The best book I ever read . . .

I'm in a book club, so we have great discussions and sometimes even greater reads.

My own personal favorites that I read and reread:

The Stand (Unabridged) Stephen King
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe - Fannie Flag
Incarnations of Immortality - Piers Anthony
Lord of the Rings - Tolkien
Outlander - Diana Gabaldon
The Dragon King Trilogy - Stephen Lawhead
The Harry Potter Series (of course)

and many more!

That's another good one! Have you read any of Fannie Flag's other books? I really like the four or five I've read . . .

And yeah, the Incarnations of Immortality are awesome! I love his take on Satan as a good human being who is trying desperately to do the right thing and then it all get's twisted around or misinterpreted.

I've read "Welcome to the World, Baby Girl" and I think one other that I can't remember the title. Fannie Flag is a great storyteller.

I also liked reading Pier's comments about the books. He's agnostic and it's his vision of God and Satan. The three aspects of Fate is my favorite out of the entire series.

Oooh! I recommend Fannie Flagg too.

I loved the Fate book! I think my favorites were the Satan one and the Nature one.

Welcome to the World Baby Girl is good. Try reading Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man and Dancining in the Rainbow as well . . .

I adore reading, and find myself doing the reading anything thing. Cereal boxes, OLD mags. at waiting rooms etc.

What I don't read often is any science fiction/fantasy or actually most books written post @ WWII Stuck in a bit of the 'english major rut' of classics and major works. I love those books so much, and need to re read some once a year. (Jane Austen, Dickens, to give an idea)

I am awaiting my Kindle, hoping it comes before vacation - now a race since we leave Thurs. - because almost all of my best loved books are free downloads. That was my tipping point, because I use the library a lot and do not feel the need to own the book, but for the price of the ereader I get thousands of books free.

However, I am going to check out some of these books mentioned, especially those enjoyed by several of you.

My favorite children's book is The Giver by Lois Lowry. I recommend it to everyone, I think it's a beautiful story.

I agree with the idea that this is a book everyone should read. But, I differ on the "beautiful" piece. I think it's likely dependent upon your own childhood experiences, but, I found it hauntingly sad. I think it's an amazingly written book that identifies what it's like to be different and feel all alone in your difference.

I simply cannot pick just one book...

Harry Potter Series is just fantastic and spawned numerous readers amongst my nieces and nephews so we are eternally grateful!

Life of Pi - Yann Martel is one of my favourites as is Great Expectations - Dickens... I can read Lord of the Rings over and over again. And when I just want good ol fun reading anything by Anne Rice.

Right now I am reading ((which I have been meaning to read for a few years)) The Book of Negroes - Lawrence Hill and I am having a hard time putting it down. I believe in the USA they changed the title to Someone Knows My Name

Harry Potter is, and will always be, my absolute favorite. It has made such a huge impact in my life and on who I am as a person, and I am forever grateful to JKR for writing something so influential. As for the rest...

My Sister's Keeper- Jodi Picoult
Nineteen Minutes- Jodi Picoult
Plain Truth- Jodi Picoult (See a pattern? I've read almost all her books and I love them)
Looking for Alaska- John Green
Paper Towns- John Green
Memoirs of a Geisha- Arthur Golden
The Lovely Bones- Alice Sebold
The Five People You Meet in Heaven- Mitch Albom
The Glass Castle- Jeannette Walls
A Series of Unfortunate Events- Lemony Snicket (if you have a dry sense of humor, these are absolutely hysterical! He even throws in a few political references, especially towards the end of the series.)
Boy Meets Boy- David Levithan
Keeping You A Secret- Julie Anne Peters

I could go on forever...I love to read :teeth:

It's 7 books (mainly), but Stephen King's The Dark Tower is my favorite story. IMHO, it's the greatest epic of our time. One of the coolest parts of it is the fact that The Stand, Insomnia, Eyes of the Dragon, and Hearts in Atlantis are all side-stories that connect directly to The Dark Tower. Not to mention nearly every book he's ever written touches on the story in some way.

For non-fiction, I love Dress Your Family in Denim and Corduroy by David Sedaris.

Hmm........its hard for me to pick just one favorite........but if my life depended on it I'd say........gah I can't pick one. There are too many. My top 5 would be "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman, "The Stand" by Stephen King, "Rant" by Chuck Palahniuk and the Harry Potter books (I can't pick one, but the best are 3-7).

The only books I've read from the list are Harry Potter and Gone With the Wind. GWTW is a must read....so amazingly detailed. So evocative.

But my favorite book is called Range of Motion by Elizabeth Berg. Her books always make me feel as if I'm listening to a friend tell a story.
