Since we already had an annual pass and had heard such positive things about the first week of December we decided to do a trip on the cheap with 6 nights in an OKW studio.
The notable...
--------------------------------------
THE GOOD:
Disney's Old Key West Resort - Quiet, spacious, well staffed/cared for and a great value.
Illuminations Holiday Finale - They shoot so many shells up at one time it's hard for your brain to process it all. Simply breathtaking and not to be missed.
SSR Grand Villa - Stopped by for a quick look and we were blown away. It's true, you get what you pay for.
Earl of Sandwich at DD - A great meal value at WDW. (And they said it coudn't be done.)
Bringing your own sheets - Thanks to the suggestions of others on these boards we put our own fitted sheet on top of the existing one and then put the extra top sheet on top of the blanket. Wonderful.
Restaurant Marrakesh - Stopped in here on a whim. Try the couscous.
Mickey's Very Merry Xmas - Mickey's Christmas Carol Show, Holiday parade and delish cookies.
Bahama Breeze - Don't have these out West yet but had heard good things from other DISers so we tried it on the way back to the airport. Gotta' love that Aruba Red on draft.
Gingerbread House Decorating - Beach Club hosted this fun activity for the kids and everyone seemed to really enjoy it.
THE BAD:
Disabled access room number 5010 at OKW - Don't get me started.
Holiday display at BWV - Sorry, but compared to Y&BC this looked like a 'half-baked' effort done by a bunch of grade-school kids not a pastry chef.
Mickey's (Not So) Merry Xmas Party - Crowded without anything truly special like the holiday overlays of Small World or Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. In my opinion a mediocre value at best.
Pre-teen Cheerleader Invasion - I'm so thankful to have only boys.
Crowds - Obviously one of you leaked that this is a nice time of year to go. Everyone sure seems to have caught on.
Jim Caviezel - In our performance, "Jesus" stumbled his way through the scripture readings of the Candlight Processional and then tacked on a plug for Mel Gibson's movie at the end. Unforgivable.
Flimsy Paper APs - Eh, what should I expect for $400?
THE UGLY:
Big Fake Trees - Appearantly it's impossible to have real Christmas trees in Florida. At Disneyland you can smell the tree from the castle. Dissapointing.
-----------------------------------
The over-all impression we got was that early December is somewhat over-rated at WDW (and somewhat under-rated at the DLR) and we probably won't be going back at this time again. I think we'd do better to use our points at the Food & Wine Festival instead.
