Rather than speculate what Doc is saying, perhaps this would be a good time to let her clear up what she was referring to.

I think if people are ready for the responsibility of a pet, they are the ones that will know that. Apparently the "Easter Bunny" knew they were ready for a family pet and chose a bunny. I think it's nice that the OP is asking if anyone has one and is getting advice rather than just shoving the bunny to the family members and say, here - take care of it.

I was reading Doc's response as - why do people give these types of pets at holiday's times only to be chucked off to someone else or abandoned. If that wasn't the reference she was making, perhaps she could clear that up on her own. If she doesn't want to, then let it rest. I don't think the OP has made any reason that they will not take care of the bunny and will be chucking it just because they got a bunny for easter. Would this be handled differently from other posters if it wasn't easter? Probably! Sad....

I hope you enjoy your bunny. I have heard they can be nice companions as well. I would call your local vet though to get the best advice.

I am truly sorry that I even began this post. I have read many posts of other crazy topics and thought it would be a good way for others who have or had rabbits to help me out. The care of rabbits vary at each place you research. As you can read, cherrios vs not cherrios, wire cage vs not wire cage, lettuce?, carrots? , spay,neuter,...the list goes on. Alright, Alright consider my 40 year old hands "spanked" for not finding out the correct answer BEFORE the bunny came! The fact of the matter is a baby bunny is at my house and we love it! Thank you to everyone who gave me some insite on caring for it!

Don't be sorry! I loved my rabbits too, and being given the opportunity to "help" another rabbit owner was neat for me (and brought back nice memories). Nothing wrong with your post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have NEVER understood people who seem to be completely comfortable "raining on others parades". It baffles me. I think most people who posted replys to your message were happy for you, and that's all that matters. Try to ignore the "scolders"!!

Oh boy! I'm sorry if I offended ANYONE by mentioning that my vet said no cheerios.
To clarify his position (this is not to slam anyone - remember, I had a rabbit), he feels certain animals, a rabbit being one of them really needs to have as close to a natural diet as possible in order to remain as healthy as possible. What do rabbits in the wild eat? Grass, clover, dandelions etc.... They also spend a good deal of the day moving, much more so than if they are in a cage or pen or let out for a while in the house.
Dried pellets in his opinion should be very little of a rabbits diet and cheerios are not meant for rabbits. He told me he wished breeders and pet store owners would stop telling people it is ok to feed them. Now my vet may be a little overly sensitive as far as what animals should and shouldn't eat because he was a vet at the Bronx Zoo.
Honesty I fed my rabbit pellets and dried alfalfa, even some cheerios until he got sick, because that is what the pet store said to feed him. I did change his diet after he got sick. He seemed much healthier as a result. I just thought I'd share my experience of what happened to my rabbit and what helped him. If you notice a decrease or that he/she isn't pooping, call your vet because there may be a hairball blocking his intestinal tract. Remember rabbits don't cough hairballs up.

I'm sorry if I "rained on someone's parade". That was not my intention. I love Buns, I wish I had more info, but it has been a while since I did my bunny-sitting stint. I just want this Bun to have its forever home, and I have seen lots of times when gift pets get sent to the pound because the decision wasn't properly thought through or when the animal does something it's not expected to, such as bunnies do bite, they can also scratch. My boss had a huge scratch across her face one time cuz she startled Elvis (the name of her bunny, lol).

I am happy you have this new addition, and I am glad you are lookign for the info now. I really didn't mean anything personal.

Oh, I don't think you offended anyone! I just was curious as to why one said to give and the vet said not to. That's all!

Our Dutch bunny, Cadbury, is adorable. That said, she does NOT like to be held or picked up. We do pet her a lot, and feed her Timothy hay, rabbit pellets and greens (not too much regular lettuce, though. She doesn't like celery and carrots either.) and give her fresh water every day. Her litter box and cage need to be cleaned frequently. She loves to be out, but we keep her confined to Kari's room, don't have the rest of the house bunny proofed. She doesn't mind the cats and dog looking at her, I have never tried to let them in with her while she is loose, I don't think it is a good idea. She is about 2, and is in good health. I will admit I have not had her spayed.

Last summer DS's friend gave him the rabbit she won at the town festival. "Lil E" is now a full grown Black Satin rabbit and we still think he's great. Not sure a fair is a good place for rabbits but this one at least got a great home. In the warmer weather we'd let him go outside in a puppy corral to get exercise. We'd put it in the shade and put a milk crate in it so he had a hiding place. We kept one water bottle on the kennel and one in his normal cage. His diet is varied he eats 1/3 cup pellets twice a day, and then twice a day he gets a mix of the following romaine (iceberg is the lettuce that is not recommended for rabbits....don't know exactly why), spinach(sparingly), dandelions, clover, celery, carrots, carrot greens, hay (helps reduce the chance of hairballs, and green peppers. Fruits are supposed to be ok as a rare treat and only like a tablespoon a day.

Enrichment is important also (think about the "toys" you see in zoos and on the zoo show on Animal Planet). It's important that the cage be at least 4 times as big as the rabbit will be when fully grown. As for toys that Lil E currently has...hard plastic baby keys, top of a Gatorade bottle, wood blocks (specifically for rabbits), a plastic slinky, and a ball that I bought at an online pet store ( Petco I think). I also do different things with his food sometimes like last night I basically screwed the carrot into the side of the cage so it was suspended and he enjoyed trying to pull it out. He does come in the house in the evenings when we can watch him. He loves to hop up on the furniture and look around then hops down and explores some more. We've blocked off the sofa that is on a wall with a pillow behind the open end so he can't get behind it. He likes to be held but only when he does the approaching....like one night while reading a magazine laying on my bed and hopped on the bed then decided to stretch out on my back.

Now that you're all yawning from this being so long here's a site I used to learn about the care of Lil E Rabbits I think someone on the boards told me about this site. If anyone is interested in getting their own rabbit consider look at your local shelter in the next few weeks as current owners decide they cannot handle their new Easter Rabbit (I'm not flaming but I do know that after the fair left town I started seeing a few rabbits listed in the paper at the shelter) One more thing.....if he doesnt seem to be drinking the water out of the bottle consider a dish until he's older....Lil E had a problem with the one water bottle being too hard for him to use but now he has no problem with it.
