The Da Vinci Code

The 'Da Vinci Code' really comes to life if you have actually been to Paris and the Lourve. Brown gives a lot of detail about the city and the Lourve, and this is an important aspect of the novel--almost like another character in the book. I have finally started reading the book, after returning from Paris two weeks ago (my fifth visit in the last few years), and I am only about a hundred pages into the novel, and I am really enjoying it. I like Brown's writing style.

I also really enjoyed this book, as well as Dan Brown's other books. Yes, it is fiction, but not all fiction has to be purely escapist. I love for my entertainment (whether it be books, movies, television) to be smart, funny, witty, or even challenge what I know about something. This book is great for challenging what we know about history, especially religious history- who gets to decide what is included and what isn't.

Another thing I love is the way Brown describes these various paintings, how he brings them to life.

Lisa 98- thanks for the book recs- I am looking for something new to read, and these sound great

I read Da Vinci Code and promptly went out and bought all Dan Brown's other books (including an accidental purchase of poetry by the wrong Dan Brown....)

Loved them all (except the poetry). I think the unusual subject matter in each book got me hooked.

Whoa. Continued reading... pretty crazy stuff in here. Jesus-married? I told my sister I was reading it and she said, "What for?" Hehe. I don't necessarily agree with all that, but it's pretty neat.

I read the "Da Vinci Code" a while back and thought it was pretty interesting but as one poster mentioned seemed to be rushed at the end. .

I was intriqued enough by the whole Mary Magdaline/Holy Grail/Vessel deal that I went out and bought "Holy Grail, Blood Grail" and read that. . .

Well, tried to read it anyway. . . the first couple chapters were okay; about a priest in France who these guys who wrote the book claim may or may not have the "Grail" which is the bones of Mary Magdaline and was the head of the Templers or whatever. .

But then they got into the history and I just couldn't plow through it. . I didn't beleive or disbeleive it and it didn't offend me, it was just written in a very confusing way and referenced so much mideveal history that I didn't know it became a waste of time to keep reading.

Perhaps others might get moreout of it then I did, but I'd recommend getting it at the library and not paying $12 or whatever like I did. . .

I finally finished reading it last night. (Finally? I haven't even had it a week and have had limited time to read. LOL!)

Personally, I really enjoyed it! I agree -- those taking the whole book for fact, don't forget that a) it's a work of fiction, and b) the character who was making so many of the "outrageous claims" turned out to be essentially a lunatic. Remember? ;)

I didn't find it offensive at all. I find it very interesting. I, too, can accept that perhaps Jesus had much more of a life than is chronicled in the Bible. After all, we don't have a journal page entry for every single day of His life. Maybe He was, maybe He wasn't. I don't see why the possibility of Him being married should decrease my faith.

Really, I took this to be about the same level as Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Fun fiction that gets me interested in history and the Truth. And what's wrong with some fiction that gets you thinking? :)

I thought some of the theories were pretty interesting, but overall, I thought the book was pretty forgettable reading. It seemed like Dan Brown was writing it with a screenplay in mind. In fact, all I could think was "I bet Russell Crowe plays the main character".
