I read this book recently and it changed my life! For the past 3 years I have been working for a woman who is not so nice. On the outside she appears to be a very caring, dedicated soul, but in reality she is selfish, greedy, and petty. Many days I cried on my way home from work due to her insensitive remarks and snide comments. She was never more energetic or upbeat than when she was getting ready to fire someone or planning a "reorganization" of the company.

While she is not quite as bad as the evil character in "The Devil Wears Prada," the book made me realize that life is too short to be "married" to your job or devoting so much energy to someone you dislike and don't respect. I have hated working for her since the beginning, but was afraid I would not find another job that pays near what I currently make - as I am the major breadwinner of the family.

Well, I began putting out feelers on a Wednesday and 10 days later had two job offers. The best part? One job offered me exactly what I make now, the other came in at $3000 per year less....and I ended up taking the LOWER PAYING job because the environment seemed much more friendly.

I am hoping I made the right decision...but I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Congratulations! :woohoo:

Did you see the movie is coming out with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway? It looks goooooood. I'll have to read the book.

Good decision. One spends too much time at work to have to take the stress of it home.

You know, I am in the same boat right now. And I live in a rural area, so finding something comparable to the level I'm at now just doesn't seem easy. This whole weekend I've pondered looking for something new. You just gave me the inspiration to go for it. I don't know that I'll find something as quickly as you, but I'm going to start putting out feelers.

Why is it that some women can't stand for other women to succeed? I always enjoyed working for a male supervisor - they never tried to hold me back.

I saw the trailer for the movie last week. It looked hilarious. The book was actually quite funny and a bit over the top...but some of the incidents in the book hit really close to home. Andrea's description of her heart racing when her phone rang, knowing it was her boss, was right on!

As I kept telling myself, it doesn't hurt to look. If all else fails, we can sell the house, move to Fl, and work at WDW!

Congratulations! I have no doubt you've made a good decision. :thumbsup2

One of my co-workers gave me that book just about a month after I started working at my current job. I'm an assistant to a woman who, while maybe not AS bad as the "devil" in question, certainly has her own....personality, shall we say? My co-worker couldn't wait until I "settled" into my role in the office before giving me the good read, knowing what I'd have to put up with. (And in case you don't believe me, here's two examples:

1 - For Adminstrative Professional's Day, she gave me a paperweight page holder. Not wrapped or anything, just gave it to me and told me it was so I could type faster for her.

2 - She had surgery earlier this year and informed the staff that, even though the doctor didn't want her back at work until 8 weeks or so afterwards, she WOULD be coming back sooner, and if she couldn't walk, she'd just have me push her around in her chair. All day.)

I could go on and on, but, bottom line, I'm ready for a change too. Methinks you might've planted the seeds of motivation for me too!! :teeth:

Congratulations! No one should ever have to work for someone who makes them miserable. We are in control of our lives and can make changes with effort and creative thinking.

I recently tried to read The Devil Wears Prada but found it to be poorly written. I am looking forward to seeing the movie in a couple of weeks.
