The Daily Grind ~ 1/18/13

I'm sorry to read your child is struggling with Algebra. I totally sympathize as my son struggled so much in geometry last year to get a low C(he is in Algebra 2 this year and has an A)that we had to get a tutor three times a week-more if he had a test and even then, he failed tests.......part of the problem was he and the teacher did not communicate. When I asked her questions, she told me my son had to ask her--and even if he asked for help, she might not help him. What in the World??? I hope you get it worked out.:sad2:
It was a learning experience for us, that is for sure.

I have had enough Algebra:crazy2:, so we decided to call it a night and I cracked open a bottle of wine. I have an email request into the teacher(she said she would monitor her email this weekend) to see if she will supply answers to the equations she sent home. It would really be helpful to this math challenged mom to know that we are coming up with the right answers to these problems so that I know Julia understands how to answer them correctly.

hope you get the answers....I'll be getting Megan a tutor if she has issues with algebra...I totally didn't get it in middle school, know I wouldn't understand it now with my old, tired brain!

I am totally frustrated right now. She took the exit exam for this semester and did not score a proficient. I thought that they would send home that test so we could figure out what she did wrong and go from there. Nope! It is school policy not to give students thier final exams.:confused3 So instead we got a 29 question exit exam additional review, but no answers to go along with it. There are at least 2 questions so far that neither Julia nor I have any clue as how to approach even beginning to solve them. She has a B for the term, I just don't get this!

OH no!! I hope she will send them.. is this Algebra I??? If you can scan them and email them I will take a look at them.. between DS, DH and myself we can figure it out...
Our teacher's use Algebra that works program... they send the answers home to the problems they do.. but NOT how to do them... then the grade is given based on the work showed and that you got the correct answer (if I remember correctly.. that was 4-5 years ago for the kids)...

 at least you have some wine to calm your nerves!!
We never see the kids' tests or finals..and it frustrates me because I can help reveiw the problems with them..but what they found is the same tests were being used over again and the kids were selling the answers.. :sad2:

Yes it is Algebra I. I am giving the teacher awhile to email me back, that seems fair as it is the weekend and she does have a life outside of work. I am trying to be fair and reasonable, but if Julia does not pass this exit exam she will either have to attend night school or summer school, which has her really stressed and freaked out.
Yes the same tests are given each year and that is why we do not get them, I am sort of okay with that, well at least I understand that they do not want to have to make up a new test every year. I just wish that the system in general would just understand that many of us parents do not use Algebra in everyday life or that the way they teach it is sooo different from what we learned. Would it be that difficult to provide us with the support we need as parents to help our children?

Oh, I totally understand and know exactly what you are talking back... but if you need any help please let me know... I'm not a pro...but having had 4 through it already and one to go through it in the next few years, I'm willing to give it a go...

Thanks Nan! I will keep that in mind, Josh is pretty good with math also and I know he is willing to help too!

Feel free to send some problems to me if you need help as well. Math was always my best subject and I tutored a number of teacher's children when I was working. And if I am not sure of it my brother who tutors college math and lives here would definitely be able to do it.

Thanks Rebecca! We got through about 10 problems last night that Julia is sure she has the correct answers and understands the concept. We are going to tackle some more of them today. Hopefully there are not many that we can't figure out.

I will definately keep you and Nan in mind if we get stuck.

I am so grateful to both of you for your support!

should we have a math challange instead of LO one??
I'm curious what the problems are?? could you post a couple
I'm wondering how my math is now (got an A in college in it)

Okay here are a couple:

If g(x)=4x-3 and find g(x) =-43

and my favorite word problems...

Linda Sue is a stunt pilot, but she has found she can't make a living doing stunts.

So she has bought a transport plane from her friend Philip. He agrees to help her set up her business. He has two customers he no longer has time to serve and suggests that she work for them, delivering their merchandise.

-Charley's Chicken Feed packages its products in containers that weigh 40 pounds and 2 cubic feet in volume. Philip has been charging $2.20 a container.

-Careful Calculators packages its materials in cartons that weigh 50 pounds and are 3 cubic feet in vlume. Philip has been charging $3.00 per carton.

-The plane can hold a maximum volume of 2000 cubic feet of cargo, it can carry a maximum of 37,000 pounds and it cannot carry more than 400 packages of Careful Calculators.

Charley's Chicken Feed and Careful Calculators have both told Linda Sue that she can have as uch business as she can handle, and the same flight route serves both customer's needs. Of course, Linda wants to maximize the money she gets per flight, so she can spend more time on stunt flying.

a) use variables to describe the constraints on what Linda Sue can carry. Be sure to clearly define what each variable represents.

b) Sketch the feasible reagion for Linda Sue's situation.

c) Graph the profit line.

d) Find the combination of chicken feed and calculators that Linda Sue should carry in order to maximize her income. Then give the maximum she can make while satisfying her constraints.

Just a side note, the first problem we are unsure of the answer. The second we have not tackled yet.

Cassey,

for the first one I got x = -10.

I will work on the awesome word problems around lunch time.. Those things a horrible... I have to have complete silence for word problems!! LOL

I'm lost. Hahaha. I cannot solve for x to save my life. Luckily I live with a math genius. So no homework help for me. :) but in turn I get the first grader who magically forgets how to do anything!

:cool1::cool1: That is the answer Julia came up with. Thanks for doing this out, it makes me feel so much better.

She is going to tackle the word problem tomorrow, we spent today working on graphing inequalites, equations and functions, which Josh will be checking when he gets home.

Rachal, I am right there with you! I just can't wrap my head around this for anything. Julia is a great teacher though, she explains the what and why after she completes the problem. I really think she gets this but is just freezing up at the thought of the consequences if she doesn't pass.

Just heard from the teacher, she is going to create and email the list of answers.:worship::worship: I am so thankful that she is willing to do this and I told her so!

That's awesome!!!! I knew she would!!!

I'll still work on the word problem this evening.. I got side tracked w/ decluttering my pattern paper to donate to the school... (got rid of half!)
