I do have a question about the Internet on board. I know you have to pay for it but reality is all I want to do is be able to text.

Do I have to sign up for the Internet package to text? I know I’m gonna put my phone in airplane mode. I have an iPhone.

But I’ve read reports about people being able to text just with the basic Wi-Fi that’s on the ship that is not something you have to pay for or am I mistaken?

Usually, it is possible to send and receive plain texts, without images or links, using an iPhone while on a Disney ship without using the paid Internet package.

There is no longer an advantage to signing up for the Internet package as soon as you board, so you can see if texting is working for you before making a decision.

You can message people on board using the navigator app.

If you are wanting to text people elsewhere you will have to buy internet or use your phones cellular at sea service.

Texting using ship wifi without buying an internet package will work to other iPhones only, not to Android or other types of phones or messaging services. ( I describe it to my dad as the text messages that show as blue will work; text messages showing up as green will not.).

I could not text like I used to with my I phone. We were on the wish and Treasure. I got it maybe for a day than it logged me out. I went to guess services to see if I could get it back. They gave me wifi for an hour to sign back in. He told me it won’t last and it didn’t. Told me the wifi given to do the app is not enough anymore to text like it used too.

I have an Iphone and was not able to iMessage at all on the Magic without purchasing internet. Occasionally a push notification would come through but I couldn't open them or read anything beyond the preview in the notification.

I have found that iPhone to iPhone texts works on Disney Cruise ships. Sending a text to my wife is easier and faster than using the app. I have gotten woken up by a text alert at sea from a friend texting me that didn't know I was on a ship. But you do not receive and cannot send to a group chat.

iMessage is hit or miss without internet (due to apple randomly logging you out) but WhatsApp (text only) has worked great on all the ships. It is why most sailings even have a WhatsApp Group chat going on during the cruise.
Agree with this and another added benefit of WhatsApp is that it goes across platforms. We used it super successfully with two iphone users and an android user on the Fantasy in December.

We are platinum and have used iMessage every cruise without buying internet from DCL.

What does being Platinum have to do with being able to text? I don’t think it’s one of the perks?

iMessage, Apple to Apple, no photos or links, works mostly OK. Buy if a friend sends you a photo iyoull get kicked off.

Just saying that we have been on a lot of DCL cruises and used iMessage without paid internet every cruise. Others are stating this doesn’t work without paid internet. We have had a different experience on a lot of cruises.

And we have never been kicked off when someone sends a photo. Just can’t load the photo, but iMessage continues to work.

I think the point is did doesn’t anymore. I used to use it all the time too. But the last few times can not use it to text. So no guarantee with out internet now.

We used it with zero issues 4 weeks last year on the fantasy.

Can I ask when you cruised that you had issues because it was working OK in January and February and I was wondering if there was an update on since then?

Also, did you have any luck with WhatsApp?

my contract finished in December last year, but I have never had a problem with WhatsApp or iMessage.
Texting is different to iMessage, so if op wants texting to a non-iPhone, they will need to purchase internet

@simpleohio It depends on who you are trying to text with (are they on the ship with you or on land) and what platform do they use. As @dreamer17555 @sjuncfan and others have pointed out, WhatsApp works across platforms; you can send a message to someone if they use iPhone or something that runs Android. WhatsApp will not require paying for WiFI as long as the messages are text only (no photos or videos). Also, you can send messages to people on the ship with you or people on land.

I couldn’t get it to work in October on the Fantasy or Wish.

We were on the Treasure in February same thing apple booted me off. Was i messaging after first day . I had someone sick at home so asked guest services if I could get it back on. He was the one that told me it wouldn’t last long and he was right it booted me again.

I have a iPhone 14 Plus thought maybe that’s why….i message with my sister who does have iphone

Will have to try the Whatsapp because my sister in law is very sick and really want to stay in the loop at home.

Worked fine for us in September and December on the fantasy last year. iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 15 plus.

Well fingers crossed I can get it to work for our next cruise on the Fantasy in a week and a half. Just in case I will get the WhatsApp. If that doesn’t work I will get a bit of internet to check in.
