Captain's Log Stardate 10.15.04
Well..it started off as an interesting morning. After we all got up and had breakfast, lovingly and well prepared by DGrandma, we decided to make a trip to Frankenmuth. Michigan's very own "Little Bavaria". DSIL wanted to do some shopping and have a real, honest to goodness Frankenmuth chicken dinner. SO...we bundled up Little Bitty, DS and packed the car with all our crap and set out. Brrr...it was COLD! So cold. As we walked down the streets of Frankenmuth, DSIL sought out antique shops and found nothing she liked. After an hour or so, we ended up in the Frankenmuth Fudge Kitchen, watching the chocolatiers practice their craft. We sampled several kinds of fudge as we watched them create a whole new batch of the Vanilla Pecan fudge. My favorite I think was the Rocky Road, which we took home with us. Well..it didn't make it ALL the way home.
Just part of the way. We ate it on the plane back.
Anyway....after walking around and visiting various antique shops for about two hours, we ended up at the The Bavarian Inn ,just in time for lunch. There was quite a crowd in the main dining room and the hostess wasn't sure if there was room for the six of us plus the two strollers. SO...she graciously squired us off to one side to 'Tiny's Room'. 'Tiny's Room' is the favorite room of Bavarian Inn founder Tiny Zehnder (who also own's Zehnder's across the street, oddly enough). It's filled with Bavarian stuff (lederhosen, etc) as well as some of Tiny's personal stuff (class yearbooks, pictures, etc).We ordered the family chicken dinner and oohwow. That was the BEST chicken I have eaten in my entire life. The skin was crisp, with a buttery flavor that just melted in your mouth. The squash was just right. THe mashed potatoes were perfectly mashed. The gravy was just thick enough with no floury taste like you get at some resteraunts. And the waitresses were cheerful and willing to do anything we needed to get the kidlets situated and happy. It was an amazing experience.
After lunch, we got back into the car and drove to Bronner's ,where we got to meet Mr.Bronner himself
and tell him how wonderful we thought his giant Christmas store was. We'd been there before, on our last trip out to visit the Grandparents. The store is a giant Christmas wonderland, with music playing and decorations, lights, everything you could ever need to create the perfect Christmas all around you. We wandered the store for about 45 min, oohing and aahing over everything. DSIL found an ornament she just HAD to have:A stand with three balls, each containing either pure gold, ground frankincense or pure myrrh. DMIL found a chenille snowman and I got a china lady dressed in a purple dress with a fuzzy feather boa and a big red hat . She was so cute I couldn't pass her up. We picked up an ornament that DH promised to bring a coworker as well as an ivory glass ball stamped with the seal of the U.S. Navy for our next door neighbor, a retired naval officer.
Finally, after the long day was done, we made it back to the Grandparents place for a supper of homemade chicken soup and turkey sandwiches.
