Here ya’ go…
Dog-Cave2.jpg

I spend an inordinate amount of time in here and have found it to be quite comfortable. As fellow members of the DDC, y’all are welcome to join me (but I’d advise against it :lmao:)

I just wanna be your dog!! :rotfl::rotfl2:

OK - will all this DVC talk going around....does anyone know how the financing works? Approximate rates of interest and terms of the mortgage?

Unfortunately, for when we vacation - it would look to me that I'd need atleast 300+ points :headache:

NCAA Tournament Update

So with just one game to go, the winners are pretty clear. Tim (that's nice) was the only person to pick UConn as the winner, so if they win the game tomorrow, he's the big winner. No one picked Butler in the finals, so, CJ with his Bay Lake Bombers will take the title.

I was hoping UK would take care of the Huskies (does this mean they get their clothes in the Sears’ huskie section?). Tim it is you and me buddy. If you want to talk smack, I’ll let you go first. Not feeling really confident that Butler will win so I will stay quiet. I would however be glad to reciprocate if you want. It would be ironic that the team that beat Florida won the pool for me by winning the Championship.

Where can you find a point reference chart? :confused3

They do. But now it's only because they're bad people, not bad basketball players (they have been banned from our children's hospital for repeatedly failing to show up after promising to do so)

Dave, I hadn't realized that DVC gets a discount!

This requires another discussion with DW. It's almost a no-brainer now. For our family, a 7 day park-hopper pass is $1500, while a season pass is $2100! If we do one more trip in 12 months, it really saves. The only other factor that we need to consider is "the burning a whole in our pocket factor" getting us to do more trips!

Think of it like a pre-paid vacation club (rather than a time share). If you're going to be taking yearly (or < 2 yearly) vacations to Disney, and you have 2-3 kids, then it pays for itself in 5-6 years (less if you're crazy enough to consider 2 rooms!). If you have time, take the tour. They'll pick you up anywhere and drop you off anywhere :cool1: , and they are not hard sell (it sells itself they say). The kids will get ice cream and it's a good break without taking the bus back to the resort. We bought three years ago and never regretted it! :thumbsup2

Doc,

Thanks for the information. I hate hard sells, and I am in sales :lmao: I don't use those tactics and usually avoid places that do. Is it true if your points are for one resort, you can still stay somewhere else?

Which resort you have as your "home" is only relevant for two things:
1) The amount you pay for your points and maintenance fees
2) When your reservation window opens

You can book your home resort eleven months out. You can book other resorts at (as Christopher corrected me) seven months out. The way most people handle this is to go ahead and book their home resort for the time they want to travel at the 11 month mark. Then try to get a booking where they really want to stay starting at seven months, canceling the original booking as soon as the desired booking comes available.

Actually, you can use your points within the DVC resorts , other than your home resort at 7 months prior to your vacation dates...your check-in date. At 7 months you can group multiple home resort points is needed (if you own at multiple resorts as I do). Trading out. Of the DVC resorts, using the RCI network, or Disney Collection (non-DVC resorts, such as the DL Hotel, or Tokyo DL, or the Cruise line, etc)) can happen outside of the 7 month window.

The home resort priority is 11 months from check-in, for up to 7 nights. If your trip would be longer, then you'd call back to add the extra nights at the appropriate 11 month mark.

If you head over to the DVC boards, there is a link to the points charts at the top right of the screen.

YW... not trying to be a pain in the butt - I just happened to see it right then, and wanted to post while I had a few moments to do so. You were close... :)

DVC offers financing for 1, 5 or 10 year terms. They are expensive at 10.75% for "preferred", or 14.75% for "standard", but at the same time, if you need to finance a timeshare purchase, many lenders are no longer doing that, so the options are reduced to limited. What the difference between preferred and standard is I cannot say.

I have seen some of the posts regarding DVC. In some threads people discuss how it saves them money and others discuss the yearly fees and it sounds extremely expensive. What is the minimum amount for a DVC membership? :surfweb:

DVC certainly is not the cheapest timeshare around - but - IMO - is still one of the best. (My FIL has 8 non-Disney timeshares, through various networks and companies - and none of them have impressed us like DVC has - and that's NOT just because of my love for Disney either).

It IS a timeshare, and you WILL have annual dues, or maintenance fees. Every member contributes based on their level of point ownership. These fees go to cover the costs of staffing the resort, maintenance, insurance, repairs, transportation, property taxes, etc, etc. (Note: All cash guests at the regular resorts also pay these things through their nightly rate & taxes whenever a room is booked and used - you just pay for the nights you use and that's that). These dues do get paid annually, yes. And they do go up over time, but historically (in the 20 years since DVC started), the rate of increase has ranged from 2-3% annually. Cash rates for the WDW resorts have gone up 3-5% annually - for comparison's sake.

Even though it IS a timeshare - it's better, as Chris said, to think of it as pre-paying for your vacation accomodations. Once your initial purchase is paid for, you only pay the dues each year. Most people "break-even" in 5-7 years of trips. However, if you go more often, as we do - you'll break-even faster. We've enjoyed DVC stays 15 times now in the 3+ years we've been members, and we've surpassed the break-even point. It's nice not to have to pay for our accomodations again when we go. Sure I'm paying dues, but they are way less than if I were to take my family of 5 for a single week. All told, all of those visits added up - if I had been paying cash (first we wouldn't have gone as many times - sure we would have gone, but not quite as often), there is nearly a $25,000 difference between what our points cost us, and what we would have paid cash. Even factoring transportation, tickets & food in to the equation I've come out ahead since not all of those trips were full on family trips, but part of the family or solo trips.

As a family of 5, our options increased tremendously in where we can stay. We aren't limited to the few resorts that WDW offers for us all to squeeze in to a tiny hotel room. With a 1 bedroom, we get a washer & dryer in the room, and a full kitchen. We can cook our own meals if we so choose. We also get a 2nd bathroom in the room, at the newest DVC resorts - AKV Kidani and BLT.

One thing to consider of course, is that with DVC, you are paying for accomodations... not tickets, and food. You can't get a package like you can with a typical cash resort package. BUT - as a DVC member you can add the dining plan (if you'd like), for as many as or as few nights as you would like during the stay - it doesn't HAVE to be every night of your stay any longer as the cash resorts are. Many DVC members, like us, choose to order groceries and have them delivered. We can also get the TIW (Tables in Wonderland) card - which saves a bunch of money over using the Dining Plan.

As DVC members we can get an Annual Pass, $100 less than anyone else can too. That is huge when you multiple times in a year. And there are always various discounts and perks available as well, that can help save money on different things - of course - only if you were going to buy or spend money on those items anyway. Example - I can save 50% on the cost of minature golf... one of the things that we'll be doing this week; or get $4 off (basically 10%) of the cost of a water park ticket. Nothing stupendous, but if you would be doing those things anyway... those little perks help.

DVC members can also use the DME service just as regular cash guests, no charge out of pocket (I'm not positive, but it could be included in our dues, just as the cost of DME is actually built in to the nightly rate cash guests pay).

It took us 12 +/- years to finally come around to the decision that the time was right for us to join. I first looked at DVC in 1991, but as a single guy living in CA, it didn't make sense for me. In 1994 on our honeymoon, we toured and I wanted to... but the DW didn't. We toured in 2006 and 2007 before finally signing on the dotted line. Since then - there's been no turning back... and I don't regret it at all. Prior to DVC we never would have gone to WDW and done a no-parks trip... but thanks to DVC - we can. We can enjoy the resort & its' amenities... something we barely even thought to do when we were just there to see the parks. But having gone back so many times - they are great to enjoy, but honestly, aren't all the world has to offer. AND... we'll be back - so going to the parks next time is always an option.

DVC is clearly not for everyone. The purchase price per point continues to rise. I WISH I had been able to pay what Dave did for his points... but I didn't. I joined when I joined, and we paid what we paid. But even still - I don't regret it. We've not only regretted it, but we've added on 7 times, and currently have more than 600 points. We'd like to add the VWL to our portfolio as well, as I want that home resort advantage for December trips - but so far don't have the blessing of the DW yet.

I've recommended it now to about 8 different folks - 3 of whom have joined too. You can join directly through Disney - by purchasing the minimum of 160 (though there have been offers putting the minimum at 100 for certain resorts like Christian got)... or you can purchase a "used" contract via resale. There is no requirement on the number of points to purchase when you go resale. I know several people who picked up a small contract (25 - 30 points) via resale to get in to the system, and then be able to add-on directly from Disney, where the minimums are 25 points cash, or 50 points financed. (Getting past the direct buy-in hurdle has been a concern for numerous folks I know).

I hope all of this helps. If you have any other questions I can help with - you can always PM me - though I'm happy to respond or answer here as well.

WOOO HOOO Eagles beat the Packers today 42-2 in flag football. Michael (my son) had 3 receiving TD's an interception return for a TD and a 2 pt conversion. I am very proud of him. :thumbsup2

Congrats to Michael! :banana::banana::banana:

One other point about DVC. We financed, but haven't completely paid off yet. Hopefully in next 1-2 years. But in the meantime, interest paid can be tax deductible :thumbsup2

I am confident but I'm not cocky. I don't talk to much smack.... I usually just sit here with a smile on my face. :)

I will state this... SOMEONE OWES ME SOME BBQ!!!!! popcorn::popcorn:: popcorn::popcorn::

For our travel agent Dads,

I'm looking for a one-way car rental from Fort Meyers Airport to MCO from June 26-29th. Any tips? You can PM me if you don't want to copy the group. Thanks in advance for the help!

I got a great deal on a one way rental from Clearwater to Orlando last fall on priceline!:thumbsup2

ownage by mistake!
Went to the zoo yesterday! Philadelphia zoo touts themselves as being the "first zoo in the united states" I was never so disappointed! I am not exaggerating when I say they had maybe 30 animals on display and of those 6 were under vet care!(sick or hurt) I don't think I should be able to count the bones on a rhino! Anyone know where their funding comes from And if they have to be accountable!? Who has been to the zoo where they didn't have an elephant? I am no vet but I could see the ribs of the polar bears!:scared1:
They also combined two or three species in one exhibit!
Anyone know how I can call attention to this without being shot?
My biggest problem with this is one they can't call and complain, they can't get a job to buy their own food, and they didn't ask to be there!

Wow! :scared1: Maybe we should seriously reconsider having the DIS Dads Meet there! The airshow at Millville is still available as well as an Iron Pigs game.

well, back from hershey for dd dance comp. they did realy well and i found out that was the last comp. ill see her dance at.:sad1: her last one, i have to work. its our inventory and only a death cert. gets you out of inventory.anyway, it was a great 15 years and she did a great job and had alot of fun doing it.:thumbsup2 i didnt know there was a disney store at hershey. dw got me a present before i got there. im now a proud owner of a farting agent P !!!:lmao:

Dave ~ lt sounds like she's had a great "career". At least you got a gift! :thumbsup2

Wow, that movie looks really interesting. Certainly doesn't seem like a googly eyed date movie, but it'll definitely start a conversation.

It was pretty depressing, but made some very interesting points especially about the amount of homework assigned and how it was a) WAY too much for anyone with extracurricular activities (which, of course, you have to have to get into a "good" college) to finish in a night and b) not correlated with test scores past a certain point.

Well, I wish I was able to have exciting plans this weekend , but...I am on call and got called in early this morning to start the weekend off with a gunshot wound....uuuugh! Can't we all just get along?:rotfl2:

I guess the positive spin on this is that YOU were not the one who got the gunshot wound, right?

Had a great day. A while ago I let my wife convince me to run the Richmond 10K as one fo the 10 special things we're doing for our 10th anniversary (see the theme?). Well today was the day and we ran the whole thing side-by-side. :cool1: 6.2 miles in great weather through what has to be one of the most gorgeous cities in the country. If any of you guys in the mid-atlantic are in to running, you have to get in on this next year.

I used to run stuff like this, and would like to get back into it now that I am more medically able to do it (I was having a big problem with blood sugar crashes during races), but never ran in Richmond. I've done the Army 10-miler a couple of times in the past, and I have to tell you that it is a big morale boost if, at any point, you're able to run by guys wearing "Ranger" t-shirts. Although, of course, they could easily kill you.

That sounds incredibly sad. I would hate for my kids to see a display like that. We're lucky here to have pretty easy access to the National Zoo, and the Reston Zoo, even closer to us, has a lot of hands-on stuff. Like getting to pet some of those animals that graze on the AKL savannahs.

WE are however under the 40 day mark, trying to tweak the dinner resi's and not having much luck...any do the sushi at KONA?

I knew it was cose when i logged on to see my reservation and it was reminding that on May 2 i could do our on-line check in....

Need to add flights to ME? also any suggestions for a "date" night, the kids are going to a kids club......:confused3

Hey! We're going to be there around the same time. I have not tried the sushi at Kona, but the Sushi Bar there gets pretty good reviews from people who have tried it. For a date night, my DW and I like Flying Fish on the Boardwalk, Yachtsman Steakhouse in the Yacht Club Resort, Jiko at AKL, and Narcoossee's and Citricos at the Grand Floridian. Depending on the Kids' Club you're doing, you could stay within reasonable proximity of your kids, or not, if that is your goal :rotfl:

And if I understand your question correctly: Yes, you do need to give Disney your flight information for ME. You should be able to add it through the website, but you can also just call them up and give them the information.

Financing, as has been pointed out, is and has been pretty expensive through Disney. You may want to check out some places like The Timeshare Store (I have no financial relationship with them; I just window-shop occasionally) to see what they offer. You can line up your own financing, too, if you have a bank or a credit union with whom you bank that extends these kinds of loans. Or hit up a rich uncle for the cash :donald:

You "own" the points for a set amount of time. It isn't like buying a house and keeping it in the family for hundreds of years. The Bay Lake Tower property interests end in 2060, but I am not sure how far out Aulani interests are set to expire at this point. Just keep that in mind on the resale market, especially; OKW points will have fewer years of use than AKV or BLT points.

We're renting points on this trip down to see how we like it. Renting is more expensive on a per-year basis than buying, but seems a bit cheaper than a comparable room on property, even with this year's hotel promotion. We're already thinking about renting points for a 2012 trip at AKV.
