Texas anyone??? Live there, visit....

As some of you may know we are looking to move. Somewhere warm and prefferably near the water.

DFIance has a lead in Texas... how is the HOuston area? Where would you recommend a young couple starting out. We are both professionals and would like a bit of a more upscale area...looking to rent for a while first...

I wouldn't recommend Houston unless you like it hot and wet.

If you're still with me, it would depend where you work as to where I would recommend you settle.

I've traveled to Houston for business and it is not my cup of tea, but I love living in Austin, Dallas also has some very nice areas too. And the drawl comes natural after a couple years, you just can't help yourself! What type of work are you interested in doing? That may guide where you want to live. Same is true with what you like to do in free time - Austin is huge for biking, live music, boating, etc.

Really you will ove it here , Houston not so fond of but you can live there and be happy You will be much happier in Dallas though cause there are a ton of Dis'ers here

If you want water, you might consider the Austin area. Austin is very trendy. Set on the edge of the hill country, Lake Travis nearby. Big city, but not overwhelming like Houston & Dallas/Ft Worth. San Antonio is about 1 1/2 hours south.

We moved from northeast, goodbye bagels and the ocean to the dallas/fort worth area. We now live back in the northeast, but we plan to retire in texas one day and go every year to visit our old friends and to watch the yankees verse the rangers in arlington. Houston is hot and muggy. You can always take a trip to padre island, galveston etc. Its not the ocean, but there are lots of lakes in north dallas, like lake texoma, white rock lake, joe pool lake etc. The people in dallas are so nice, even if they always called us the yankees and northerners. The reason we moved there was financial and we definetely had a better life there. Maybe Kirk can give you some inside info, I think he is from Houston. Good luck. We sure did not miss the snow.

I grew up in Austin. I don't know a single person who has lived in Austin and not loved it. I moved to Houston five years ago and can say that I like it much more than I expected to like it. Do you want to live in the city or the suburbs?

Texas is a great place for the law abiding to live. We have been in Austin for close to six years and it has really grown on us. Great people, lots to do, resonable cost of living (unless you already live somewhere else in Texas, Austin is pretty expensive by Texas standards). Good schools. Huston is not my cup of tea. Too wet. Too industrial. Too big (in the wrong way). Dallas is another great city. However young with no kids is a great time to try things out. We moved 8 times in as many years when we first were married. We got to live in some really great places. Now that the kids are school aged we fell like we need to stay put awhile.

Gosh I had no idea so many people didnt like our little city. I grew up in Pearland and now live in Friendswood--both suburb's of Houston. It is hot and humid here--pretty much like Orlando.
If you want to be close to the water and in one of the more upscale places you might want to check out the Clear Lake area--very nice. If you like you can pm with any questions you have.

I live in Houston, and my husband and I hate it! VERY hot and humid. If we could we'd move to Austin or Dallas area. Austin is just beautiful and LOTS to do! I don't consider Galveston the ocean, i know it is but sooo ugly!!!

I would really like to live near the ocean again, but I also want to live somewhere nicer too. Some of the apartments in Clear Lake seem a little pricey but not too bad for being close to the water.

Where is Austin would be good? North, South, East, West...??

I would rather be in a suburb than the city. We aren't city people... we would like culture and outdoor stuff to do. Something more than Indianapolis offers... which in my opinion isn't much!!

How far is Austin from the coast? I have heard great things about Austin away from here as well.....

On a side note, my cat's name is Dallas. I never thought I might live there!

I live just east of Dallas. There are a lot of things to do here depending on what you are interested in. I took out my map and quickly counted 13 lakes within two hours of Dallas.

I've driven through Houston a couple of times and it's too big, hot and humid for me. I used to work with a girl that grew up in Houston and she always complained about how Dallas was so unsophisticated and wanted to be back home. She ended up moving back to Houston after a couple of years.

I will tell you this. Expect to drive a lot no matter where you live here.

Galveston and Corpus Christi are both a little over 200 miles from Austin. But the beaches in CC are a little better, at least that's what I remember.

The area up around Austin is nice, wouldn't mind living north of it myself, out in the hill country.

Just want to be sure you understand that MOST of the Gulf Coast in the Houston area is very industrial- lots of barges and oil rigs and things like that. Not a picturesque rocky coastline like in New England, and no soft, white sand beaches like in Florida.

But Texas does have lots of beautiful, clear lakes!
