for one day. We both crashed into bed almost immediately upon getting in, and slept off the evening. All in all day five was pretty amazing!

Day 6

We were both starting to get sad. We had nothing else planned, and our trip would be over in just two and a half days. I always let that bother me! For instance, I hate Sundays! I always spend Sunday dreading Monday, and I end up not enjoying the day off on Sunday. It is just plain silly. I know this about myself though, so I artfully planned my return date for Monday, and I didn’t have to return to work until Thursday. Therefore, even though I only had two full days of my vacation left, when I got home I would have two full days to relax before I had to go back to work. Genius. So, the sadness was not too distracting.

It is Saturday morning, and we had already been to each park (Epcot a bunch of times) so we didn’t really know exactly what to do when we woke up. We did not wake up at 7:30 or 8:00 this morning, we actually slept in. We got up and decided to lunch at Beaches and Cream again. This time I got a hot dog, I wouldn’t recommend it, but the restaurant is so charming that I didn’t even really mind. We didn’t know what to do with ourselves, but I didn’t feel like sitting in our hotel room again, so we walked around the boardwalk. After a little while we decided that we should go to Downtown Disney, because Matt wanted to buy a sweatshirt to take home, and he also wanted to get small gifts for our family.

We decided to board the buses at the boardwalk. I am not sure how it happened, but we ended up waiting for the bus, then we missed it because we ran an errand, and had to wait for another one. This irritated me, but I got over it. I don’t really remember all that well what we did, but I do know that Matt did not get a sweatshirt. It was only like 1:00 we had decided during our shopping trip that we would do Fantasmic tonight. We made dining reservations at 50’s Prime Time Café, and would head to the show after that. I didn’t want to go to the park too early though, because we had already been there, and while the crowds were not too bad, I didn’t want to mess with them this afternoon. We decided to check out AKL, since we both thought it was a pretty cool idea for a hotel.

Resort hopping can certainly be a pain, but if you are going to do it, you should do it the way we did, which is to put it in between two different attractions. We boarded the AKL bus from downtown Disney, and then we went straight to MGM from there, so it didn’t really feel like we were spending too much time on the buses.

We were both supremely impressed with the AKL. We both loved the savannah. I can only imagine that having a savannah view room there would be amazing. I think that if money were never an issue, I would stay there for every trip. I don’t know that I would ever leave my balcony. We went to various viewing areas around the hotel, and we talked with some very knowledgeable CMs. We spent about an hour and a half checking out the resort, and then we were off to MGM.
