Terrible treatment by bus driver (re. stroller).

We just returned from a wonderful trip, but had such a terrible experience yesterday with a bus driver on our last evening. My MIL and I took the kids (ages 3 and 1) to the parks all week while DH was attending a conference at the Grosvenor in the DTD village area (this hotel wasn't bad at all, contrary to the reviews I read...we stayed in a tower room).

As many of you know, it can be a logistical nightmare getting on and off the buses with a double stroller, two young kids, a diaper bag, jackets for the cool evenings, and any other necessities brought along. All of the drivers had been very courteous, patient and helpful as one of us held on to the two kids and bags while the other folded up the stroller (a side-by-side umbrella-type stroller) and placed it in the luggage compartment under the bus. Some drivers even folded the stroller for us, which we did not expect, but nonetheless appreciated.

Last night both of my children fell asleep as we were leaving the Magic Kingdom. MIL held one child and a bag of gifts she had purchased, I held the other child and the diaper bag, and we both struggled to fold the stroller up with one hand each. MIL asked the bus driver, who stood there watching us struggle the whole time, if he would open the under-bus compartment so we could store the stroller. He told us that space was reserved for wheelchairs. I politely explained that every other driver had told us to put the stroller there, and that there were no people with wheelchairs boarding the bus anyway. He snapped back at me, "well every other driver didn't know the rule...only wheelchairs go under here."

A very nice gentleman who was boarding the bus took the stroller from my MIL and helped her get on the bus ahead of him. When I tried to get on immediately following my MIL, the bus driver told me, "there's a line...you have to go to the back of the line." So I did. Now I was the last one in line, and the driver got on the bus himself. When I got up to the door, he closed the doors on me and put the bus in gear!

I pounded on the door until he opened it up. I told him that my son was on that bus with my MIL and my stroller, and that he had to let me on this bus! He snapped back, "you shouldn't have waited until I closed the door to tell me that!" Huh????? So he let me on, but told me I would have to get off and wait for the next bus unless I could find a seat because it was completely full. The nice man who helped with the stroller gave me HIS seat, and he stood up in the aisle the entire ride back, one had on the bar and one hand holding up my stroller!

I told my MIL as I sat down that we had become separated because the driver told me I had to go to the back of the line. The driver heard me say this (we were in the 2nd row of seats) and said over the microphone, "lady, I didn't tell you that...you chose to go to the back of the line yourself." I told him that it was rude to pick a fight with me over the microphone, and that if he had something to say to me he should do so privately. He said (again over the microphone), "I'm not rude...you're telling lies." I told him that I assumed he didn't work for Disney since he didn't have that Disney spirt, and I decided to leave it at that since there were families on the bus trying to savor their last moments of Disney. But he shot back, "I would never work for Disney. They couldn't pay me enough," and went on to say some negative things about the Disney corporation that I couldn't hear well.

Then he made some disparaging remarks (not over the microphone) about "people coming on buses with big strollers." He then started doing Disney character impersonations to make everyone think he was just loads of fun, and then he told a very off-color joke (not vulgar, just gross bathroom humor that I don't appreciate hearing on a bus leaving DISNEY WORLD, for goodness sakes!).

I reported this moron to the manager on duty at the hotel. It turns out the DTD hotels now contract with some outside company to run the buses, and he said they have had several complaints. I'm about to write a letter explaining all of this, which he told me to do.

I just needed to vent about this because I'm still fuming. This man tried to leave me in the dark Disney parking lot with my 3 yo son because he was irritated with me for asking him to open the luggage comparment to store my stroller! And then he tried to humiliate me over the microphone in front of a full busload of people! I just couldn't believe this was happening to me on a Disney vacation! Has anyone else had such a bizarre experience with Disney contracted workers?

Yikes...make sure you write that letter...
That's a terrible experience! What a jerk. :(

I wouldn't consider him a Disney contracted bus driver - Grosvenor is not owned by Disney, is it? Aren't they are just part of a large group of hotels Disney has given certain priveleges (sp?) to? I would complain to Grosvenor upper management, and to the bus company, if you can get that info.

Someone, please correct me if I am wrong, but this has nothing to do with WDW, does it? It's a Grosvenor issue?

OMG, I don't know what I would have done in your situation. I'm so sorry that happened to you. Thank God for that man that helped you out, a true gentleman. Sounds like the bus driver wa scum~I wouldn't let that issue go until that man is fired. I assume you got his name~what a creep.

Schmeck is right. The DTD hotels have their own transportation service, so you'll need to complain to your hotel about your experience. The driver wasn't contracted by Disney, but by your hotel.

Last August I stayed at the QS and was taking there shuttle (which is contracted also) to universal. The bus shows up 45 minutes late and above all things the driver is high on Heroin. ( I know it was herion b/c unfortunetly my kids father fell into bad company and this became his drug of choice. Anyway, I noticed right after we all boarded the bus and I told him to wait and ran inside the hotel to make them aware of the situation. Well they had me speak to someone from the co. itself and this lady told me this guy was fine. I asked her if there was anyone there who can take a quick drive over there and look at him for themselves rather then risking a bus load of people life. She said no and once again told me he was fine. I get on the bus and make my family put all the kids on the inside of the seats and the adults on the aisle side. That trip was so scary that kids were on the bus crying and praying. He was nodding off and going into other lanes, running lights, and we almost went into a ditch while going around an off ramp. He total nodded and fell asleep at a light and it had turned green and back to red before we screamed at him that we could see him in the mirror (he then turned it up facing the ceiling so he couldn't see him anymore). We get to universal and after a brief conversation with my sister (that required more then her mouth unfortunetly). We were told we couldn't use there bus not because of the incident alone but that we set him up to do that and then someone stole the radio out of the bus while he left it unattended to follow my sister. They paid no mind to the desk person, who told them I reported this before the bus even left the parking lot. They paid no mind to the numerous complaints they got from people calling on their cell phones while on the bus. They were trying to cover the drivers behind. That same evening he came back to US, driving with his supervisor and smerked as his bus load pulled off. I spoke to the supervisor (who told me he wasn't the supervisor, park security told me he was as he pulled off)he told me he was from some hotel making sure his guest got back. After taking a cab, I call and find out we are not allowed to use there service anymore.

Go figure? We did nothing but watch our lives pass before our eyes.
That is the worst service I have had on vacation. I would have flip out in your situation though.

Sorry this happened to you but this was in no way Disney's fault. DTD hotels are not Disney run and they contract outside companies to provide transportation to the parks. Your complaint should go to the hotel and the company it contracted with only.
Unfortunately one of the disadvantages of staying at a non-Disney owned hotel.

OMG! I can't beleive your awful experience- I am so sorry for you! I hop you got the jerk's name.

IMO you should write to WDW because the hotel is "an official WDW hotel"- that makes them resposible. You should also write to Grovesnor and the bus company andmaybe even the BBB.

The driver's behavior was beyond inexcuseable! If he did it to you, he's done it before and will do it again.

Let us know what happens!:sunny:

Correct...I understand that the bus driver was contracted by the hotels (this bus company services all of the DTD hotels), and I mentioned that in my post. I am not in any way blaming Disney for this. I am also not blaming the hotel for this, but I did not know who else to file my complaint with because I didn't know the name of the bus company (their buses just say "Disney World transportation" on them). The hotel manager told me I was correct in coming to him.

When you do business with any company that is allowed to be called an "official Disney World" [whatever the business is], then you expect a certain quality of service and treatment, even if that company is not OWNED by Disney. They are part of your Disney experience while you are there, and you shouldn't have to pay extra to stay at an actual Disney-owned hotel just to get courteous treatment.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out after I write my letter.

My only question is "Why would you get on the bus?" If there was ever a doubt in my mind that the driver wasn't competent, I would never risk my life or my family's lives.

I was wondering the exact same thing.

Me too! What a scary experience.

To the OP, thank you for sharing your story. Please pursue this issue as far as you can--people with that kind of attitude certainly should not be driving "official Disney hotel" buses (or, really, dealing with the public in any way!), even if they're not actually Disney employees.

I realize that it takes a lot of patience to deal with crowds all day long, especially with families with small kids and big strollers, but there are people who do have that kind of patience and THEY are the ones who should be driving the buses. On our last trip, all the WDW bus drivers were extremely courteous and patient with us as we struggled on and off the buses with kids, double stroller, diaper bag, etc. and I truly appreciated that.

:)

Why not give this driver the benefit of assuming that he was having a bad day? Every situation has two sides to it and it appears that this was customer service without the service. Disney has no responsibility in this and I'm not sure why someone would contact the BBB to complain about a complementary service. We have had great drivers, okay drivers and bad ones, all of them being Disney CMs. We have experienced good and bad drivers on the DTD busses as well. The resort that you stayed at has a less than stellar customer service record and has a hard enough time trying to correct its own mistakes, let alone trying to correct the contracted bus service employees. Our worst WDW bus experience was when DTD was the Village Marketplace. We had eaten breakfast on the Empress Lilly and were waiting for a bus to take us to the MK. After 2 hours of stopping security, speaking to Guest Services and trying to board any bus arriving(all very full), security finally realized that no one was assigned to drive between DTD and the MK. There were 5+ busloads of people waiting at this point. And the best part, people pushing to get on the first bus instead of waiting fair turns. Perhaps your driver was having a bad day.

Pardon my french but that guy was such an *******, i would complain to everyone, call the corporate company and everyone else, believe me when you voice your complaints it does make a difference, i had first hand knowledge of that. Sorry it happened to you

I Think about it now but at the time we had our trip planned down to the day and had already used a rest day on our first park day b/c the bus was over an hour late. this day we weren't going to do that again, so we got on with the idea that if he does this everyday maybe he can be a functional person still. Well I was wrong and would never put my family in harms way again.:(
