Does anyone know who has the best price on the TI84 graphing calculator? It runs around $100 so if anyone knows a better price than that please let me know!

Definitely shop around - I've seen it as low as $89 at Staples when they are having a back to school sale.

Also, I believe the TI83 has the same functionality (less memory and no cord included) and is a little less $$.

I don't know. I just ordered one from Office Depot for $100. For a 7th grader who will more than likely lose it before the year is out (she lost the cheap calculator she had last year until she found it 4 months later). But it is required so I bit the bullet.

I'm a high school math teacher. While the -83 does about the same stuff, fewer and fewer kids have it (and mine was stolen), so most kids and teachers are on the -84. The newest one is the NSpire. Start saving your money as this is the next "must get."

For the -84, I'd look for the Silver Edition. It has a few more features like ACT prep, periodic table, etc. Most kids never really learn the true value of their calculator. There was also an update last year that gives it "pretty print." That's free on the TI website.

Have your child's name engraved on it (we do it for kids who ask). That way it won't wear off like marker. And, as long as the kid doesn't lose it, it will get used--so it's worth the $100 if that's what you pay. If the kid gets 4-5 good years on it, that's $25-20 per year. Not a bad "investment" and by then something better will come along (see NSpire comment above).

Doesn't answer the "where cheapest" question, but I hope it justifies the expense.

I just ordered from Office Depot, the TI84+. The sale price was $114. There was a $20 coupon, and a $15 rebate.

Check out slickdeals, I saw a thread on there where people were getting them for around $60 or $70 from Staples by price matching Target and using a coupon.

I just ordered my daughter's from Walmart-best price I found. Shipping was free but I needed it fast so we did the 1 day shipping for a low $2.97:thumbsup2

Are these fairly new features? DD17 has had one for 5 years and I don't think hers has this. It will integrate though, which is why I got DD11 the 84+Silver too. I figure if she can get through college math with it, it's worth it. DD17 is taking hers to college next week.

Congrats! And any graphing calculator they have should get them through college unless they are going into engineering. I don't know about the older version, but I believe the silver edition really does that stuff (mine's at school).

Thanks.

No engineering for DD17. However, Math is a possible major.

With DD11 it is too early to tell.

Staples has it on sale for $84.99 and there is a coupon in their flyer - 20% off - it's good on calculators and it doesn't exclude sale items. That would make the cost $67.99 + tax. I think that's a pretty good price.

They also have the 84 on sale for $89.99.

Thanks for posting the Staples deal - DS17 has been asking for the TI-84 and I figure he'll need one this year (AP Calculus) and college next year. Using the coupons and rebates the total comes to $69.99 - I'm thrilled!

Yes. A graphing calculator is required for AP Calculus--doesn't matter what level (a more expensive one does not benefit). But you cannot take the AP test (and probably survive the class) without it. My students who have to borrow one consistently are not my best Calc students.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I used the 20% coupon that I printed off the internet for Staples and got the SE edition there. With the the coupon and the $15 rebate I got it for $92 including tax! Not bad considering it sells for about $130 everywhere. The regular 84 would have worked for trig. this year but I didn't want to have to buy the SE edition when she goes off to college next year. So for an extra $16 (with the coupon) I figured it was worth it.

We are heading into year 3 of our TI 84 and my high schoolers sister also borrowed for college math class so we got our money worth.

I see that you are in suburban Chicago--so I am I. I bought one for my dd during the IL tax holiday last weekend. I already had a TI-83, but felt that she needed her own. I think I paid @ $90 for the TI-84 SE. Where can I get it engraved?

Our teachers sent a note that students could engrave them in class.
Otherwise, you could try a place that personalizes items (knives, goblets) for weddings & such.
