Just wanted to say thanks to many of the regular posters on the transportation forums. In not a small part due to reading here, above the strenuous objections of Mr RachelEllen, I purchased a seat for our 10 month old on our flight returning across that Atlantic yesterday. Several times the turbulance was bad enough that the cabin crew was seated. Just now, I was forwarded this by a chagrined hubby:

I still think the absolute risk to a lap infant is small enough that I in no way look down upon people who travel that way. However, for me, this hit close enough to home that I'm glad we travelled with her in car seat.

That white air turbulance is exactly why my seatbelt is always fastened! There is absolutely no way to predict it...other than another pilot alerting those in planes behind him that it is present. But someone is going to have to go through it before they can tell anyone else about it in order to warn them. That plane hits the white air turbulance and it drops like a stone...usually with no ill effects..well, other than to those who were unrestrained!
If anyone on that flight had been holding a baby, that child would have bounced against the compartment above them...who knows how seriously the child would have been injured.

Good thing to keep in mind everyone. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Not sure I want to take that chance.
