I agree with the other posters that this "Race" is not a real race...i found myself VERY frustrated at the constant places to catch up with everyone else...It was appropriate when they were changing countries or starting each leg of the race but once a leg is started, they should not keep having stops where everyone catches up! Especially the last leg...I understand the drama of wanting them to be close but the way the race is set up it makes it luck, rather than skill, to win...i mean even the flight to Miami would have put them on equal footing again, esp if ron and kelly would not have gotten lost...i mean realistically, rob/amber and ron/kelley had a 5-8 hour lead over u/j after the non-elim round which meant nothing!!! In the end it was like u/j were barely punished for coming in last because they had so much time to catch up with everyone else. That is why I will not be watching the Amazing Race anymore. The won't let the contestants really race...they just let the teams that work hard and get ahead be punished....
Of course this is not a real race. It is a race designed to be a TV show. Complete with sponsors. Those sponsors want some kind of gaurantee that the show can pull in viewers each week.
I have watched the Amazing Race since the very 1st episode, and I have not missed an episode since. During the 1st season, yes, I got frustrated at the "catch ups". It really did not seem fair to the team that was out in front. But, part way into the 2nd season, I realized, the show was not just about the racers. It was also about US, the viewer's. We had our favorite teams, and we had our least favorite teams. We rooted for our faves to pull ahead, and we prayed that the teams we did not like fell behind. The "catch ups" caused us to tune in every week. Why? Because the 1st team checking into the pit stop this week, could be the last team being eliminated next week.
Since Rob and Amber were not liked by many, I will use them as an example. How many Romber haters would of continued to watch week after week if they were in 1st place the 1st week, and their lead just kept getting bigger and bigger? No catch up. Just keep moving. There is no suspense in that. By the 4th or 5th week, they would have about a 3 day lead on the next team, we would stop watching. It would be clear from the 5th epeisode who will win the million.
The Amazing Race has the perfect combination for a successful show. They have drama, action, comedy, and SUSPENSE. The suspense is, every week it is a BRAND new race.
Trust me, if AR got rid of the catch ups, the ratings would plummet.
It is not a race for the contestants, It is a race for US, the viewers. We are what brings in the money.
