A couple of questions :

If you just want to visit the shops, eat at one of the restuarants and see the fish tanks at Atlantis Resort is it worth doing the official tour or checking it out for yourself ? We don't swim so the beach and pools are not important to us.

Which of the many restuarants at the Atlantis are a good choice for lunch ?

Is it safe to use the taxi service?

Also , has anyone taking the tour of the governer's mansion , steps , etc ? ( I do not know the official names ).

What has been your experience ? Thanks in advance .

I really can't help you too much on some of your questions, but my husband & I were at Atlantis in Dec for 5 days. It was amazing. The digs were wonderful. Food great. Pretty pricy.

nicki dahling,
You can take a cab to Atlantsi $4.00 pp. each way + 1.00 toll bridge. One there you can shop, eat, gamble a see part of the aquaruim for no fee. Even if you take the Atlantis excursion you are not free to use the pool's at Atlantis. We have been to atlantis twice on our own and really enjoyed it. They have a great web site that tells you about "The Dig" and other useful info. here is the link. www.atlantis.com

We just did this on our last visit to Nassau!

The above info is mostly correct, the taxi rides are nice, easy to get and will get you to Atlantis and back ok for $5 each way. Much better than the overloaded boats they use for the official excursion.

Atlantis itself is simply gorgeous!!! Do not miss it if you can!

Now, for the same amount of access as the official excursion, but at your own pace, you can get the wristbands for access to the Dig, and be able to walk around most of the resort. You can find them for $25 at a permanent kiosk in the center of the casino with a moon-like globe hanging over it, called 'the temple of the moon'. Wear very comfortable shoes, it's a long walk and you will get to see most of the beauty of the resort just on the tour path as they connect the different areas above ground. :)

Food and beverages are pricey, but of great quality.

We also have done both excursions. The excursion of Atlantis gave us a better view and some interesting hotel facts, such as those about the "bridge room". A better ferry takes you over to the island, but you catch a crowded ferry back. We got to walk through the pool area and could almost see the beaches. The aquarium is nice, but at $25 per person I think a bit pricey. Deli sandwiches were $8-10 as I recall. There is a nice ice cream shop outside by the marina for a snack, but I wouldn't plan a full meal at the hotel unless you expect to pay alot. The marina is officially off limits, but we enjoyed seeing the huge yachts that were big enough to hold boats, cars, and even a helicopter. The casino is also fun for awhile for adult groups. We prefer to take a taxi and walk around on our own, then catch a taxi back. The taxi is only $1-2 more than the ferry. We also walked to Parliment & the Queen's Staircase (think that is correct names). It is a good 7-8 block walk. Parliment let us go in a look, not alot to see, but didn't see a tour. Street people joined us on our walk to the Staircase, then offered "tour" information but then wanted handouts. Same problem at the top. View is beautiful, but not much else. Five minutes is all you need and the area of town doesn't seem too safe to be walking in retrospect. We asked taxi's for ride back to pier, but they all seemed to be occupied with roundtrip guests and couldn't squeeze us all in so we walked back. Could be because the street person told them we wouldn't tip him for his unsolicited speal. Excursion might be best way to go for this part of town.
