The Chanukah Thread

There is a very good Jewish style deli in Orlando in the Dr. Phillips area. Toojays. It's a chain with about 7 or 8 locations around Florida. It's obviously not kosher but some of the items are.

OK.....I am drooling now!!!! Kugel and latkes.....need to go grocery shopping now.
Happy Chanukah and Happy New Year!!!!

Many years ago we split up the holidays and DB and DSIL have always had Chanukah . We are getting together at there house on Monday to celebrate. My SIL makes latkes and the kids play dreidel. This is the first year without my parents, so it will be difficult but they would be very proud of us that we keep on the tradition of getting together as a family..

WOW Kung Pao Kosher Comedy Night sounds wonderful. I am making chinese food on Sunday night ...

As I sit here eating a Christmas cookie (LOL), I am thinking of the latkes my uncle will be making on Sunday at our family gathering.Yummy! I know there will be kamish bread (same as mandel just a different name), brisket, chicken, latkes (but I mentioned that already ;) ). Kugel, I hope and lots of other yummies. My kids are getting a play kitchen and I can't wait to see the look on their faces! Happy holidays, everyone!

I am not Jewish either. Don't know much about the Jewish religion.

I wish all my Dis friends who are though a very Happy Chanukah.

If there is anything you'd like to know, this is probably a good thread to ask it on!

We did a pre-Hannukkah party this past Sunday, since so many family members will be away during the actual holiday. We made lots of latkes - 20 pounds of potatos!!!!!

How do you guys typically do your Brisket?

I found a really yummy-looking crock-pot recipe I might try this year...

We are in the middle of the never ending Hanukkah celebration. Had a big family party last Saturday night (it was the only night all the cousins, aunts and uncles could get together). We are flying to S. Florida on Sunday (the 25th) and celebrating with my Mom and then up to WDW on the 29th - 3rd.

And tomorrow night DW is making brisket and latkes for an early start since we won't be home at all for Hanukkah.

Beats last year. I was in Indonesia the entire time. Tough to find a Kosher deli there....

We're doing Hanukkah at my house. Grandma, parents, brother and my friend are all coming over. I'm making latkes, noodle kugel and matzo ball soup and also serving challah. This is my favorite kugel recipe, everyone loves it.

NOODLE KUGEL

1 lb. cottage cheese
3 oz. cream cheese, softened
2 c. milk
3 eggs
Juice of 1 lemon
3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 pt. sour cream
1 c. yellow raisins
8 oz. med. egg noodles
Cinnamon
Sour cream, garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients except noodles, cinnamon and garnish. Cook noodles in boiling water until tender, drain. Add to mixture and pour into well-buttered 9 x 13 x 2 inch baking dish. Sprinkle top with cinnamon.
Bake 1 hour or until top is light brown. Cut into squares and serve with sour cream. Serves 8 to 10. (Leftover Kugel is excellent cold.)

This looks very similar to the one my grandmother would always make...it was always so tender. Just delicious!

What great timing this year - the first candle lighting and Jews Go To the Movies Day all on the same day! I haven't decided what I'm going to see yet, though.

What I find ironic is that this year, when the first night is on 12/25, is the year many Christians seem to be pushing for total focus on their holiday. I might think it was related, but then I realize that they probably have no clue when Hanukah is, anyway.

I'm not jewish, but I wanted to wish happy Chanukah to everyone else. :wave2:

.

So I'm not the only Jewish kid who grew up figuring out how many movies we could see in one day?

DS was born on 12/26. We were hoping for a 12/25 birthday so we could eat Birthday cake after coming back from the movies :goodvibes

I have to admit this is my first real Chanukah. In my family we would light the menorah but that ws about it. Chanukah is a big deal in DH's family though so they'll have parties and gift exchanges. I'm sure it will be fun but that extra holiday shopping wasn't thrilling.

My cousin and I are getting together over the weekend to make baked latkas. We come from a meditaranean background so latkas are something new and exciting :)
