Novel Synopsis
from Ken-Follett.com

Published worldwide on 28 September 2010, and debuted at #1 on The New York Times' hardcover fiction bestseller list!

Fall of Giants is a magnificent new historical epic. The first novel in the Century trilogy, it follows the fates of five interrelated families – American, German, Russian, English and Welsh – as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women’s suffrage.

Thirteen-year-old Billy Williams enters a man’s world in the Welsh mining pits…Gus Dewar, an American law student rejected in love, finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson’s White House…two orphaned Russian brothers, Grigori and Lev Peshkov, embark on radically different paths half a world apart when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription and revolution…Billy’s sister, Ethel, a housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts, takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with Walter von Ulrich, a spy at the German Embassy in London….

These characters and many others find their lives inextricably entangled as, in a saga of unfolding drama and intriguing complexity, Fall of Giants moves seamlessly from Washington to St. Petersburg, from the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty.

As always with Ken, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion. It is destined to be a new classic.

In future volumes of the Century trilogy, subsequent generations of the same families will travel through the great events of the rest of the twentieth century, changing themselves – and the century itself. With passion and the hand of a master, Ken brings us into a world we thought we knew, but now will never seem the same again.

Author Notes

Ken Follett is one of the world’s best-loved novelists. He has sold more than 100 million copies. His last book, World Without End, went straight to the No.1 position on bestseller lists in the USA, Spain, Italy, Germany and France.

He burst into the book world in 1978 with Eye of the Needle, a taut and original thriller with a memorable woman character in the central role. The book won the Edgar award and became an outstanding film starring Kate Nelligan and Donald Sutherland.

He went on to write four more best-selling thrillers: Triple; The Key to Rebecca; The Man from St Petersburg; and Lie Down with Lions. Cliff Robertson and David Soul starred in the miniseries of The Key to Rebecca. In 1994 Timothy Dalton, Omar Sharif and Marg Helgenberger starred in the miniseries of Lie Down with Lions.

He also wrote On Wings of Eagles, the true story of how two employees of Ross Perot were rescued from Iran during the revolution of 1979. This book was made into a miniseries with Richard Crenna as Ross Perot and Burt Lancaster as Colonel 'Bull' Simons.

He then surprised readers by radically changing course with The Pillars of the Earth, a novel about building a cathedral in the Middle Ages. Published in September 1989 to rave reviews, it was on the New York Times bestseller list for eighteen weeks. It also reached the No. 1 position on lists in Canada, Great Britain and Italy, and was on the German bestseller list for six years.

Book Club Discussions

One of the best parts about the DIS Unplugged Book Club is that we can share ideas about our reading here online. In order to keep our discussions moving, I will post conversation starters about each section. Feel free to post a reply with your thoughts or other ideas you had while reading that relate to a topic of your own.

If you read ahead of the above schedule, please change the text color to white so you do not give away parts of the plot that the rest of us have not read. Remember, your participation in the discussion will make this a more rewarding experience. Post away! Don't feel as if you need to wait for me to bring up a topic to discuss it. This is your group and there isn't such a thing as a reply that is too little or too big!

Discussion Point 1 - What Do You Already Know?

I have never joined a book club before and see this as an excellent opportunity to join one. I just got interested in reading novels again after completing college and getting a Kindle. Not to steer this off topic too much, but what does everyone think of the Kindle price for this book? $19.99 seems extreme to me and I know it creating a lot of discussion at amazon's website.

My problem with this book is solely the $19.99 price for the book on Kindle. I know $12.99 is becoming more of an accepted price, but $19.99 is way out there. I still want to read the book, but I'll probably wait until the price drops a lot. I'm trying to "vote" against the Agency Model with my pocketbook, I guess. :)

Enjoy the book everybody!

Agreed. I will probably request it at the library though. :thumbsup2

If purchased in the book store, this title carries a price of $36.00

The paper version of the book can be purchased for the discounted price of $19.99 in many locations, but it's the same price as the Kindle version.

Unfortunately, I think this is just the beginning of the new pricing model for Kindle books.

As the book is over 1000 pages, it seems that the Kindle version is going to much easier to hold, carry and transport.

Happy reading.

Just purchased the Kindle Edition and have it downloaded to the iPhone. This is looking like a really good read! Flying (to WDW) on Sunday, so I'll really get started reading this weekend.

Thank you!

I'm in too! I have just started reading it and am enjoying it. I'm getting very well developed wrist muscles from holding it up though (haven't got a kindle :sad2:).

Seems like I got a bargain from UK Amazon - it was £9.00 when I ordered it ($14.25) but I think it's £10 now - still not too bad - couldn't wait for it to come out in paperback!

Hmm. I'll have to see if I can get a hold of the $19.99 one. This is another 'wait 300 days +' on the Atlanta library catalog at the moment. :headache:

I wish I had a Kindle. I don't really want to carry around a 1000 page book. :rotfl:

The paperback is out already? :scared1: That seems fast! I wish I saw it in the store. They only had the hardcover.

Oooh ... I'd thought Kevin meant the paper version as in the non-Kindle version? Paperback would be nifty, though.

We need a Kevin clarification. :lmao:

I think you're absolutely right about the price wars for Kindle only warming up. :( I miss the good old $9.99 or less for all from my Kindle 1 days. These days, I wouldn't consider reading such a weighty tome in the paper version. The Kindle is just too joyous to read and easy to carry.

I meant paper as opposed to the Kindle version.

The paperback version will probably not be out for a year or more.

The second book in the trilogy is due in sometime 2012.

I'd like to join in on this discussion. It will be my first book club ever!
I just picked up the unabridged audio version- since I spend 15-20 hours in the car every week! (that's where I get all of my reading done these days ;))
The audio version is 30 hrs & 44 min long.

The only thing fighting for my "reading" time while I drive is the Podcast!!

I'll try to check in here for discussions as often as possible.

Okeydokey. I won't waste time nosing around for a paperback, then. Though a 1000+ page book in hardcover sounds weighty.

At least I can also use it to stun burglars. ;)

Just downloaded it for my kindle!

I've been in a total reading slump of late so I'm hoping that this will snap me out of it.

I'm stunned by the enormous list of characters -- I'm going to have to figure out a way to print that out so I can refer back to it as I read. I don't think I'm adept enough at using the kindle bookmark feature and I have a feeling I'm going to need to refer to that list a lot!

Excited  Have been wanting to join a book club and now I get the chance. Will be downloading to my kindle.

It is $19.99 on the nook as well. :(

It is lendable on the nook, though.

The wait at our library is at least 3 months for it. Ugh.
