The Firefighters saved our home & DL trip

Some of you may have heard about the "machine gun wildfire" here in Herriman on the National news. That fire was in my backyard. The flames came withing 30 feet of my home. We were evacuated to a local High School for our safety on Sunday night and were just allowed back home tonight. Sunday Night while we were at the High School my 5 year old son asked if we were still going to DL. Tearfully I told him "I dont know, I just dont know" Obviously I was more concerened about my home than our DL trip but he wasnt aware of the situation. He got a look of dissapointment on his face but he hugged my leg and said "love you daddy" and ran off to play with the other kids. The next morning we were watching the local news showing pics of the damage from a helicopter and amazingly there was our house still standing. Our back yard is toast but our house is just fine. I then went and told my little boy "yes, were still going to Disneyland" His face lit up and he shouted "YAY" My Wife and I started crying again. Never before have I ever been so excited to tell my little boy that we were going to Disneyland. Thanks to all the brave firefighters for risking their lives to save our homes and property. Trust me if I could afford it Id take you all with us to DL. We love you all. Just thought Id share.

We came home from Disneyland on Sunday to that fire. We live one block away from the evacuation area. We probably should have stayed elsewhere that night (the smoke inhalation kicked our butts!), in fact all of our neighbors took off, but after being gone for 9 nights to SoCal, we just wanted to sleep in our own beds. We figured if the evacuation area expanded, we were already packed and would just throw everything in my truck and book it out of there.

I tried taking some pictures of it as it came over the ridge, I'll have to see how they turned out and post them for everyone to see what we were dealing with!

In the back of my mind, I was kind of hoping that it would burn down my house...then we would just move to SoCal so we could visit DL more often!

Trust me, the biggest natural disaster we have in So. Cal is not earthquakes, but wildfires. We've had very destructive wildfires in the last few years. You'd be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. However, you would be closer to DL.

Sweet story. Glad your family and your home are OK. We were in the path of the smoke (WJ) and it was awful. You have all been in our thoughts and prayers for several days. Enjoy your trip. It will be even more magical because of what you've been through this week.

I'm so glad your house was spared. Today the apartment complex behind my workplace caught fire and 3 apartments were completely destroyed. I can't begin to imagine how awful it would be to lose everything you have.

Glad your home is ok and you can still go on your trip. We had a huge fire in my hometown of San Bruno, Ca 2 weeks ago today due to a Gas explosion and I have a lot of friends affected by that fire or fighting the fire and I know how you feel about the gratitude of all their hard work.

So happy that your home is ok. I have a friend in the guard at Camp Williams that had to pull security because a few bad apples tried looting the houses up there. I'm across the freeway in Traverse Mountain and Seeing the smoke and fire were horrible.
