The History Buffs Thread

I love the Hawai'ian culture and language. It's so beautiful.

It is beautiful. From when I was six to eight years old, I took Hula and Tahitian. It was taught by some Hawai'ians. I learned a few words, but I can't remember now. I do remember trying to keep up with everyone and that we went and performed at dozens of shows. I still have my old costumes somewhere I think. Most of them were made, not purchased. But I don't dance anymore. Neither does my mom, who took lessons with me. Well, she occasionally dances in the kitchen, but that's not what I meant. Although, whenever He Me No Lilo comes on I can still remember some of the moves. I remember the beginning and the end, it's just the middle that's hard to remember. It was one of my two favorite dances.

But I'm wayyyyyy off topic.

That's so cool that you got to take Hula! I know a few words in Hawai'ian ("aloha", "mahalo", and the phrase "O ka 'ohana ke kahua, or "The family is the reason", and the words in Hawai'ian Roller Coaster Ride) and used to know the dance to "Pearly Shells" from Beach Party at WDW. But that was forever ago. We don't have that video anymore. :(

She shows the videos? That's awesome :teeth:

Yeah she incorporates the Horrible History vids into the lesson and then she leaves about 20 mins of class each day to watch a movie that always relates to what we're learning...Although we did watch Hercules once, not that I'm complaining, and I don't know why...:lmao:

Ohhhh! Anastasia! I actually have a Dear America book about her right here. I just havent read it yet. I need too, though.

Yeah. Our teacher did too during our mythology period. I loved that teacher. When I was in sixth grade doing world culture, my history tecaher showed nemo and the rescuers down under for australia. Mulan for China. Jasmine for Middle East and Arabia. But, after someone answered Agrabah on our history final for what the major country of the middle east is, we had to stop watching disney movies.

The whole mystery behinds Anastasia and Czar Nicholas' family amazes me and has always interests me. Hahaha That's probably not good, writing Agrabah on the final I mean, my teacher does that same thing.

I'd like to know, when do you start learning about British history in American schools? Also, I don't think we learnt American history at school. At least, not before GCSE, because I didn't continue with History.

At my school you take World History as a sophmore, or you can make it into Ap Euro now, but since we didn't have it until now(my senior year) I'm taking the other half of AP Euro(only one semester) and we'll most likely focus on Eastern European history like that of Great Britain. Also, we did British Literature my junior year in English:thumbsup2

for me it's probably colonial history and political history. I don't really have a preference for any part of the world or any time period, it's all interesting to me :)

I love the Christendom part of history (knights! <3) Other than that, the only history I really LOVE is Disney history. <3 :rotfl:

I love Greek mythology and anything from the Victorian era/turn of the century

I used to know that dance too and still get to see the video almost every day courtesy of my sister:cutie:

I took Global Studies freshman year so I might have learned some then (honestly I blocked out most of that class because it really stunk!). My sophomore sister is taking AP European History this year though so I'm guessing she'll learn some in that class.

As for my favorite part of history, it would have to be from colonial times up to the signing of the Constitution (basically until we had any presidents to memorize  ). And my other favorite is the time of the Vietnam War, not the actual war but the whole anti-war movement (one of my favorite musicals is Hair which takes place in that time period - hence my love of it)
