I don't really know anything about twitter, but from what I understand about it, it seems like there are a lot of DIS'ers who would enjoy it.

Can someome explain twitter a little bit to me? It seems like it allows you to kind of announce to whomever is following your tweets what you are up to. Am I right? Does it do this via text messages or what?

It just sort of struck me that a lot of DIS posts are like this and I'm kind of puzzling over the differences between twitter, blogs, posts on message boards, etc.

Any thoughts?

From what I've seen of Twitter it is mostly people announcing their thoughts or activities kind of randomly. The comments are short and you can't really have a discussion.

You can have discussions on Twitter. Just start talking. People who follow you or follow the topics join in. I visit Twitter several times a day, I have many friends from DIS and other boards. Give it a try! Its very simple!

you get 140 characters or less to show your status updates, um, that's basically it. You can reply to others even if they aren't following you and also "re-tweet" their message as your own, citing them in the "tweet"

The good thing is, unlike facebook/myspace, you can follow people without them having to follow you also...so you can get updates from your favorite celebrities, etc. without them having to "add you as a friend"

You can also follow merchants and manufacturers and often get coupon codes for exclusive "Twitter-only" sales and stuff, too. I follow a couple of different companies who sell iPhone accessories and have gotten some really good deals that way.

If you choose to follow a company to get sale alerts or something, do you actually have to visit twitter.com to see the alerts? Or do they come to your email? I've tried to sign up for different things, but I never quite understood how I was supposed to receive the information.
