I watched the Alfred E. Smith dinner speeches, live last night with John McCain and Obama. McCain was hysterical. He was so funny, and delivered his lines with such a deadpan expression that, he could be a comedian after he ends his term in the White House. Obama; okay, but not nearly as funny. Not at ease with laughing at himself at all. He even laughed at his own jokes.

I've always said that McCain is a funny guy. To this day he remains one of my very favorite SNL hosts. That entire episode was hilarious.

And of course you think McCain was funnier...he's your guy. I thought they were both funny, particularly since I think it's fair to say they likely did not write their own material.

I thought Obama's jokes were funny but he didn't so comfortable in that role of joke teller.

I wish McCain would show this side of him more often so he wouldn't come off as a grumpy old man that some think he is.

I just caught the end of Obama's speech. Wish I had seen the whole thing. Is there a link?

I thought it was hilarious too....especially when McCain said that Oprah has a pet name for Obama and that is "The One" and McCain has a pet name for him too and that is "That One"...and Obama has a pet name for McCain and that is "George Bush". :rotfl:

I don't think Obama delivered the punchlines as well, but it was great line when he asked where his "Greek columns were".....:rotfl2:

It was a nice break to see them both up there not only making jokes about each other, but themselves.:thumbsup2

Obama: My first name "Barack" is Swahili for "That One". My middle name was given to me by someone who obviously never thought i'd be running for the presidency.

Obama (to Alfred Smith): I never knew your grandfather, but from what Sen. McCain tells me of their childhood together paling around during prohibition, he was a great guy (paraphrased).

Obama: McCain's campaign advisers have said that if the campaign keeps talking about economics, then they lose...so tonight...I'd like to talk about the economy.

Loved it! :goodvibes

Was nice to see their personalities and their great sense of humor shine. :thumbsup2

McCain introduced Obama, who at one point joked that he was confused. :rotfl2:

"I was originally told the venue would be Yankee Stadium,” he said. “Can somebody tell me what happened to the Greek columns that I requested?"

McCain said that his rival was not fazed by being called, "That one," during the second presidential debate.
"He doesn't mind at all,” McCain said, “in fact, he even has a pet name for me: George Bush

Then Obama turned to the question McCain had been asking as of late:
Who is the real Barack Obama?

Regarding his name, Obama said that “Barack is actually Swahili for ‘that one’. And I got my middle name from somebody who obviously didn't think I’d ever run for President.”

One other thing,” Obama added, “I have never, not once, put lipstick on a pig or a pit bull or myself. Rudy Giuliani, that's one for you. I mean -- who would have thought that a cross-dressing mayor from New York City would have a tough time winning the Republican nomination? It’s shocking. That was a tough primary you had there, John.”

:lmao: :cool1: :rotfl2: :woohoo: :dance3:

I thought that they both were funny and that they really seemed to enjoy poking fun at themselves and each other. Bill and Hillary got a little of the action as well and the shots the camera had of her showed her laughing throughout the entire thing. I liked it.

They were both funny, but I think McCain was more comfortable telling the jokes.

Obama had a few good ones. I roared at the "you can see all the way to the Russian Tea room" comment. I love my Sarah, but I gotta admit, that was good.

However, McCain rocked the house. I laughed the whole way through. He was great.

They were both funny, but I think McCain was more comfortable telling the jokes.

I agree. I wonder why his sense of humor doesn't translate in the debates? In the few times he joked during them, they went over like lead balloons.

I think they were both funny. It felt good to laugh with the candidates about themselves.

The real definition of "love" is "look for good". When you care about someone you look for the good in them. it's hard to do that for someone you don't care for. Understood.

I personally thought they were both good. I thought McCain's speech about Obama was awesome. He was humble and kind. I like that side of him.
