Longtime mostly lurker here, Thanks to Dean and others who have posted info regarding locations worth exchanging to. We just returned from a trip to the Royal Islander in Cancun that was fantastic. For those like us who feel the occasional exchange to be OK(didn't mean to start anything), this is a property worth looking into. Unfortunately the Islander is no longer available but it seems you can get the Royal Mayan thru RCI. This is just 2 doors down and just as nice. FYI we requested a 1 BR and got a 2BR, not bad for 160 pts. Any questions please ask and once again thanks

Glad you had a great trip and that I could have helped in some small way. The RM is nice, it's a little older and I think it's getting closer to the end of it's RTU lease. It has some units with poorer views comparatively (lagoon views) that are more often exchanged and frequently given to exchangers. It's still possible to get the Royals through independent exchange companies like SFX at time. Then there's always private exchanges.

Dean, to tap into your knowledge a bit more, what do you think of the practice that at the end of the term they return the cost and add a residual. Is this common in the timeshare industry and does it add to the value of the resorts?

It's not common, the Royals are the only one I know that do. I haven't kept up with what happened with VCI in this regard so I don't know what the return was. IMO, it's a gamble, esp with the economy issues. Realize that not everyone is a participant and those that are often vary in the amount they can expect. I'd post this on TUG under the MX section if you want more info, also do a search there.
