Do economics have anything to do with it? I know Newton MA is a very upscale town. I could not afford to live there. The average price for a house is $699,000.

Who is familiar with the other cities listed? Are they poor? Middle class? Or upscale?

I'm very familiar with Cary, NC, which is basically a suburb of Raleigh. :)

I am familiar with Atlanta and I know that city really varies depending on what part you are in. It has wealthy parts, middle class, and ghettos.

My question is: How do they define a city?

Atlanta covers a metro area with at a minimum 2 counties and three more counties would probably have people saying they are from Atlanta.

The metro Atlanta area has some parts where people live in abject poverty and some where they live in multi-million dollar mansions.

How are we supposed to compare that to Cary, N.C or Thousand Oaks, Calif.
When they have a population area encompassing at least 3 million people then we can talk.

My city (Temecula) is the 16th safest in the state, and the 62nd nationally.

The local talk radio station was discussing this yesterday. This list is based on 2004 statistics. Since then Richmond has a new mayor and a new police chief, so it'll be interesting to see how Richmond rates in a year or two.

Tanuki, I would guess it's anything within the city limits and exclude the counties and suburbs. For example, my mailing address is Richmond but I live in Chesterfield County, so the Richmond stats don't include the suburban counties outside the city limits.

For Atlanta, anything within the city limits is counted but not anything in Fulton or DeKalb Counties that are outside the Atlanta city limits.

From what I understand, Cary, NC is fairly upscale suburban, much like Alpharetta outside of Atlanta.

Well, I've been to Thousand Oaks and it may be safe but there ain't a heck of lot to do there! Maybe that's why it's so safe! :)

I'd be interested to see how this was rated. Newton is very nice and very upscale and they, I'm sure, have an excellent police force but there are some parts of Newton that are very "city" and it's also home to a few colleges, Boston College among others. I would think that maybe we're not getting the full facts here. It's possible that the crimes in the colleges aren't reported as city crimes but it's inevitable that there will be crimes on large college campuses as well as all the apartments housing students.

But in any case, I would love to live in Newton. Their schools are fantastic and it's a nice mix of suburb and city living. I can see why it's so pricey.

I used to live next to Brick Twsp (5th safest) and I would say say, for the most part it was middle class. There were certain lower income sections, and than there were some fabulous million dollar + mansions on the water. It has grown in population by leaps and bounds. Very congested area with strip malls everywhere. I still have friends there and they are always complaining about the traffic.

Troy Michigan is middle to middle-upper income, and varied culturally, with large indian and middle eastern population.

Surprised birmingham is in this list. Birmingham is a large city but not as big as atlanta. I would Figured Memphis, Tn would be in this list.

Live 15 minutes from Camden (but so is Moorestown, NJ which was voted the best place to live in 2005). Camden is at or below poverty level. I have spent a lot of time there (DH used to live there). It does have a lot of crime (drugs and violence). There was a comment made that the findings were based on 2004 statistics and that the homicide rate had dropped by 40% during the first 10 months of 2005. It's amazing how you can have the best and worst cities almost right next to each other.

i go to school in south jersey, not far from camden---i know it does have a lot of crime--i dont go there if i dont have to!

1. Camden, N.J. - Very poor

3. St. Louis - I am guessing they mean East St. Louis. Again very poor. Do you remember in Vacation when then get off the interstate, that was in East St. Louis.

6. Baltimore - Inner city is very poor

8. New Orleans - We know from Katrina that it was very poor

3. Amherst, N.Y. - Affluent suburb of Buffalo

7. Thousand Oaks, Calif. - My cousin lives hear. Very upscale
