Hi there! Here is a report about my first ever trip to the Universal Resort. Please feel free to ask questions!

Here are the details...

Dates/Location: Saturday June 9 - Tuesday June 12, 2012 @ The Royal
Pacific Resort

Cast: My sister/best friend Candice, 32, HUGE fan of Harry Potter, has been
to WDW 3 times with the last time being about 6 years ago :wave2:
Me, 35 (for a few more days!), a card carrying WDW addict who
really had very little interest in US/IOA but had enjoyed the HP
books/movies

How We Got So Lucky:
My parents sent my sister and I on this trip to celebrate our
recent graduations from college. In May, my sister earned her Masters
in Marriage and Family Therapy and I (finally!) earned my Bachelor's in
Education.

And off we go...

Day 1
We flew to Orlando on a 7am flight via SW. We were at MCO a few minutes after 10am. I was so sad to see all the Disney Magical Express signs knowing I was about to get on a plain old Mears van and head to the darkside. I was so conflicted - I was looking forward to experiencing something new but would have gladly jumped on the Magical Express and been full of joy!

We arrived at the Royal Pacific Resort quickly and, even though it was early, our water view room was ready! We dropped off our bags and walked down to the concierge/ticket desk to get our park tickets. It was a bit confusing for a few minutes as the people tried to figure out how to issue our tickets. After a bit, someone told us that we would need to go to the park to get our tickets because the package was issued by Southwest. I was a bit irritated about this at the time because it took them about 20 minutes to decide that this was the only way for us to get our tickets. We took the water taxi over to Citywalk and hoofed it over to IOA. As we approached it was about noon and the lines at the ticket windows were ENORMOUS. We weren't sure where to find the line we were supposed to be in, the signs were not clear, and we couldn't find an employee to ask. We got in a line for "will call" tickets (because we had already paid for our tickets so it made sense to us!) and waited about 20 minutes. We got up to the computer and realized that this was not the place we needed to be! As I sputtered under my breath and headed to the area of the ticket windows again, my sister went and searched for a TM. Finally she found someone who said, "Southwest packages don't include tickets." AAAAAHHHH! She said, "This package did and we have the paperwork to show it." So the man told her we needed to get in lines at the main ticket windows. So Candice came back to me and told me about the conversation and we waited in line for our tickets. We were in line for nearly 90 minutes. So after it took us 2 hours to get tickets in our hand, I decided to recommend that people NOT buy Universal packages with tickets from Southwest. What a mess!

We entered the park and took our time walking over to WWoHP. We stopped at Poseidon's and made our way in without having any idea what it was. Have to say I thought the entire thing, from beginning to end, was pretty lame but I was glad to be out of the heat for awhile!

We made it to WWoHP and were instantly in awe. It was the most beautiful thing I've seen and it really felt like you were in Hogsmeade. I was so taken aback and when I looked at my sister, she had tears in her eyes! Now it was midday on a Saturday so we were in the midst of insane crowds. We walked around a bit, made a quick visit to Moaning Myrtle, and then went over to the Dragon Challenge. Because I'm 'pooh sized", I was very aware that many of the rides might exclude me so I went over to the trial seats. There was a very large woman sleeping in the bigger of the two seats. I tried out the "normal" seat and couldn't get the belt latched. So I stood up and looked at my sister and then back to Sleeping Beauty. After a minute or two, I approached the TM standing by the entrance to the ride and asked for help. The TM seemed very nice until I said, "Could you help me with this?" and she said, "What would you like me to do ma'am?" I was a bit taken aback and sort of stared at her for a minute... looked back at SB, and then said, "Wake her up so I can find out if I can ride?" The TM looked very annoyed, AT ME!, and said, "You can wake her up or just get in line. I think you'll be fine." I was stunned. I walked back to SB and said, rather loudly, "Hello!? Excuse me." SB opened her eyes and said, "Did you need this chair?" :confused3

I gave the seat a quick try, found that I fit okay, and we were off onto the red dragon. I told the attendant that we'd like Row 3 or 6 (I'm sure she could tell why!) and we were on pretty quickly. What I didn't know, however, is that not every seat in the row is modified. So I ended up in a standard seat and unable to buckle myself in. Another attendant came over and said, "You need the modified seat." So I looked at him and said, "I know this. The sign said Row 3 or 6 but I don't fit." So he pulled us out of line, hid us in a dark tunnel and said that he'd get us on the next train. So we waited and after a few trains went through, he came to get us and showed us to the modified seat. Although the process was annoying, we LOVED this coaster. It was great fun.

We had a quick lunch in The Three Broomsticks and found the food to be just so-so. We weren't expecting gourmet but I was hoping that my corn on the cob would be cooked! All in all it was a good experience, we really felt like Harry or Hagrid might stop in at any moment.

We walked through the park and got on Jurassic Park. I really liked this ride and thought it was well done. By the time we got out of the ride, the sky looked quite ominous. We decided to start walking towards the exit and got about 100 feet out of the JP exit area before the skies opened up on us. Although many people were scurrying for shelter, we just kept walking and enjoyed getting wet. (Ponchos in the summer, to me, are the worst idea EVER!) We went back to the hotel, put on dry clothes, and took a snooze in the AC.

The rain kept up for the remainder of the night so we stayed in. We had a lackluster dinner at Jack's. I had the pizza and my sister had a salad with chicken that she was not entirely pleased with. We went to bed pretty early in preparation for day 2!

Part II coming up soon.... We get to WWoHP nice and early and make it over to US!

Out of curiosity, how easy was the mears van process? Did you reserve it through their website? Thanks for any help, my wife and I are going to Universal the 19th, and have everything taken care of except transportation to and from the airport, trying to weigh out our options.

Day 2

We made it over to WWoHP by about 8:30 and headed right to Hogwarts Castle. I tried out the test seats in front of the ride and quickly determined that I wouldn't fit on to the ride. I decided to walk through the castle and enjoy the sights and just bow out before the ride portion. As we entered the castle, a TM directed single riders to the left and my sister headed in that direction. I did try to tell her that she would miss out on a ton of the pre-ride stuff but she didn't quite understand me so off she went. I took my time walking through the castle and loved all of the details. As I got closer to the ride, I saw TMs pulling certain people out of line to try a test seat and I was shocked when I wasn't chosen. So I decided that I would try to get on the ride. The worst that could happen would be they would tell me I couldn't ride (which I already knew). So I walked up, the TM told me to take the outside seat and I did. I sat down and bulled down the bar and waited to find out if this was really going to work. A male TM walked up and said I needed to "get one more click" and asked if I wanted help. I said "YES, PLEASE!" and he pushed it down and I was off! I instantly had tears of joy in my eyes and thoroughly enjoyed the ride from start to finish. Although, due to a bit of arachnophobia I closed my eyes for a short time! This ride was quite simply one of the best I have ever ridden on. They made it seamless, I almost believed that I had entered the "real" world of HP.

I finally met up with my sister who thought I'd gone missing because I was gone so long... We couldn't stop talking about all of the nuances of the ride, we'd both loved it so much!

We made a quick stop at the Flight of the Hippogriff. We know it is meant to be a kids coaster but we had to try it out. It was just okay but we both thought that the fact that we were in the front seat might have had something to do with it!

Then we went out to see what the line for Ollivander's was like and found it to be really really really long so we decided to skip it. We made our way over to The Three Broom Sticks for a yummy breakfast. We discovered that some of the nicest TMs worked in this restaurant and really enjoyed ourselves.

Afterwards we found the entire area to be swamped with people. We made our way over to the Owl Post, sent out specially stamped post cards to our kids (I have a DD9 and Candice has DS5 and DS6) and parents. Candice also got a frozen ButterBeer and thoroughly enjoyed it!

We made our way out of IOA and back to the hotel for some pool time. It is hot as hell in Florida right now and we were so grateful to have a great pool at the RPH to enjoy!

After our swim break, we headed over to Universal Studios. We took in Shrek 4D, Twister, Revenge of the Mummy (LOVED LOVED this ride!), The Simpsons Ride (we were horrified that little kids went on this ride due to the language and phrases such as 'I'm going to kill you now!') We were really looking forward to Rip, Ride, Rock It but quickly discovered that I wasn't going to fit on the ride. I was bummed as I had not heard that this one was questionable... My sister seemed a bit relieved because although she loves coasters, this one seemed to make her more than a little nervous

The sky turned black so we once again made our way to the water taxis. We found that they were not operating because lightning had been seen in the area. So we had to choose between hanging out at CityWalk (not really our cup of tea) and hoofing it back via the pathway. We decided to walk and oh my it seemed like the never-ending walk to hell. It was so hot and I was SO tired... but eventually we made it back to RPH.

We grabbed a quick dinner at Jakes again. We were happier with our choices of buffalo chicken sliders (Candice) and I had the blue plate special of the day which was BBQ Pulled Chicken sandwich.

We made a quick stop at the concierge desk to find out the options for transportation to WDW just in case we decide we want to make the trip... :thumbsup2

The fabulous concierge guy told us that he could get us a ride in a sedan for about $40 each way (plus tip) or a Mears shuttle for $19 per person round trip. He pointed out that the Mears shuttle was not really convenient because of the times they pick up/drop off. He then said that it might be better for us to rent a car for the day. So we walked over to the Hertz counter and were told that if we wanted a car for 10am, we could have the car for $50 for the entire day. Woohooo!!! I was so excited because we were going to WDW!!!! I knew I'd find a way to get over there because how the hell could I be in Orlando and not stop by to see my favorite Mouse! :smickey:

Day 3...

So we get to the Hertz counter a bit before 10am and are ready to rent our car. We hear the staff talking about a car shortage and start to panic. Eventually we get up the the counter and are told that the earliest we will have a car would be noon. We are bummed but give the guy my cell phone number and tell him we would wait for him to call when a car comes in. Guess what? He never called... but around 11 we decide that if we aren't physically in a car by noon, we're just going to hang by the pool and relax.

We ended up spending the entire day at the pool! We hid under the gigantic umbrella and slathered on the sunscreen before we hit the pool. We loved the poolside service of food and drinks and found the staff to be super nice. :beach:

At the end of the day, about 5pm, my ADD kicked in and had to find something to do. We went over to Margaritaville for burgers and found it to be a nice place to relax.

Next Up... Our last day at Universal Studios Orlando Resort!

Hi there!

We reserved Mears through our Southwest package. But it was super easy once we arrived at the airport. We walked up to the desk, gave them our name and confirmation number, and were on a van within 15 or so minutes. The ride stopped at several hotels but luckily the RPH was the first.

The return trip to the airport was simple too. The only "complaint" we had was that we were the first pick up on the return trip and had to take a tour of the more "inner city" areas of Orlando. We've never been outside of WDW before so it was a bit of a shock to see some of the less stellar hotels.

All in all, I'd definitely recommend using Mears. I had also used Tiffany Town Car service back in the day and although I liked them, I didn't feel like the extra money was worth it.

Enjoy your trip!:cool1:

And off we go...

Day 4 (Final Day!)

We started super early this morning and was in WWoHP just before 8am. There were quite a few people around Hogsmeade this morning as we made our way to Hogwarts.

Our wait for The Forbidden Journey was a bit longer today but we stayed together in the main line and took in all of the details. The total wait time was around 20 minutes and when I finally took my seat in the outside seat of the car, I pulled the restraint down as far as I could. A TM walked over and said "you have two clicks to go and I can't help you." I was a bit shocked since a couple days before the TM was more than helpful. I responded with, "I was on the ride 2 days ago without a problem, I might need you to push while I pull on it." I was having a hard time, not because it was tight, but because it felt strange to push on the restraint while I was in the seat. I couldn't get situated. The TM helped a tad and once it was at 3 clicks she said, "I'm not sure. You might get hurt." I said, rather loudly because I was annoyed, "I was JUST on this and was fine. It's not even tight!" She just looked away as my car continued to move. We were off and enjoyed the ride a bit more the second time around!

We went over to the Dragon Challenge planning to ride the "other" coaster and discovered that the ride was down. The TM said it was for "annual maintenance"... We were bummed but moved on to have a ButterBeer and watch all the people. We made our way out of Hogsmeade and down to Dr. Doom's FearFall and The Hulk. I was so disappointed by Dr. Doom, it was such a nothing ride.... But we both really loved The Hulk. What an intense ride!

We had to be back to check out by 11 so we made our way out of the park and back to RPH. We checked out and spent the remainder of the day (Mears was picking us up at 4:40) by the pool. Prior to our departure we showered in the locker rooms of The Gymnasium and were impressed by the facilities.

We were at the airport by 5:45ish and took our time browsing through the WDW shop. I took pictures with the Goofy statue and the WDW/Mickey "logo" and then headed through security. Not a big issue there although I was randomly selected for an explosive screening. The TSA agent swabbed my hands telling me that they were looking for explosives and obviously I had none so I was quickly sent on my way.

Our flight was supposed to take off at 7:30 but by 6:30 we learned that there would be a delay. Our plane eventually took off at 9:50 which made our arrival in Manchester significantly later.

All in all, it was a great trip and we had an amazing time hanging out together! I plan to put together a quick list of things I want to share next so stay tuned!

Here are some of our final thoughts about our trip to Universal Studios.

1. Florida is hot in June. We typically go to Florida in the fall/winter season (gotta love the lower prices and even lower crowds) so this was a bit warmer than I had ever experienced. Because of the temps, I'm glad we went with an onsite hotel as we really took advantage of the pools and the EE for WWoHP which would have been impossible if we had stayed offsite.

2. The pool staff at the RPH were exemplary. I was in awe of the complimentary ice water (with or without lemon/orange slices), free newspapers and magazines, free sunscreen, poolside activities, and the food/drinks served right to your chairs. Every single TM we met by the pool was so attentive, nice, and friendly I thought we were in WDW after all. :)

3. The food options, outside the pool bar, at the RPH stunk. I'm not interested in the gourmet food (or prices) at Chop Choup. I found the offerings at Jakes and The Islands to leave a lot to be desired as well.

4. Overall I found US and IOA to be clean and well maintained. The area outside the loading dock at The Hulk, however, looked like someone had turned a dumpster over. The place was covered in trash, it was disgusting!

5. Although I liked many of the rides (The Hulk, The Forbidden Journey, Jurassic Park, and The Revenge of the Mummy), we didn't feel like there was nearly enough to do in US/IOA to make it a "vacation destination". Now, if you are into shows and want to do every last thing they offered, maybe you'd feel differently. But, for what we wanted, we could have been very happy doing a day or maybe a day and a half here.

6. I felt like this park would have been a complete and total waste if we had brought our kids along. Many of the rides would have been too intense, inappropriate, or just plain scary for our kids. My daughter and my oldest nephew are huge HP fans and would love to go but we decided, early in our trip, that it would be at least a few years before we brought them.

7. The frozen ButterBeer was very yummy. Especially the free one I got on our last day. (Oh how I wish I had gotten that guy's name... LOL!)

8. The crowds, at times, were downright painful. If we had not had the "express pass" (thanks to our onsite hotel stay), we would have been miserable.

9. I'm not sure how I forgot to enter them in the Trip Report but we also went on Popeye's Bilge Rat Barge and Rip Saw Falls. We found both of them to be just okay and much prefer the Disney versions - Kali River Rapids and Splash Mountain.

10. I'm a Disney girl through and through. I enjoyed WWoHP immensely but don't see myself returning any time soon. I think we'll take the kids when they are teens so they can experience it but I'm planning on 1 day for that experience!

Next up? Planning our trips to Disney's Beach Club Resort in August (me, my DH, and DD9) and our January trip to TBD (my family, my sister's family, my parents, and more!) :cool1:
